00:11What was the number plate?
00:13I can't believe I'm saying this over air, but the number plate was...
00:16Tasty. Bravo, Juliet.

02:46SIREN WAILS
02:48We've got one male's case outside Harbour Hotel on the seafront.
02:52He's been biting doorstep and attacking punters on the street.
02:56OK. I'm going to try to sustain him.
02:58I'm the big...
03:00He's biting, he's biting me.
03:02Don't bite me.
03:04He's just...
03:06HE SCREAMS
03:08I mean, can we just let him go? No.
03:10He's bit me, bro.
03:12He's bit two people! Trust me, he can't be let go!
03:15Run! Be careful!
03:17He's grabbing my nuts, he's grabbing my nuts!
03:19He's bit your nuts!
03:21He's bit his own nuts!
03:23He's bit another one!
03:25This is the worst he's been, he's...
03:27HE SCREAMS
03:30SIREN WAILS
03:32We're heading down now. To the Harbour Hotel?
03:34Yeah, bitey, man.
03:36SIREN WAILS
03:39Biting's really nasty.
03:41I've been bitten badly.
03:43I mean, I've still got the guy's teeth marks on my arms.
03:46I'll be seven years in the job next year.
03:49I've had lots of punches and roll-arounds,
03:51but, yeah, something about biting,
03:53it's really sort of animalistic and just really dirty.
03:56HE SCREAMS
03:59He's lying in spit, yeah.
04:01We've got legs.
04:03Right now.
04:05We're in the wrong place. No, we're not.
04:07Are you...real?
04:10Move away, move away.
04:12No!
04:14You can walk...
04:17I don't want you standing and filming all that.
04:19Just move back.
04:21Why the...is this happening?
04:23I tell you what, cos he's bitten someone.
04:25So move back, yeah?
04:30When everything's kicking off around you,
04:32it's really important that you stay calm.
04:34Don't worry, it's all over social media.
04:36Just move back a bit, mate.
04:38You can film, just move back a bit, right?
04:40It's just a case of just reminding yourself,
04:42John, just don't do anything stupid.
04:44Right, we haven't got a van.
04:46It's not biting anyone.
04:48You don't want it to escalate,
04:50you want to deal with one situation,
04:52and let's all get out of here.
04:54Move back a bit, now.
04:56You're not allowed.
04:58Yeah, I can. Yeah, I can, actually.
05:00You can, now move.
05:02No, you cannot touch me.
05:04But it can then get worse,
05:06and then it's like,
05:08here we go, this is it.
05:10I'm not...
05:12I'm not...
05:14I'm not...
05:16I'm not...
05:18Don't pinch me!
05:20Get down. Get down.
05:22Get down.
05:24There's a man going round taking names.
05:27Put your hands behind your back, now.
05:29And he decides...
05:31Right, you're under arrest,
05:33assault the police officer.
05:35Everybody will be treated all the same.
05:37These two need to just get up.
05:39We'll move away, then just get rid of them.
05:41Right, come over here.
05:43Stop talking.
05:45When the man comes around...
05:49I think a show of force is very effective.
05:52I've seen loads of people
05:55being really hostile to crying like a baby.
05:58I don't like being touched and grabbed and pinched.
06:01So if I see you again, you'll be coming in.
06:03Is that really clear?
06:05Yeah.
06:07It's that sudden change of dynamic.
06:09They realise, you know,
06:11I've been dealt with by the police here.
06:13They will definitely go home.
06:15Very sheepish after that than before.
06:21It is a physical job.
06:23It was great. I quite enjoyed it.
06:25Every day, you're getting hands-on.
06:27Every day, you're being pushed, or you're pushing back.
06:32That's how I like it.
06:34Straight in.
06:36And that's truthful.
06:38That was mental.
06:40I've smashed heads with loads of people.
06:42I don't know who they were.
06:44I don't mean like mental.
06:46I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
06:50Whoever is unjust...
06:52Alcohol and the effects is...
06:54It's just unpredictable.
06:56Right, we're going to help you up and walk, mate, OK?
06:59They're just crazy. They're absolutely crazy.
07:02So my first question is, have you consumed any alcohol today?
07:07I was invited to a brunch bottomless.
07:10And in six people, we had four bottles of Prosecco.
07:14OK. Do you have a writing or reading difficulty?
07:17I'm really good at writing.
07:19Good. Do you suffer from any mental health issues?
07:21I do not. OK, good.
07:23But I might be from today onwards.
07:25Well, I hope not.
07:29An obese guy.
07:31So dangerous.
07:33Don't you fucking kiss me!
07:35Really? Do not fucking...
07:37You're further arrested for assault police.
07:41People lose who they are and their mind.
07:44It can be disturbing, it can be comical.
07:47Please don't touch my dick.
07:49This job is absolutely insane.
07:53Spitting and biting?
07:55No.
07:56I'd rather just be punched in the face, 100%.
07:59I think biting and spitting is one of the worst things anyone can do.
08:04Oh, yeah. I'm like, are you a camel?
08:07If not, keep that saliva in your gob.
08:10Do you get a lot of biters?
08:12More so than you'd think in a human species.
08:22I'm not feeling the vibe in town today.
08:25No, it feels aggy, doesn't it? Yeah.
08:28I'm feeling... On edge. On edge.
08:32What's next? Could be anything.
08:35Spin the wheel of mayhem.
08:41PHONE RINGS
08:43Sussex Police Emergency.
08:45Hi, I'm security on the Byron Palace here.
08:48There's a guy outside, he's got something hanging like a chain or something.
08:51Can you see what it is? It looks like a weapon.
08:54It looks like something maybe handmade.
08:56A guy's just come over now.
08:58Oh, my God. Oh, my God, he's just chased this guy.
09:01Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. OK, quick.
09:07A night shift, at times it's intense.
09:10There's a lot of weirdos about
09:12and people get weird kicks off doing weird things.
09:15There's a male at the pier, apparently with a long chain and a balls.
09:19Possibly something in a sock as well.
09:22He's here somewhere.
09:27There's so many dangerous people out there.
09:30I think you've got to be careful.
09:34No-one here.
09:36He was at the Fruit Hut.
09:40You have to prepare yourself for what you're going to do
09:43when you get out of the car.
09:45This is the Fruit Hut.
09:47And they're never a nice one to deal with, especially violent ones.
09:51124, we're at the Fruit Hut and can't see anything at present.
09:57Someone's talking.
09:59Round here.
10:02Hello, mate. Hello.
10:04Can you put that down for me, bud?
10:07As a police officer, when you come across a dangerous suspect...
10:10Just put that down for me, mate.
10:12124, behind the Fruit Hut with the male.
10:15..quite often they will be quite hostile towards police.
10:18Can you put that down? It's in your hand, please.
10:21And you just need to expect the unexpected,
10:23cos anything could happen now.
10:25Put it down, mate. Put it down now.
10:27He has a green sock with something inside it.
10:29Mate, put it down.
10:34Stop!
10:37Run out towards the Odeon.
10:41I think we all like a bit of the action sometimes.
10:44Mate, stop!
10:46But I don't really deal with that, running in and arresting people.
10:51Blue jacket, he's got a sock, he's got a thing.
10:55No, no, no! Get it!
10:58On your front, on your front, now!
11:01124, 110.
11:03No officer injuries.
11:06All right, ready? Three, two, one.
11:08There we go.
11:10Just need to search. Do you have anything on you
11:12that you shouldn't have at all?
11:14Anything sharp, anything that might hurt me in any way?
11:17No.
11:19I mean, all sorts turn up.
11:21Do you know what it is?
11:24Anything goes nowadays.
11:26It's like a marble egg, I think.
11:28But hard, like really hard.
11:30It's like a pool ball, but not that shape.
11:32So I think it's probably a marble egg.
11:34Oh, God, they are upright.
11:43Have you taken anything tonight, mate?
11:45No.
11:47Here's the justice.
11:49Here's Brighton.
11:51Congratulations.
11:52You are so right.
11:56I think at times you don't have a clear picture
11:59of exactly what has happened.
12:01People can feel a little bit weird.
12:05It's very easy to read something, make a judgement,
12:08but you don't always know what you're dealing with.
12:11It's hard to work out sometimes.
12:14God, I'm gasping after that.
12:16Fucking hell, you can run. Yeah.
12:18I can run. We both.
12:20Oh, shit. I'm too old for that.
12:22He had long legs and on the flat.
12:25He was not stopping.
12:27The trick is you don't have to be as fast as them.
12:30You just have to keep eyes on.
12:32Yeah. They'll run out of steam.
12:34Fish bash bosh.
12:36One in the bin.
12:38One marble egg in a sock secured.
12:51Like, you know when you go to some jobs
12:54and there's no, like, witnesses or CCTV, but there's a dog?
12:58And I just... I just think,
13:01you have all the answers,
13:03but you can't tell me.
13:06Stop.
13:08Tell me everything.
13:10Yeah, but, like... Where are the drugs?
13:12Do you not ever think that?
13:14No.
13:16I always think that.
13:18I always think that.
13:20Do you need help?
13:26I love a Friday and Saturday night shift.
13:29I love talking to drunk people.
13:31Do you know how to work it?
13:33And I love it when stag dudes and hen dudes come up to you
13:36asking for a picture cos it's on their tick list or whatever.
13:39The most beautiful police...
13:42Ah, that's nice.
13:45The most beautiful police officer.
13:47Don't worry, lads, I'm standing right here.
13:49See ya!
13:53Growing up in Brighton, I always kind of knew
13:56that policing the area that you live,
13:59you'd see a different side to it,
14:01so I wouldn't say it surprised me.
14:03It more opened my eyes.
14:05Oh, we got the hens out.
14:08Before I became a police officer,
14:10I used to work in the prison service.
14:12That role was a culture shock.
14:14Because you imagine every single prisoner to be violent,
14:17hating everyone, but actually,
14:19some would come across as everyday, sort of normal people,
14:23and you'd never guess what they'd done.
14:26I think my previous role has helped me expect the unexpected.
14:31PHONE RINGS
14:32Sussex Police, what's the emergency?
14:34I've just been doing a walk-around in the block of flats
14:37and I think there's a resident being held hostage in one of the rooms.
14:40He may be being assaulted and I think he's being robbed.
14:43I'm not sure how many people are in there,
14:45but there's somebody who's trying to get out.
14:47SIREN BLARES
14:49Show me your hands, all of you, now.
14:51Show me your hands now. Show me your hands, all of you.
14:53What?!
14:54At this stage, you're under arrest for robbery.
14:57We do come across quite a few robberies.
15:00OK, well, they're loose enough, but when we get to custody,
15:03we're taking them off.
15:05Usually, robbers are youngish men.
15:09Right, put yourself in the box.
15:12Every now and again, you're a bit like,
15:14oh, not sure you should be here.
15:18I can't believe this. I'm a 60-year-old woman.
15:22It's not often you arrest a granny.
15:25So, she's with us for a robbery
15:28and the victim was punched eight times to the face.
15:31One of the two females has grabbed a screwdriver
15:34and threatened to stab the victim,
15:36whilst the other has emptied the victim's pocket.
15:39Right, I know from your reaction you don't agree with that.
15:42My colleague there to your left is going to search you, OK?
15:47I don't mind searching people.
15:49I see it as like a game of hide and seek.
15:52Stand by. There's more money.
15:54There's more?
15:56£260, £270.
15:58How much do you think is in your leg?
16:00£300.
16:01You've got £300 up your leg?
16:03Of my trousers, yeah.
16:04How did you even get it up there?
16:06All right, that's all right.
16:08Don't worry.
16:12Have you got stuff hidden within your clothing?
16:14I'm going to find a strip search.
16:17Right, can you start with taking your top half off?
16:20Do you want me? Let's have a look.
16:22Ooh!
16:24People are creative.
16:25Wait, wait, wait, don't do the bottom half yet.
16:27The weirdest thing people hide is razor blades in their face.
16:32The weirdest thing people hide is razor blades in their foreskin.
16:37I used to know a female that shoplifted all the time
16:40and she'd hide it up her vagina.
16:43And then I found, like, whole foundations and everything in there.
16:46It's rank.
16:50What a thrill a minute.
16:52Have you got anything in there?
16:54We'll find it.
16:58Woo!
17:00Right, what are the odds? What are the odds?
17:04Shall we cross?
17:06I'm definitely crossing. I'm literally crossing.
17:12I'm crossing.
17:14Policing has turned into mother care.
17:17Being older, walking around West Street,
17:20everyone just looks really young.
17:24There are plenty of idiots rocking around.
17:29I'll tell you what, people are really drunk already.
17:31There's a lot of drunk people around already, mate.
17:33A lot of people.
17:34West Street is rammed.
17:36Sorry, I didn't realise.
17:38Shall we go away, mate?
17:42It's alcohol, isn't it?
17:44People lose their mind.
17:46You'd fill every cell up with West Street alone.
17:49You black shite!
17:51West Street, West Street!
17:53You black shite!
17:54Police, what's your emergency?
17:56Yeah, I've got a cell detained on the floor.
17:58He's attacking the British outside,
18:00saying blackface, blackface that.
18:02Yeah, 150's en route now.
18:05Oh! Oh!
18:07See, you black shite!
18:09I will get you for black shite!
18:12I will get you for...
18:14Stop, stop being racially abusive.
18:16Stop it.
18:17So we got flagged by a taxi.
18:19He kept trying to get in, the taxi driver said no.
18:21OK.
18:22And he kept trying to get into every cab after that.
18:24Yeah.
18:25Actually physically tearing open the doors
18:27and then having to be removed. Yeah.
18:29And then he went to jump into the cab
18:31and he was going to go for the females in the car
18:33cos they were giving him the finger. Yeah.
18:35OK.
18:36I'm shite. Stop it, mate.
18:39No, that's not happening.
18:41Traveller, I will pass!
18:43It takes its toll dealing with pissed people
18:46because the level of abuse goes up.
18:49Four kids is handicapped size.
18:51One, two, three.
18:54You get the physical confrontation
18:56but then throw in the verbal stuff, it can be really tough.
19:12Your mind is saying,
19:14oh, that bloke just said what to me?
19:26Shut up.
19:32You've got to be professional.
19:34But it is really difficult.
19:36We're not robots.
19:45They stand there and look like it's not affecting you.
19:48It is affecting you.
19:57Hit me!
19:59Hit me!
20:05I've definitely changed as a police officer.
20:08Dealing with difficult situations has matured me in several ways,
20:11I think.
20:12I'll let you have it. Who's search?
20:14There are many hands.
20:16It's only the way with those ones.
20:19Enjoy.
20:20When I was younger, I didn't have much confidence.
20:24I had issues at home out of my control.
20:27I was just left to fend for myself.
20:31I left school with one GCSE,
20:34never thought I'd be a police officer.
20:37And I remember thinking, could I actually do it?
20:40Not having any credentials or even an ounce of self-belief.
20:45But just with a slight change of mindset,
20:48obviously made it through and did it.
20:50Two hours to go.
20:53Come on.
20:54Everyone stay nice, calm, peaceful.
20:57And we'll all get through this together.
21:02A successful night shift to me.
21:05Are you all right?
21:06Everyone's had their fun.
21:08They've all had a little drink,
21:10they've had a little chat,
21:12they've had a little chat,
21:14they've had a little chat,
21:16they've had a little chat,
21:18they've all had a little drink,
21:19they've had a little dance,
21:21and they've all managed to get home safely.
21:24And off he goes, released into the wild.
21:31As a police officer, a big aspect is the safety of the public.
21:36I would never want to see vulnerable people get hurt.
21:40We've got a high-risk missing person.
21:43She has stated that she was coming down to Brighton
21:47to go to the cliffs and commit suicide.
21:52Charlie, Romeo 182, over.
21:54I believe she was at the top of the cliff.
21:56If we get eyes on,
21:58I'm not sure if we can see the Coast Guard to assist.
22:01That's all received, thank you.
22:03It's always a worry when a missing person is known to be suicidal.
22:08A commissioner's called and said
22:10that she has stated that she's arrived at her destination,
22:14but hasn't stated where it is.
22:22I just want to get a missing person as quick as I can
22:25so I can do the best job I can.
22:27I don't want to get hurt.
22:29I just want to get a missing person as quick as I can
22:32so I can do the best job for them.
22:34Try and talk them down from wherever they are
22:36and make sure they're safe.
22:39We need to find them as quickly as possible.
22:43Nothing. No?
22:45No. I can see all the way down.
22:53Is there someone up there?
22:56I think so. I think there might be someone up there.
22:59She's got to be at the top.
23:05And it runs through your head,
23:07what you're going to say and how you're going to react
23:10once you find them.
23:15Where are you?
23:18Are you coming to speak to me? My name's Leanne.
23:21Just a bit concerned for you.
23:26Charlie Romeo 108, I've got eyes on the female.
23:29She is on the cliff edge shouting for me not to come over.
23:33Can I get a few more units here?
23:37You never plan for that situation
23:39and no amount of training will ever prepare you
23:41for being at the top of a high building or cliff.
23:45Can you... Do you want to step...
23:47Do you want to step away from me?
23:49Do you want to step away from the edge
23:51and we'll have a chat and a vape together?
23:54Look, focus on me. Focus on what I'm saying.
23:57I'm Leanne. I'm a female officer.
24:00I'm very nice.
24:02It's important to stay calm,
24:04because if you're stressing about it or frantic,
24:07it doesn't help the situation.
24:09Yeah? Come back through here and we'll have a chat about it.
24:14In that moment, you say what comes to mind
24:17and the best thing is just to keep them talking
24:20and encourage them to come away from that high place.
24:23Look, come towards me. It's only me talking to you.
24:27Come over here. I'll roll you another fag if you want.
24:31Listen, take my hand.
24:33I just want to get you some help.
24:39All right, if we walk up, I think there's a car somewhere.
24:42I had to walk quite a while to find you.
24:45I've definitely got my step-count in tonight, then.
24:49It's always a nice feeling when that person gets off the edge,
24:53even if their mental health continues to be a struggle for them.
24:57I've saved them in that one moment.
25:00It's a massive sense of relief.
25:04So, I'm with a female.
25:06She was located on the cliff tops, very close to the edge.
25:09I've just managed to talk her away from it.
25:12Is there any places of safety available?
25:15She said that she'll just come straight back to the cliff top
25:18and kill herself.
25:20OK, so no place of safety will accept her.
25:24OK.
25:28Oh, for God's sake.
25:31The mental health system is in crisis
25:33and there's not a lot of help to go around.
25:36And until you build dedicated, large-scale hospitals
25:41with mental health A&Es, it's not going to change.
25:47Chances are, I'm about to section her.
25:51The police are limited in what they can do,
25:54but we can 136 people so that we keep an eye on that person
25:58for 24 hours until they're assessed.
26:01I've spoken to everyone available
26:05and I don't want to have to detain you.
26:09But at present, it is 0125
26:13and I have to detain you under the mental health fact.
26:16So, you're stuck with us.
26:18All right?
26:20Have you got your seatbelt on?
26:26I don't think anyone would have thought
26:28I don't think anyone will ever get comfortable
26:31with someone at height threatening to commit suicide.
26:36It's not until after you're out of that situation,
26:39that person's safe, then you get time to sort of breathe and think,
26:43what did I just do?
26:45MUSIC FADES
26:54CHEERING
26:59Who are you trying to get to, mate?
27:01Sorry, I don't know. What's your first language?
27:04Paris. Ah, you're French? Yeah.
27:06Je m'appelle Philippe, et toi?
27:08Je m'appelle Tom. That's all I know.
27:10Olive. Au revoir. Au revoir.
27:12Au revoir. Au revoir.
27:14Thank you. Good. Good.
27:16That shows I can speak a little bit of French. That does.
27:21Je m'appelle Philippe. Je m'appelle Philippe.
27:23Très bien. Merci.
27:25Je m'appelle Philippe. Paris in France, innit?
27:28Across the pond, innit?
27:32People like banter and a bit of humour.
27:34Someone nicked me.
27:36What am I doing?
27:38This sounds really arrogant, doesn't it?
27:40You either have it or you haven't got it.
27:42I look happy there, look. How happy do I look?
27:45I wasn't born to be a police officer.
27:47Before I was a copper, I was rocking out in a band.
27:53I was the lead guitarist and songwriter.
27:56We did really well, I think, for a local thing.
27:59We were on Meridian Tonight News, actually.
28:02Fred Dainage, he mentioned our band.
28:05Ah, big names.
28:07CHEERING
28:09You've obviously got to be really tight as a band.
28:11But we just fell out.
28:13We're working. Thank you. Cheers.
28:16The singer and I were getting a little bit tetchy.
28:18I was getting fed up with it.
28:20Over time, I thought, is there something better out there?
28:23So I applied for the police, got in.
28:26Now I'm the police and I'm, you know, enjoying life.
28:31I think it's really important, this job.
28:33With the police, you're going to incidents
28:35that actually are extremely serious.
28:38PHONE RINGS
28:40Sussex Police, what's the emergency?
28:42I'm calling about an incident I just witnessed on Pike Road.
28:45There was a white man hauled up and the guy got out
28:48and proceeded to pull a female out of the car
28:52and he threw her to the floor.
28:54She didn't appear to have any underwear on or bottom half on.
28:58Nothing at all? Yeah, but it looked to be quite violent.
29:03POLICE RADIO CHATTER
29:17A member of the public has seen a van dump a woman out of it.
29:21She's got nothing on her lower half,
29:23so we're quite concerned at the moment.
29:27We are literally hunting people every single day.
29:31That vehicle has just hit the... camera.
29:34Adrian, have I got a unit that's going to head towards that location?
29:37107, we are.
29:39You're just trying to get as much information as you can do.
29:42It can be frustrating, but at the same time,
29:45I enjoy the challenge of trying to find that person.
29:56Why is it when you're looking for a certain vehicle you see loads of them?
29:59It's like a van centre around here, isn't it? Yeah, it is.
30:06The female's been located, so we've got officers with her now,
30:09speaking with her.
30:11They'll make sure she's OK medically and she's not injured at all.
30:15But ultimately, now that she's been located,
30:17we need to get the suspect, get him nicked and get him to custody.
30:21But at the moment, it's quite tricky to find out where he could be.
30:24Bit of a needle in a haystack, then?
30:27At the moment, it is, yeah.
30:33I've been known to hunt for hours.
30:36I'm like a dog with a bone. I'm like, where has he gone?
30:38They can't have got away.
30:40I'm having a look through Niche to see if I can find anything.
30:44I've just realised he lives on a boat.
30:48We've got to get him. We can't lose him.
30:50That boat is not at that marina.
30:54Quite stubborn, that way.
30:58It doesn't even bloody work. It's a good bit, isn't it?
31:02Right, well, we're not getting in there, then, are we?
31:05No. I'm trying to see if we can find him.
31:10I mean, there's a lower fence there.
31:12I don't want to climb this fence, cos I don't know what will happen.
31:15You hold that. I'll stack it. You younger than me.
31:18Younger legs. You can go over there.
31:21Nearly. You all right?
31:24You all right?
31:26Yeah, that must be hurt.
31:28It's quite...
31:30Oh! This is mental.
31:33It's dedication, Phil. Dedication.
31:36Safeguarding. Definitely not your privacy.
31:38You're not safeguarding. There you go.
31:40Get your foot on that central wire.
31:42Do you know what? I'm getting too old for this.
31:44There you go. I'm 40. There you go.
31:46Look at that. See?
31:49Get your torch for some of the boat names.
31:52It's not readily apparent, is it?
31:56I've come up to 14 years in the police.
31:59I've learnt over time that you've got to be tenacious.
32:03Perseverance is important.
32:05KNOCK AT DOOR
32:07Hello?
32:09Can you open up, please?
32:11Please. Can you jump out of the boat for us?
32:14Is this your bike?
32:16At this moment in time, I don't think I'm going to be able to do it.
32:20At this moment in time, I'm placing you under arrest, OK?
32:23Yes, what for?
32:25You're under arrest for domestic ABH and domestic common assault, OK?
32:30Have you ever been to custody before?
32:32Of course I have. I'm not speaking like...
32:35Right, my colleague's just going to hold on to you, OK?
32:37We'll go to the car.
32:39How did you get in anyway? How did you get through the gates?
32:42I can't really explain it to you.
32:45We're all one team,
32:47and we all have different skill sets that we bring to the table.
32:50And when you finally get that person and arrest them,
32:53that's a massive adrenaline rush for me. I think that's brilliant.
32:56Fence climbing. Fence climbing.
32:58Phil doesn't have that skill.
33:00That was quite a loose structure for me.
33:02You bit on the fence about going over.
33:04It's horrendous.
33:07Right, lads. Have you, er, stolen a trolley?
33:10It was found outside our bar. Yeah.
33:13Theft by finding. A classic.
33:15Yeah, finders keepers.
33:17He walked straight into that crime, to be fair.
33:19Careful, lads.
33:23I would say I'm quite a fair officer.
33:26After working in a prison,
33:28I prefer seeing people who are honest with themselves.
33:31I don't want to be a criminal.
33:33After working in a prison,
33:35I prefer seeing people out and about
33:37rather than locked behind closed doors.
33:47I don't always need to be the authority figure.
33:50We go to a lot of incidents where a crime hasn't actually been committed,
33:54so I just need to have a conversation with another human being.
34:04No, he's just on the floor by the steps.
34:06Absolutely up his arm. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Thanks, mate.
34:10Brighton's rough sleepers are very well known to the police,
34:13so it's not often a new one arrives and surprises you.
34:17That gentleman over there, he just got out of the nick this morning.
34:20OK. Do you know his name? No.
34:22He's called Adam Lewis, so basically he's never been to Brighton before,
34:25so he's stuck. OK. So he's drank himself into oblivion.
34:28I don't know. OK.
34:33A lot of ex-offenders absolutely hate the police.
34:36Are you all right? It's OK.
34:38So I tend to just sort of have a chat
34:40and build some kind of rapport with them.
34:42What's your name?
34:46Do you know it? No. Do you have any ID on you?
34:49No. Can I have a look?
34:54I've been in prison receptions where people are getting released
34:57and they get released with £40 and you sort of think,
35:00well, what's that person going to do with that?
35:02They're almost forced to be on the street.
35:07Yeah.
35:11No, they're cancelled today, aren't they?
35:14You're looking for a place to stay tonight, right? Is that the plan?
35:19There's a church down the road. We could take you down there.
35:24You can't force people to do something they don't want to do.
35:27Yeah. All right, we'll come back and check on you in a bit, then,
35:30shall we? OK. All right, bud.
35:33But if I can build a good relationship,
35:35at least you're aware they're there,
35:37you know sort of where they're rough sleeping.
35:41You're kind of just acknowledging them, I guess.
35:44All right, bud. Take it easy.
35:49Prison isn't the nicest place on earth,
35:52but if you're cold and outside with no food,
35:55you're better off inside.
35:58In prison, it's warm, you get fed, people talk to you,
36:02so no wonder they come out and then re-offend.
36:06It's just a vicious cycle.
36:21Jon, what's your favourite snack that you like to eat
36:24during a night shift?
36:26I'm only going to say, cos we both like it.
36:28One, two, three. Scotch eggs.
36:30I love a Scotch egg. We both do.
36:32We've had before, we've had a...
36:34Remember that time we had a platter on the...
36:36Is that what those cars are great for?
36:38Platters. Snacks. And a Red Bull.
36:51Midnight up to maybe 2, something like that,
36:53it dies down slightly cos everyone's in where they want to be.
36:57But three to five is just a nightmare.
37:01The clubs, they're all kicking out
37:03and you're dealing with everything that's falling out of the doors.
37:06You know, you've gone from not many people out to now thousands
37:10in a small area.
37:12Any issues in the club, it gets settled outside.
37:16And when you've got young people carrying weapons,
37:19that's when it changes.
37:21That's when it really goes wrong.
37:23Do you have a Charlie 106, just to update on level of injury?
37:50It's 5 or 6, and it's still running.
37:52It's five or six deep lacerations to the head,
37:54going in and out of consciousness.
37:58Not in a very good way.
37:59Stay away from me.
38:01Stay away from me.
38:02Stay away from me.
38:03Stay away from me, yeah?
38:06One of them had a crowbar,
38:07and they're running all over the street,
38:09fighting over here now,
38:10and they've hit the crowbar about four times in the head.
38:15Heard a shout, looks right.
38:17I've seen a guy run to the car,
38:18he's grabbed something that looked like a crowbar,
38:20and then, like, took a big...
38:22I think he was shooting up to that.
38:24Yeah.
38:25And they've driven off at speed.
38:26Do you remember what make of car it was?
38:28Oh, yeah, it was a dark silver grey Mercedes.
38:32When a big incident happens,
38:33your brain's literally just spinning.
38:36There's been some sort of an altercation on Wag Street,
38:39whereby a vehicle, a dark Mercedes,
38:42has then made off southbound towards Seafront.
38:47Every minute that goes past, we're losing evidence.
38:50So we chuck all the resources in
38:51to try and get the suspect located as quickly as we can.
38:54We're on Kingsway, heading eastbound
38:56towards Palace Pier roundabout.
38:58Do you get the description of these?
39:00Subject is a white male,
39:02possibly in possession of a crowbar.
39:05Everyone jumps on board.
39:06There's a lot of adrenaline.
39:07We've got fast-time intel,
39:09we've got fast-time NPR,
39:11vehicle work, subject work, CCTV.
39:13It's game on.
39:15SIREN WAILS
39:17Suspect vehicle.
39:19Suspect being seen to get into that vehicle.
39:21Eyes open.
39:23Silver Merc, I think.
39:26Have we got direction of travel or anything like that?
39:29Let's go down Seafront, shall we?
39:31One on four.
39:32So far, there's no trace of that vehicle.
39:36Ooh.
39:37Oh, that's close.
39:39That is so close.
39:40That would be nice, wouldn't it?
39:42It's a Merc as well.
39:44Update on level of injury.
39:46The paramedics are treating him as life-threatening.
39:49Fuck.
39:51The radio goes non-stop.
39:52People are talking,
39:53have you tried this place, have you tried that place?
39:55Did you hear his home address?
39:57Could he maybe head in that way?
39:58We'll go up there.
40:00Thinking outside the box can help.
40:03You can think of associates that he knows.
40:05Let's go for help.
40:07We'll go to that address, see if he might be there.
40:10And sometimes that can be the case.
40:12Tango, if you're in the position to do an area search, yes, please.
40:16In this job, you've got to be curious.
40:19It may be a long shot, but it can pay off sometimes.
40:25Yo. Hello, mate.
40:29Oi!
40:30Now, now! Get down on the floor!
40:32Get down on the floor now!
40:34Get down!
40:35He's off!
40:36Oi!
40:37Oi!
40:573am, mate, you're coming under arrest for suspicion of ABH.
41:00OK, calm that, black.
41:03We've gone past the RO address of this vehicle so far.
41:07As we've gone past the building,
41:08some males have come out of the building quite quickly.
41:11We have got one male detained, he's got a cut to his left ear,
41:14so he's been in some sort of altercation.
41:20You can arrest someone on suspicion of ABH.
41:23You can arrest someone on suspicion of ABH.
41:26You can arrest someone on suspicion of ABH.
41:28You can arrest someone on suspicion of ABH.
41:30You can arrest someone on suspicion of something,
41:33but you need hard evidence.
41:35He was seen coming immediately from the address out the front door.
41:39Could be 32, the address.
41:41The evidence is everything.
41:43If you haven't got it, it's never going to go anywhere.
41:46Yeah, it's section 32, you're looking for the car keys,
41:48you're looking for a crowbar. Yeah.
41:50It's up to us to find something.
41:52Right, start with this. You want to brace the bottom? Yeah.
41:56Lower it completely down, mate.
41:59You good? Yeah.
42:01Nice.
42:03Police!
42:05That one hit in. Yeah. Very nice.
42:10Going in through a door, brilliant.
42:12I think it's everything that you think it's going to be
42:14when you see it on TV. Police!
42:16It's very loud, dynamic.
42:19You almost forget what's on the other side.
42:22Police! Police!
42:24Police!
42:26It can be really enjoyable.
42:28Clear, clear. Bathroom, clear.
42:31Take a picture of this, Billy.
42:35Oh, this as well, look.
42:37What? It's all ragged, covered in blood.
42:40I've got a Mercedes key.
42:42Mercedes car key.
42:44Ooh, nice. Woo-hoo!
42:46Inside one of the jackets.
42:50So we've got the car key.
42:52I'm just pressing the button just to see if...
42:55..any indicators are flashing.
42:58I'm not going to go far.
43:05Oh!
43:10OK, yes.
43:13HE SIGHS
43:19There is a crowbar on the back seat.
43:23That will be our weapon.
43:29Finding the evidence that you thought might be there is brilliant.
43:33So I just looked through the window and went,
43:35there's that, and I opened the door and was like, oh, there it is.
43:38You can suspect all you want, but when you actually find it,
43:41you think, actually, it's like we knew what we were doing,
43:44like the hunch was right.
43:46I'll say, good job, though.
43:48Doesn't normally happen like this.
43:50There's a vehicle located, crowbar on the back seat,
43:53so just to let you know, yeah.
43:55Being in a band is a very, very different thing to being in the police,
43:59but when the team work together really well,
44:02it's massively satisfying.
44:04I've found my vocation in life, I think, is what it is.
44:07I'll be doing it for a long, long time, hopefully.
44:12Song's come up.
44:14Another day's started.
44:17I did really enjoy working for the prison service,
44:20but you sort of live and breathe policing.
44:23The Lord's work pack.
44:25Done!
44:27It's almost part of your personality
44:29that you never really knew was there.
44:37I keep policing for loads of reasons,
44:40but on reflection,
44:42growing up, the family setting wasn't working,
44:45but as a police officer, the team that you work with
44:48really does become a second family.
44:50That's why I keep going.
44:52That's why.
45:06I can't believe this.
45:08You 60-year-old...
45:16You pack of swines!
45:18I will get you for it!
45:26You caught us with some of the boat notes.
45:28All right, let's have a go ahead.
45:38HE SIGHS
45:48Oh, my days!
45:50Back up a little bit.
45:52I'm probably very drunk.
45:54Yeah, you're absolutely hammered.
45:56He's too drunk to even tell me his name.
45:58How did you interpret gear?
46:00OK.
46:02Somebody somewhere is missing their ten-year-old.
