Taiwan Trains Up Volunteer Emergency Response Teams

Taiwan is prone to natural disasters including earthquakes, landslides, typhoons and flash floods. The T-CERT program launched in 2024 aims to train people to respond immediately to emergency situations before official rescue teams can reach the scene.

00:09follow to stay safe during an earthquake but for these civilians it's about more

00:14than just protecting themselves it's also about staying ready to help save

00:19others they are members of t-shirt Taiwan Community Emergency Response Team

00:25and they play a crucial role when disaster strikes the government launched its t-shirt

00:41program in 2024 with the goal of reducing the damage and harm caused by natural disasters

00:47and to help civilians respond immediately to emergencies given that official rescue teams

00:54usually take three to six hours to reach the scene

00:56anyone can become a member of t-shirt as long as they are willing to learn and help others

01:16no matter your age no matter your sex no matter your belief everybody can join during the emergency

01:24maybe the the elder people they are not able to do something but they can do to be as a logistic

01:31people they can help to maybe to register for the the checklist to see if someone is outside they can

01:40make people can do everything they can do and the rest is all up to three years of professional level

01:46training and continuous practice after getting qualified

01:49they need to learn how to evaluate the scope and the severity of the disaster area and then they need

02:03to learn how to do the very initial and the very basic light rescue so we will give them the very best

02:10technique to save people during the emergency and when we save the people out and get people out they

02:17need to do some medical treatment so they need to learn how to do the very best medical care

02:25Taiwan currently has 190 such teams across the country at least three in each city and county with

02:36the goal of training 80 more each year more can be done to train up the entire population but experts

02:43say the country is on the right track and promoting the importance of emergency response preparation

02:48helping to build a stronger more resilient society able to face what disasters may come
