00:00Welcome to Studies with Stearman. Join us as we look deeper into the Bible.
00:10Strengthen your faith with us, even as we see the day approaching.
00:15And now, here's Gary.
00:17We're going through Acts, and I am stressing in Acts that Acts is the history of the Holy Spirit.
00:25And what we find today, I think, is a grand misunderstanding of the function of the Holy Spirit.
00:33In today's world, pretty much everybody has a conception of God's Holy Spirit,
00:40the Comforter, the Paraclete, the function of the Spirit in our lives.
00:46And yet there is a tendency, when living your life, to experience the problems of life,
00:53and they are many, challenges, disappointments, problems of all sorts,
00:58spiritual conundrums, you name it, that make us doubt the presence of God.
01:06And Satan would love to play on that doubt.
01:10That is, he would love to plant in you the idea that God is somewhere else and he's not listening.
01:17He would love to convince you that it's useless to pray because God is off in another galaxy,
01:24very, very busy with larger problems than yours, and he's not going to hear your prayer.
01:30But in fact, it's much more than hearing prayer.
01:35Christianity, from its inception, was built on fellowship.
01:40It started out with one man, Jesus, who picked out 12 guys and he said,
01:45follow me, and their entire relationship was built on a close interaction.
01:51That is, a sharing of everything in life, including life's problems.
01:56And believe me, Jesus and the disciples had their problems.
02:00They ran into trouble all the time.
02:02And not only did they have external problems, they had internal problems.
02:06That is, they were imperfect men.
02:08Judas being the most imperfect of all, but of course Peter was an imperfect man.
02:13Paul was an imperfect man.
02:14They were all imperfect.
02:16So the church is built on two concepts.
02:21One, the Spirit of God and communion or Christian fellowship.
02:25And two, the utter failure of human beings to do anything appropriately correct.
02:34We're all failures as human beings, I've got to tell you.
02:37I know a lot of people.
02:39I'm right at the top of the list.
02:41People are a collection of internal conflicts with a history and a background of failure.
02:48As Paul said in Romans chapter 7, O wretched man that I am.
02:52And he went on from there.
02:54Basically what he was talking about was this incredible seeming contrast between being sanctified
03:02and being imperfect.
03:04This is what I think you really find in Acts.
03:09When you study the book of Acts, you really come to grips with this idea that man is sanctified.
03:16At the same time, man is imperfect.
03:18And the struggle to reconcile those two elements within human beings really is the root cause of all of the strange gyrations that men have gone through to try to prove themselves religious.
03:33If you look at the history of the Christian religion, there has been every permutation and every odd combination of events and belief systems that you can possibly imagine.
03:45People trying to be godly and failing over and over and over again.
03:52Now in the midst of that, we go back and we look at the book of Acts written by Luke.
03:58And Luke does a marvelous job of showing the workings of the Holy Spirit so that we will not be in doubt about how the Spirit really works.
04:08It's just an inside look at the way God operates through man.
04:13And I should say through imperfect man to get his will accomplished.
04:18Last week, we were going through Acts 19.
04:23And we started in Acts 19 verses 1 through 6 and then just moved right on.
04:30There was the incident of Paul meeting Apollos at the beginning of Acts 19.
04:37And then there's the incident where Paul makes a deal with Tyrannus to operate a school there in Ephesus, which he did for two years.
04:47And then there's the episode of miracles being performed among the Ephesians.
04:54And remember, Ephesus was a very, very important trade and port city on the west coast of Asia Minor during Paul's day.
05:03It was called the Landing Place.
05:05It was a place of incredible trade traffic, a lot of money there, a lot of banking.
05:10The great temple of Diana of the Ephesians was there.
05:15It was a place that lured people from all over the civilized world, whether for money and banking, for agricultural trade, for the worship of Diana,
05:25or for simply the reason of circulating, that is to say, business purposes in general.
05:32So Paul's teaching there, and we come down through verses 21 and 22 of Acts 19, where we read,
05:44After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia to go to Jerusalem,
05:50saying, After I've been there, I must also see Rome.
05:53So he sent him to Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timopheus and Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
06:02And then we came to the episode of the temple of Diana, which we're going to look at today.
06:08But before we do that, several people last week mentioned to me that in studying chapter 19 of Acts,
06:17particularly verses 1 through 7, he said, You just buzzed right across those seven verses,
06:24and you didn't really go into any depth and detail.
06:27And I've been waiting for you to go into depth and detail on those verses.
06:31I said, Well, the reason I skipped over them was because I had a lot of material to cover,
06:37and those are very complex questions that are raised.
06:41And I said, Next week, we'll go back and take another look at Acts 19, 1 through 7.
06:47And let's do that right now, before we talk about the uproar at the temple of Diana of the Ephesians.
06:54It came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper coasts,
07:00came to Ephesus and finding certain disciples, he said unto them,
07:03Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believe?
07:07And they said to him, We haven't so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
07:14Well, that statement right there is a big flag waving in your face.
07:21That book of Acts really is trying to tell you about the function and operation of the Holy Spirit.
07:28Because it's now A.D. 56.
07:31It's 26 or 27 years since the first Pentecost, that is, when the Holy Spirit was given.
07:41And there are men operating here in the same environment as Paul and the others,
07:49who by now have had a chance to plant churches all over Asia Minor.
07:53But we find that there are people operating, you don't even know that there's any such thing as,
08:00quote unquote, the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit.
08:03Verse 3,
08:03And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized?
08:07And they said, Unto John's baptism.
08:10Then, said Paul,
08:15John, verily or truly,
08:18baptized with baptism of repentance,
08:21saying unto the people that they should believe on him,
08:23which come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
08:30Let's go back to Matthew chapter 3
08:32and refresh ourselves on John the Baptist.
08:35Matthew 3, starting in verse 1, says,
08:40In those days came John the Baptist,
08:42preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
08:45saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
08:49What is John doing?
08:51John is an Old Testament prophet.
08:54He's often been called the last of the Old Testament prophets, okay?
08:59And what is he preaching?
09:01He's preaching the gospel of the kingdom of heaven.
09:07And here's the interesting thing.
09:10The gospel of the kingdom of heaven is given to us
09:14by Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel,
09:20Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk.
09:25All of those guys gave the gospel of the kingdom.
09:29And they said that one of these days,
09:32the Messiah is going to come.
09:35Well, here we have the last of the Old Testament prophets
09:39down by the Jordan River.
09:42And he is quoting Isaiah.
09:45Verse 3,
09:47For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah,
09:50saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
09:52Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his path straight.
09:55So John is announcing the coming of Jesus.
09:57Now, all this is not any news to you at all,
10:01but John is preaching the gospel of the kingdom of heaven.
10:08When we, as members of the body of Christ,
10:11go out and preach,
10:13when we share the gospel with people,
10:17we do not preach the gospel of the kingdom of heaven to them
10:21at all.
10:23We preach the gospel of salvation by faith through the grace of God.
10:35It's a totally, totally different gospel
10:37than the gospel of the kingdom.
10:41In fact, Paul called it my gospel.
10:44In several places in his letters,
10:46Paul refers to this as my gospel.
10:51Now, here's the interesting thing.
10:53The Old Testament prophets and John the Baptist
10:55preached the gospel of the kingdom.
10:58The apostles,
11:00after the receiving of the Holy Spirit,
11:03quit preaching the gospel of the kingdom,
11:06and they began to speak and preach the gospel of salvation
11:10by faith through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ
11:14and the shed blood of Christ.
11:15It's a different gospel.
11:18One of these days,
11:20according to what I believe,
11:22the Bible says,
11:23the church will be gone,
11:26will be taken off of the earth.
11:27And there will be raised up
11:31a new group of people.
11:34They will be Jews.
11:36The 144,000 from the 12 tribes
11:38who will be preaching,
11:41guess what?
11:42The gospel of the kingdom.
11:45Once again.
11:47Why?
11:48Because at that time,
11:49after the church is gone,
11:51the next item on God's agenda
11:54is the judgment of this world
11:56followed by the establishment
11:57of the kingdom of David.
11:59And those people,
12:00at that time,
12:02led by the 144,000,
12:04and you can read Revelation 7
12:06to get the details on this,
12:08go out and preach the gospel of the kingdom.
12:12And they will be saying something similar
12:13to what John the Baptist said.
12:15He's coming.
12:16He's going to be here really soon.
12:19And when He does come,
12:21every eye shall see Him.
12:22He's going to appear in the heavens
12:24and people are going to fall down
12:26and weep and wail at His coming
12:28because they failed to recognize Him
12:31at His first coming.
12:33So here's John the Baptist
12:34preaching the gospel of the kingdom.
12:36Verse 4 of Matthew 3,
12:39And the same John
12:40had his raiment of camel's hair,
12:43a leather girdle about his loins,
12:44and his food was locusts and wild honey.
12:48He was an ascetic.
12:49He was actually in the tradition
12:51of the Nazarite.
12:54John was essentially a Nazarite
12:57who had vowed to preach the gospel
13:00of the kingdom of heaven
13:03and the gospel of the coming of the king.
13:08Then went out to Him,
13:10Jerusalem, all Judea,
13:11all the region around about Jordan,
13:13were baptized of Him in Jordan,
13:16confessing their sins.
13:17This is water baptism
13:19in the Jordan River.
13:22Now the Jordan River
13:23is not the most glamorous place
13:25to get baptized, I suppose.
13:27It tends to be like
13:28a little old Texas creek.
13:30They don't say creek in Texas,
13:31they say creek.
13:33Up the creek there.
13:35There's nothing glamorous
13:36about the Jordan River.
13:39In fact, there's nothing glamorous
13:40about getting baptized.
13:41It's a testimony.
13:46But in this case,
13:48when you were baptized by John,
13:50you pledged to repent.
13:53That was the initial idea
13:55of baptism,
13:56of water baptism.
13:59Now this I want to make very clear.
14:02Let's read on.
14:04They were baptized in the Jordan River,
14:06confessing their sins,
14:07verse 7.
14:07But when he saw many
14:09of the Pharisees
14:09and Sadducees come
14:10to his baptism,
14:12he said unto them,
14:13O generation of vipers,
14:15you bunch of snakes,
14:17who has warned you
14:18to flee from the wrath to come?
14:22Bring forth,
14:23therefore fruits meet
14:25for repentance.
14:27In other words,
14:28you people are going to have
14:29to change the way you live.
14:31You're going to have to start
14:32living a repentant lifestyle.
14:34And that was the key
14:38or the central idea
14:40of John's baptism.
14:42Repentance.
14:43Repentance means
14:44having a change of mind,
14:46changing the way you think.
14:48Verse 9,
14:49And think not,
14:50say within yourselves,
14:51we have Abraham as our father.
14:53For I say unto you
14:55that God is able of these stones
14:57to raise up children of Abraham.
14:59John is saying,
15:00you think you are a bunch
15:01of hot shots
15:02because you have Father Abraham.
15:04God doesn't need you.
15:06It's what John is really saying.
15:10And now also the axe
15:11is laid unto the root of the trees.
15:14Therefore every tree
15:15which bringeth not forth
15:16good fruit is hewn down,
15:18cast into the fire.
15:19And then verse 11 says,
15:21And I indeed baptize you
15:23with water unto repentance.
15:26There you go, right there.
15:27This is the baptism of John.
15:29If you ever want to know
15:30what it is,
15:31just mark Matthew 3, 11.
15:34That's the baptism of John.
15:36I indeed baptize you
15:38with water unto repentance.
15:41Were they baptized unto salvation?
15:44That is, did John dunk them
15:45and when they came up
15:46they were saved?
15:47No way.
15:50They were dunked
15:51as an act of cleansing
15:53or a pledge to be cleansed.
15:55or to cleanse their own lives
15:59or to have a change of mind
16:00or to repent.
16:02He says,
16:03I baptize you with water
16:05unto repentance
16:05but he that cometh after me
16:07is mightier than I
16:08whose shoes I am not worthy to bear.
16:09He shall baptize you
16:11with the Holy Ghost
16:12and with fire.
16:13Now we've got two different
16:14baptisms here.
16:16One baptism with water
16:18for repentance.
16:19Another baptism with the Holy Spirit
16:21with fire.
16:24When did the fire come?
16:26It came at Pentecost
16:27when the flames rested upon
16:29the heads of the twelve
16:31there in the room
16:32where they received
16:33the Spirit of God.
16:34And so John is chronicling
16:38he is announcing
16:40a series or a sequence
16:42of events here
16:43that's going to lay out
16:45God's plan of redemption.
16:48And I'm going to read
16:49verse 12 next.
16:51He shall baptize you
16:52with the Holy Ghost
16:52and with fire
16:53whose fan is in his hand
16:54and he will thoroughly
16:55purge his floor
16:56gather his wheat
16:57into the gardener
16:58but he will burn up
16:59the chaff
17:00with unquenchable fire.
17:02What is that
17:02burning up the chaff
17:04with unquenchable fire?
17:05That's the great
17:05and terrible day of the Lord.
17:06That's the tribulation period.
17:09In other words
17:09God is coming to Israel
17:12in the form of a man
17:14Christ Jesus
17:16and he's coming
17:19with a new kind of baptism
17:21but he's also
17:23coming with the promise
17:25that if Israel
17:26does not follow him
17:28he will be forced to judge
17:30Israel and the world.
17:32This is basically
17:33the theme of the entire Bible.
17:37So going back
17:38to Acts 19
17:39A.D. 56
17:41Paul found certain disciples
17:45Acts 19.2
17:47and he said unto them
17:48have you received
17:48the Holy Ghost
17:49since you believe?
17:52An interesting question.
17:54What is it that they believe?
17:58They believe something
17:59and Paul is basing
18:01the action
18:02that he's about to take
18:03on a question.
18:04The question is
18:05have you received
18:06the Holy Ghost
18:07since you believed?
18:08This is a rhetorical question
18:09on behalf of Paul.
18:11It's a rhetorical question.
18:13Paul knew very well
18:14that they had not received
18:15the Holy Ghost
18:16since they believed.
18:19But he was using
18:20a literary device here
18:22or a rhetorical device
18:23and saying
18:24as you might say
18:26to somebody
18:27who doesn't know the Lord
18:28have you received
18:30the Holy Spirit
18:30into your life
18:31knowing full well
18:32that they haven't?
18:33You go to your Uncle John
18:34who lives in Sioux Falls,
18:36South Dakota
18:36and you've been trying
18:37to get him to come to Christ
18:39for years and years and years
18:40and he's very resistant.
18:42You go to him
18:42and sitting at a table
18:44some evening
18:45and you feel
18:46that the occasion
18:46is just right
18:47and so you say to him
18:48have you received
18:49the Holy Ghost
18:49into your life?
18:51And after he finishes
18:52choking on his coffee
18:53it's time
18:55for a little conversation.
18:58The point is
18:59Paul is making a point.
19:02It's kind of shocking
19:03to these people.
19:05We haven't even heard
19:06about there being
19:07any Holy Ghost.
19:08What do you mean?
19:10And these guys
19:11are Jewish proselytes
19:13or possibly Hellenistic Jews.
19:15We don't know for sure.
19:17And he said to them
19:18unto what then
19:20were ye baptized?
19:22And they said
19:24unto John's baptism.
19:26Which means
19:27that these people
19:28had been dipped in water
19:29and when they came up
19:31in their hearts
19:33they had pronounced repentance.
19:34I repent
19:35of the sins
19:36that I have committed.
19:37I repent of living
19:38in the ways of this world
19:40and I now believe.
19:42I do this
19:43within the sphere
19:44of the fact
19:45that I now believe
19:46that Messiah
19:46is about to arrive
19:48on planet Earth.
19:51In other words
19:51that was the spirit
19:52of John's baptism.
19:54Change your mind
19:55because he's coming
19:56and you've got to
19:56get ready for him.
19:58And so these guys
19:59that Paul met
19:59are still getting ready
20:01for the coming
20:02of the Messiah.
20:04And of course
20:04they haven't received
20:05the Holy Spirit
20:06because they're not
20:07even saved.
20:07They don't know
20:08what salvation is.
20:09They have no clue.
20:12Then said Paul,
20:13John verily baptized
20:15with the baptism
20:15of repentance.
20:17By the way,
20:18do Christians get baptized
20:19with the baptism
20:20of repentance?
20:22No.
20:23Do you have to repent
20:24when you get baptized?
20:26Absolutely not.
20:28You might want to,
20:30but there's no requirement
20:31that before you get
20:33dipped in the water
20:33that you have to say,
20:35I repent
20:36of the things
20:37that I have done
20:38and my plan
20:39is now to repent
20:40and live a better life.
20:43There's no requirement.
20:45But in John's water baptism,
20:47there is definitely
20:48a requirement.
20:49That's the basis
20:50of the baptism.
20:51Repent because
20:52Messiah is coming.
20:55So Paul said to them,
20:58John truly baptized
21:00with the baptism
21:01of repentance,
21:02saying to the people
21:02that they should believe
21:03on him which should
21:04come after him,
21:05that is on Christ Jesus.
21:07And when they heard this,
21:08they were baptized
21:09in the name
21:10of the Lord Jesus.
21:13And when Paul
21:14laid his hands upon them,
21:15the Holy Ghost
21:16came upon them,
21:16and they spoke with tongues,
21:18and they prophesied,
21:19and all the men
21:20were about twelve.
21:23So, here's the picture.
21:25Paul encounters
21:26these people
21:27who are preaching
21:28the coming
21:29of the Messiah,
21:31baptized with
21:32the baptism of John.
21:34And Paul encounters them
21:35and says,
21:36have you received
21:37the Holy Spirit?
21:38Hey, we don't,
21:38what do you mean
21:39the Holy Spirit?
21:40And Paul lays hands
21:42on them.
21:42They received
21:43the Lord Jesus Christ,
21:44and immediately
21:45they were baptized
21:45in a nearby pond.
21:48And when they came
21:48out of the pond,
21:49they were speaking
21:50in new languages.
21:52The Holy Ghost
21:52came upon them,
21:53they spoke with tongues
21:54and prophesied.
21:56Wrong.
21:58No pond here.
22:00No pond right here.
22:03When they heard this,
22:04verse 5,
22:05they were baptized
22:05in the name
22:06of the Lord Jesus,
22:07and when Paul
22:08laid his hands upon them,
22:10the Holy Ghost
22:11came on them,
22:12and they spoke
22:12with tongues
22:13and prophesied.
22:13There's no dipping
22:14in the water pond here.
22:16They were baptized
22:17with the Holy Spirit.
22:20And you're saying,
22:21Gary, are you preaching
22:22against water baptism?
22:24I do water baptisms
22:25myself.
22:27So no,
22:28I'm not teaching
22:29against water baptism.
22:31What I'm doing
22:32is teaching in favor
22:33of the baptism
22:34of the Holy Spirit.
22:35Romans chapter 6,
22:36what shall we say then?
22:37Should we continue
22:38in sin
22:39that grace may abound?
22:41God forbid.
22:42How shall we
22:43that are dead to sin
22:44live any longer therein?
22:46Know ye not
22:46that so many of us
22:47as were baptized
22:48into Jesus Christ
22:50were baptized
22:51into His death?
22:53Well, that's what Paul
22:55was doing
22:55with these people.
22:56He was baptizing
22:57these former
22:59proselytes
23:00of John the Baptist
23:01into the death
23:03of Christ.
23:04And now,
23:05they were able
23:06to receive
23:07the Holy Spirit.
23:09Verse 4 of Romans 6,
23:10therefore are we
23:11buried with Him
23:12by baptism
23:13into death,
23:14that like as Christ
23:15was raised up
23:16from the dead
23:17by the glory
23:18of the Father,
23:18even so we also
23:20should walk
23:20in newness of life.
23:23For if we've been
23:23planted together
23:24in the likeness
23:25of His death,
23:26we shall also
23:26in the likeness
23:27of His resurrection.
23:29Knowing this,
23:30that our old man
23:31is crucified with Him,
23:33that the body of sin
23:35might be destroyed,
23:36that henceforth
23:36we should not serve sin.
23:38for he that is dead
23:39is freed from sin.
23:42Now,
23:42if we be dead
23:43with Christ,
23:44we believe that we
23:45shall also live
23:46with Him,
23:47knowing that Christ
23:48being raised from the dead
23:49dieth no more.
23:50And so it goes.
23:52The believer's death
23:53to sin
23:54is the agency
23:57and mechanism
23:58of the baptism
24:00of Christ Jesus.
24:02It is this baptism,
24:06by the way,
24:08and turn to Colossians now,
24:10chapter 2,
24:12Colossians chapter 1,
24:14verse 9.
24:15It's this baptism,
24:16by the way,
24:17that has been
24:18at the root
24:19of a great deal
24:20of misunderstanding.
24:22Verses 9 through 14.
24:25For this cause,
24:26we also,
24:27since the day we heard it,
24:28do not cease
24:29to pray for you.
24:30He said,
24:32I've heard about your faith
24:34in Jesus Christ,
24:35and I'm going to be
24:36in prayer for you.
24:38I do not cease
24:39to pray for you
24:40and to desire
24:40that you might be filled
24:42with the knowledge
24:42of His will
24:43in all wisdom
24:45and spiritual understanding.
24:46In other words,
24:47Paul says,
24:48I know that you are
24:49believers in Christ,
24:50that you have been
24:51indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
24:53He's heard of the faith
24:55of the Colossians,
24:57and this has stimulated
24:59him to pray
25:00for the Colossians.
25:03And what's he praying?
25:04I pray that you'll be
25:06filled with the knowledge
25:07of His will
25:07in all wisdom
25:08and spiritual understanding.
25:09In other words,
25:10he doesn't want them
25:10to remain static
25:11in their belief.
25:14He wants them to
25:16move forward
25:17in their belief.
25:19I pray that you'll be
25:22filled with the knowledge
25:23of His will
25:24in all wisdom
25:25and spiritual understanding.
25:27That you might walk
25:28worthy of the Lord
25:29unto all pleasing.
25:31The whole idea
25:32of Christianity
25:33is that you're not
25:34in stasis.
25:35You're moving.
25:36You're growing.
25:38Being fruitful
25:39in every good work
25:40and increasing
25:40in the knowledge
25:41of God.
25:42Strengthened with all might
25:43according to His glorious power
25:44unto all patience
25:46and longsuffering
25:46with joyfulness.
25:49Giving thanks
25:50unto the Father
25:50which hath made us
25:53fit to be partakers
25:55of the inheritance
25:56of the saints
25:57in light
25:59who hath delivered us
26:00from the power
26:01of darkness
26:02and hath translated us
26:03into the kingdom
26:04of His dear Son
26:06in whom we have
26:08redemption
26:08through His blood
26:09even the forgiveness
26:11of sins.
26:13Now those verses
26:16are spoken
26:18from Paul's heart.
26:19This was his
26:19central core principle
26:21when he preached
26:22the gospel.
26:23His core principle
26:24was that
26:26the Christians
26:27not remain
26:28in stasis.
26:29In other words
26:29at an infantile
26:31or elementary level
26:32of belief
26:32but that we should grow.
26:34That we should
26:35continue to grow.
26:37Why?
26:40Because we have
26:40been delivered
26:41from the power
26:42of darkness
26:42verse 13
26:43and we have
26:44been translated
26:44into the kingdom
26:45of His dear Son.
26:50When you begin
26:51to talk about
26:52Paul then
26:53in his initial
26:54missionary journeys
26:56and you begin
26:57to look at what
26:58he's really got
26:59on his mind
27:00suddenly it brings
27:01a whole new
27:02vista
27:03into your head
27:04going back
27:05to Acts 19
27:06he encounters
27:08these people
27:09who are zealous.
27:11They are out
27:12teaching that
27:12Jesus
27:13or that is
27:14Messiah
27:15is coming soon.
27:17How do you know
27:19Messiah is coming soon?
27:20Because we
27:21have heard
27:21of the teaching
27:22of John the Baptist
27:23who announced it.
27:25How long ago
27:26was it that
27:27John the Baptist
27:28was teaching?
27:30It was about
27:3026 or 27 years ago.
27:33And they're still
27:34out preaching
27:34the gospel
27:35of the kingdom.
27:37They are arrested
27:38in their development.
27:40That is to say
27:40they're stuck.
27:42And Paul says
27:43wait a minute
27:43wait a minute
27:44wait a minute
27:44have you heard
27:45about the baptism
27:46of the Holy Ghost?
27:48I'm lingering
27:49here for a while
27:50because this is
27:51an interesting
27:51and by the way
27:52I was asked
27:52to linger here
27:53because there are
27:54several kind of
27:54interesting questions.
27:57What would you
27:58have asked
27:59these people
27:59if you had been
28:01Paul
28:01and you walk
28:02up to them
28:02you knew
28:04what they
28:04were teaching
28:05that is
28:05they were
28:06teaching
28:06the baptism
28:07of John
28:07and in your
28:08heart
28:08you knew
28:09that wait
28:09a minute
28:09they're behind
28:10the time
28:10something better
28:11has happened.
28:12What would you
28:13say to them?
28:15You might say
28:15something like
28:16well I'll bet
28:19you haven't heard
28:20about the fact
28:21that Messiah
28:21actually came
28:23and lived
28:23on earth
28:24and was lifted
28:25up and crucified
28:25dead
28:26bare
28:26he rose
28:26the third day.
28:27he could have
28:28said those
28:29kinds of
28:30things to them
28:31but he's not
28:32recorded here
28:33as having said
28:34that.
28:34What he did
28:35say
28:36he asked a
28:37rhetorical
28:37question
28:38have you
28:38received the
28:39Holy Ghost
28:39since you
28:40believed?
28:41Now that's
28:41an interesting
28:42question
28:43bypassing the
28:45whole what we
28:46usually think of
28:46as the gospel
28:47the five points
28:49or the three
28:50points you know
28:50when you knock
28:51on a door
28:51and bring
28:52somebody the
28:52gospel
28:52Paul's not
28:53using any
28:54of those
28:54he's just
28:55saying have
28:55you received
28:56the Holy Ghost
28:57what Holy Ghost
28:59they say
28:59interesting idea
29:01have you ever
29:03thought of
29:04witnessing in
29:04that way?
29:06Talk to somebody
29:07have you received
29:07the Holy Spirit
29:08into your life?
29:10Wow
29:10what a conversation
29:11starter
29:11that would be
29:12I didn't even
29:14know there was
29:14such a thing
29:15as the Holy Ghost
29:16or they may have
29:17heard about the
29:17Holy Ghost
29:18now I don't
29:18want to have
29:19anything to do
29:20with the Holy Ghost
29:21or whatever
29:21but what an
29:22opportunity
29:23what a springboard
29:24for conversation
29:25and he said
29:26to them
29:27unto what
29:28were you then
29:28baptized
29:29they said
29:29unto John's
29:30baptism
29:31for them
29:32the highest
29:33thing was
29:34repent
29:34because he's
29:35coming
29:35repent
29:36because he's
29:37coming
29:37we have
29:39a much
29:39much higher
29:40calling
29:40than that
29:41and that's
29:43why I think
29:43this is in
29:44here the way
29:44it is
29:45we have
29:46a calling
29:47that tells
29:48us something
29:49I'm going to
29:50go back
29:51and I hadn't
29:51planned on
29:52doing this
29:52but I'm
29:53going to go
29:53back to
29:53Colossians
29:54chapter 1
29:56and read
29:56something
29:57again
29:58because
30:00this to me
30:01adds the
30:02final thought
30:03in this
30:04Colossians 1
30:069
30:06for this
30:07cause we
30:07also since
30:08the day we
30:08heard it
30:09do not cease
30:09to pray for
30:10you and
30:10desire that
30:11you might
30:11be filled
30:12with the
30:13knowledge of
30:13his will
30:14in all
30:15wisdom
30:15and spiritual
30:16understanding
30:17that you
30:18might walk
30:19worthy of
30:19the Lord
30:20unto all
30:20pleasing
30:21being fruitful
30:21in every
30:22good work
30:22increasing
30:23in the
30:24knowledge
30:24of God
30:24strengthened
30:25with all
30:26might
30:26according to
30:26his glorious
30:27power
30:27unto the
30:27patience
30:28and long
30:28suffering
30:28with joyfulness
30:29unto all
30:31patience
30:32and long
30:33suffering
30:33with joyfulness
30:34giving thanks
30:35to the
30:35Father
30:35which hath
30:36made us
30:36meet to be
30:37partakers
30:37of the
30:37inheritance
30:38of the
30:38saints
30:39of light
30:39who hath
30:41delivered us
30:42from the
30:42power of
30:43darkness
30:43and hath
30:45translated us
30:46into the
30:47kingdom
30:47of his
30:48dear
30:49Son
30:51in whom
30:52we have
30:53redemption
30:53past
30:56perfect
30:56tense
30:57we have
30:58permanent
30:59redemption
30:59through his
31:01blood
31:01even the
31:02forgiveness
31:02of sins
31:03what these
31:06verses are
31:07saying
31:07is
31:08if you
31:10are saved
31:11you will
31:13repent
31:14it's the
31:17total
31:17opposite
31:17of what
31:18John the
31:18Baptist
31:19said
31:19repent
31:20and be
31:21baptized
31:22because he's
31:23coming
31:24and you need
31:25to be ready
31:25for him
31:26the gospel
31:27as taught
31:28by Paul
31:29is the
31:29total
31:30opposite
31:30you are
31:32saved
31:32you have
31:33been
31:34baptized
31:34you have
31:35received
31:36the Holy
31:36Spirit
31:37and because
31:38of that
31:39you will
31:40repent
31:41if you
31:42are saved
31:43you will
31:44repent
31:44that is
31:47the complexity
31:48of Paul's
31:49gospel
31:50Paul's
31:51gospel
31:51when truly
31:52rendered
31:52always causes
31:53you to
31:54say wait
31:55a minute
31:56I don't
31:56know whether
31:57I want to
31:57think about
31:57that or
31:58not
31:58that is
31:59too
31:59complicated
32:00but that's
32:01what Paul's
32:02gospel
32:02always does
32:03it puts
32:04things in
32:04terms
32:05that are
32:06just a
32:06stage
32:07beyond
32:07everyday
32:07living
32:08we
32:09operate
32:10in the
32:10power of
32:11God
32:11in the
32:12energy
32:13of God
32:13Paul says
32:14in two or
32:15three other
32:15of his
32:16epistles
32:16and it
32:18is God's
32:19energy
32:19that enables
32:20us to
32:21live
32:21the new
32:22life that
32:23we have
32:23in Christ
32:24Jesus
32:24in the
32:25Holy
32:26Spirit
32:26we have
32:28been
32:28translated
32:29into the
32:30kingdom
32:31of his
32:33dear son
32:34Colossians
32:341
32:3513
32:35again
32:36in the
32:37perfect
32:37tense
32:38something
32:39accomplished
32:40in the
32:41past
32:41and
32:42something
32:43which
32:43continues
32:44to be
32:44true
32:45and so
32:46when you
32:47go back
32:47to Acts
32:4819
32:48and encounter
32:50this question
32:51asked by
32:52Paul
32:52have you
32:52received
32:53the Holy
32:53Ghost
32:53since you
32:54believed
32:54and they
32:55said we
32:56haven't even
32:56heard whether
32:57there is
32:57such a thing
32:58as a Holy
32:58Ghost
32:58this is one
32:59of the
32:59great
33:00conversations
33:01of all
33:01time
33:02and I'm
33:03glad that
33:04it's recorded
33:04in the
33:05Bible
33:05because
33:06it just
33:07casts
33:07all kinds
33:08of light
33:09on
33:10baptism
33:11that is
33:12to say
33:12the baptism
33:13that we
33:14have
33:14experienced
33:15by being
33:16baptized
33:16into
33:17the life
33:18of Christ
33:19Jesus
33:19John
33:21verse 4
33:22there in
33:23Acts 19
33:23barely baptized
33:25with a
33:25baptism
33:25of repentance
33:26saying unto
33:28the people
33:29they which
33:29should believe
33:30on him
33:31which should
33:31come after
33:32him
33:32that is
33:32on Christ
33:33Jesus
33:33when they
33:35heard this
33:37they were
33:37baptized
33:37in
33:38and actually
33:40in the Greek
33:40it says
33:40into
33:41the name
33:43of the
33:44Lord Jesus
33:45there is
33:46no water
33:47here
33:47folks
33:48because the
33:50process of
33:51baptism
33:51does not
33:52involve water
33:53it involves
33:53being placed
33:54into
33:55hypostatic
33:56union
33:56spiritual
33:57union
33:57with God
33:59through
33:59Christ
34:00notice that
34:02it's done
34:02in the
34:03name
34:04of the
34:05Lord
34:05Jesus
34:06now
34:08the Jews
34:09in the
34:09Old Testament
34:10always referred
34:11to God
34:12as Hashem
34:13the name
34:14they don't
34:16say his
34:17name
34:17nor is
34:19his name
34:20known
34:20we know
34:21it as
34:21the
34:21which is
34:23commonly
34:23pronounced
34:23Jehovah
34:24but really
34:26God's
34:27true actual
34:28name
34:28in Hebrew
34:29is unknown
34:30it's been
34:30obscured
34:31the Jews
34:32it is said
34:33deliberately
34:34obscured it
34:34in ancient
34:35days
34:35so that
34:36it would
34:36not be
34:37on the
34:37lips
34:37of the
34:38unwashed
34:39on the
34:40lips
34:40of the
34:41general
34:41population
34:42and thereby
34:42be
34:43sullied
34:43so
34:44they kept
34:45his name
34:45which was
34:45considered
34:46to be
34:46really
34:47the highest
34:47artifact
34:48in all
34:49the heavens
34:49and the
34:49earth
34:50Jewish
34:51history
34:51says
34:52that they
34:52knew
34:52the name
34:53but that
34:54they obscured
34:54it in two
34:55or three
34:55different ways
34:56finally reducing
34:57it to
34:58four
34:58initials
35:00even
35:01then
35:01the Jews
35:02don't pronounce
35:03the four
35:03initials
35:04to this
35:04very day
35:05no Jew
35:05will say
35:06Yahweh
35:07or Jehovah
35:07they just
35:08say Adonai
35:09when they run
35:10across that
35:11four letter
35:11word
35:12lest they
35:12profane
35:13the name
35:14of God
35:14because to
35:15them it is
35:15so high
35:16and so
35:17holy
35:17that it's
35:18untouchable
35:19but guess
35:21what
35:22verse 5
35:25when they
35:25heard this
35:26they were
35:27baptized
35:27in the
35:28name
35:29of the
35:30Lord
35:30Jesus
35:30the very
35:31name
35:32of Jesus
35:33is sufficient
35:34unto salvation
35:35so in the
35:37New Testament
35:38Hashem
35:39becomes
35:39Jesus
35:40and we
35:41pronounce his
35:42name all
35:42the time
35:42we talk
35:43about him
35:44like he's
35:44one of the
35:45family
35:45which by
35:46the way
35:46he is
35:46we have
35:47been adopted
35:47into the
35:48family of
35:48the Lord
35:48Jesus
35:49Christ
35:49and we
35:50just call
35:50him
35:51Jesus
35:51we have
35:52been
35:52baptized
35:52into his
35:53name
35:53what does
35:54that mean
35:54we have
35:54been adopted
35:55into his
35:56family
35:57we are
35:58like little
35:59kids
36:00in a
36:00waiting room
36:01waiting for
36:02the adults
36:02in the
36:03other room
36:03to sign
36:04all the
36:04papers
36:04so that
36:05we'll be
36:05brought
36:06into that
36:06room
36:06introduced
36:07to our
36:07parents
36:08and taken
36:08home
36:08our
36:09position
36:10is
36:10that the
36:11papers
36:12have been
36:12signed
36:13and we're
36:13in the
36:13waiting room
36:14and in
36:15the twinkling
36:15of an eye
36:16we're going
36:16to be moved
36:17over into
36:17the kingdom
36:18of heaven
36:18where we'll
36:19live with
36:19our family
36:20that family
36:21just happens
36:22to be
36:22the family
36:23of God
36:24and that
36:25process
36:26the adoptive
36:27process
36:28depends on
36:30this
36:30name
36:31there are
36:33light years
36:33of difference
36:34between being
36:35baptized
36:35unto repentance
36:37and being
36:37baptized
36:38in the name
36:39of the Lord
36:40Jesus
36:40and that's
36:42what this
36:43passage means
36:43to me
36:44chapter 19
36:46verses 1
36:47through 7
36:47what that is
36:48doing there
36:49is showing
36:50the enormous
36:51distance
36:52between
36:53mere
36:54repentance
36:54and baptism
36:56into
36:57the family
36:59of God
36:59a lot of
37:01people want
37:02to reduce
37:02Christianity
37:03down to
37:03repentance
37:04repent and
37:06sin no more
37:08you know
37:08you heard
37:09that message
37:09I'll give
37:10you 25
37:11minutes of
37:11repent and
37:12sin no more
37:13but
37:14no
37:16no no
37:17no
37:17that's
37:19fine
37:20for
37:20children
37:21but for
37:21adults
37:22we need
37:22to know
37:23the elements
37:23the finer
37:24points
37:24of our
37:25adoption
37:26and since
37:27we're going
37:28to be living
37:28in the family
37:29of God
37:29throughout
37:30eternity
37:30it would be
37:31a good
37:31thing to
37:32learn the
37:32finer points
37:33of what
37:33the family
37:33does
37:34what their
37:35customs
37:35are
37:36how they
37:36believe
37:36what their
37:37plans
37:37are
37:38how to
37:39comport
37:39oneself
37:39in the
37:40manner
37:41in the
37:41future
37:41when we
37:42actually get
37:42to live
37:43in the
37:44house
37:44of God
37:44we're
37:45sort of
37:46starting out
37:47as grubby
37:47school children
37:48right now
37:49learning how
37:49to live
37:50in the
37:50Lord
37:51knowing
37:51that one
37:51of these
37:52days
37:52we're
37:52going to
37:52get to
37:53live in
37:53the
37:53big

37:54that's
