Could Wales go to Eurovision alone?

We’re asking people in Wales if they think Wales would do better at Eurovision if we went as a lone entry. The UK do traditionally badly at the European song competition, so we couldn’t do much worse, could we?

But, um, Eurovision gives joy to people, wouldn't you?
00:05
Why not? As long as we don't win it.
00:08
The land of song.
00:09
Wales has an amazing history of music, stemming back centuries,
00:12
and forms a part of who we are now.
00:14
From Welsh male-voiced choirs to Charlotte Church,
00:17
Becapita, we've got to be one of the most musical countries in the world.
00:20
And for many of us, music is a part of our lives.
00:23
Across Europe, 50-odd countries have been competing in Eurovision,
00:27
including the United Kingdom,
00:28
but despite being one of the biggest nations in Europe,
00:31
we always do pretty badly performing under the Union flag.
00:34
Maybe it's time that Wales had a go by ourselves
00:37
and compete in Eurovision under the Red Dragon.
00:40
We already do so in the youth version of the competition,
00:42
and Welsh artists are on tour around the continent
00:45
right in this very moment.
00:46
So there could be an appeal to little old Wales
00:48
on the big stage at Europe's biggest song competition.
00:51
Yeah, they should.
00:53
Well, it depends, though, because, obviously,
00:55
I'm not sure how many countries are really in the world,
00:59
but there's quite a few.
01:00
The Wales have got a bit of a competition,
01:02
but they can do better, and they should.
01:06
I reckon we could do it.
01:08
I mean, Ireland's done it themselves,
01:09
and they've been able to do it successfully,
01:11
so I don't see why Wales couldn't.
01:13
Yeah, I mean, we are technically our own country,
01:16
just connected to Britain itself.
01:18
Yeah.
01:19
I don't know what is the singer from Wales,
01:23
but probably maybe just have good performance
01:28
for competing with England, probably,
01:32
because we have good talent for singing, I think so.
01:38
No.
01:39
Yes, we do very well with it.
01:41
Sure, but do we want to?
01:44
We have the Ice Dead group,
01:45
we have many other wonderful cultural exposés,
01:50
so why Eurovision?
01:53
Our musical heritage is obviously something
01:56
that would put us in good stead,
01:57
but aside from competing,
01:59
it's an opportunity for countries to showcase their heritage,
02:02
and in particular, their native language.
02:04
So maybe having a Cymraig song would be a chance
02:07
to set us aside from the competition.
02:09
Yeah, definitely,
02:11
and if we could get some of the Welsh language involved as well,
02:15
that would be really cool,
02:16
like the different songs,
02:17
and of course,
02:18
Welsh is always known for music and the culture as well.
02:21
So yeah, definitely,
02:22
that will be interesting to see for sure,
02:25
and well,
02:26
UK has never done really well in the Eurovision
02:28
as history has shown us,
02:30
but yeah, that would be quite cool if that was the case.
02:32
Yeah.
02:33
100%,
02:34
I mean, like,
02:35
we're the Welsh,
02:36
we're the choirs of the world,
02:37
don't we?
02:38
The Welsh,
02:39
and nothing sends shivers down your back
02:41
than that, does it?
02:43
So yeah,
02:44
I'm all for that,
02:45
all for it.
02:46
Yeah,
02:47
Wales is best,
02:48
Wales is best,
02:49
Wales is best,
02:50
Wales is best, bro.
02:51
I bring more, like,
02:52
loads of talent.
02:53
I bring more, like,
02:54
creators in Wales with music,
02:55
because like,
02:56
Wales ain't loud,
02:57
like,
02:58
big of a country,
02:59
it's not very noisy.
