00:00The views there are of people in our part of the world on air pollution and what it means for everyday life.
00:07Well, earlier I spoke to our politics reporter, Nick D, who's been looking into the health impact of the air we breathe.
00:13I started by asking him just how serious the problem is in the towns and cities across the UK and what we need to know about the risks where we live.
00:22Well, Iona, air pollution is known to have a serious effect on people's health, especially in built up areas.
00:30Long term exposure to dirty air can make breathing problems worse and increase the risk of heart and lung disease.
00:38Children, older people and those with existing conditions are most affected.
00:42The government says around 40,000 people die early each year because of pollution.
00:48And it's now taking steps to meet stricter air quality targets by 2030.
00:54Health experts have warned that people living in busy areas are more likely to suffer from poor air.
01:01Campaign groups like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth say more action is urgently needed.
01:07They want stronger rules on emissions and better protection for the most vulnerable.
01:12And there's growing pressure to act faster to improve the air people are breathing wherever they live.
01:20The government says it's committed to tackling air pollution and has promised to meet tougher targets by the year 2030.
01:27That includes working with councils on clean air zones and investing in greener transport.
01:33But some campaigners say progress is too slow and that people in the worst affected areas need more urgent help.
01:40Environmental groups have also warned that without strong national leadership, local schemes risk being too patchy to make a real difference.
01:50So what impact are clean air zones actually having and are they working as intended?
01:55Clean air zones are designed to reduce harmful traffic emissions by encouraging cleaner vehicles and improving public transport.
02:03In areas where they've been introduced, levels of nitrogen dioxide have fallen and fewer people are needing medical help for breathing problems.
02:13Councils say they've seen early signs of improvement in air quality and fewer high pollution days.
02:21The current Labour government supports clean air zones as part of its wider plan to protect health and cut emissions.
02:29Because we'll make sense of what's important work then.
02:31Absolutely.
02:32Goance people out now.
02:32What about theiva is evolving?
02:34Goance people out now.
02:35Goance people out now.
