00:00The episode begins. In the year 1961, in the town of Natchez, Mississippi,
00:05Kobe is applying for the position of secretary to the doll maker, Van Wert. The interview quickly
00:09turns into an engaging exchange of words between the two. Kobe, during the interview, observes
00:14Van Wert's peculiar philosophy that dolls represent the pinnacle of divine perfection.
00:19With a hint of humor, she jests that perhaps he would prefer her more if she were made of plastic.
00:24Despite the light-hearted exchange, the interview concludes with an unexpected twist.
00:28Kobe does not secure the position, and in a sudden and alarming turn of events,
00:32Van Wert's assistant, Eustace, renders her unconscious. Following Van Wert's orders,
00:37Eustace takes her away. Kobe finds herself taken to Van Wert's residence, referred to as his dollhouse.
00:42When she inquires about her presence there, Van Wert informs her that she will be staying for
00:46seven days to participate in a pageant. Despite her protests, he sternly tells her she has no choice.
00:52When she attempts to escape, Eustace swiftly stops her, ensuring her captivity. After Van Wert leaves,
00:57Kobe makes a chilling discovery. The dolls are real women who have been kidnapped and forced to
01:01compete in a pageant to become Van Wert's wife and the mother to his child. They take Kobe to their
01:06room where she tries to open the window. The other women share their experiences, noting they had
01:10all come for various reasons, and recounting how their disappearances would eventually draw suspicion
01:15from the authorities. Each woman had a different story, but Van Wert had targeted them for qualities
01:19he deemed ideal for his twisted collection. They emphasize the futility of escape, describing how they had
01:25been trapped for weeks. Harleen approached Kobe, suggesting she eat something before everything
01:29began. Kobe declined, noting she had seen Otis, the little boy, the previous day. Curious about Otis's
01:35mother, Kobe learns she had died two years prior. The official story was that she drowned in an accident
01:41while picking flowers in the swamp. However, Harleen hinted at a darker truth. Van Wert, feeling inadequate,
01:47discovered she had sought affection elsewhere. He had taken her and her lover to an old stone wishing
01:52well on the property and killed them both with an electric taser before ending their lives.
01:56That night, as the women gathered, they began questioning Kobe about the trick she had performed
02:00with the toy. They were curious and somewhat skeptical about how it had moved on its own.
02:05Kobe explained that her uncle had been into magic and had shown her some tricks when she was a child.
02:09Aurelia, however, was not convinced and expressed her disbelief. She seemed to suspect that Kobe was
02:15hiding something and made it clear that she also had her strategies for winning over Otis. Kobe started
02:20to wonder about the implications of winning the competition. She questioned what it would truly
02:24mean to become the child's mother and whether it also meant becoming Van Wert's wife. Despite the
02:29uncertainty, Aurelia believed that winning could give her the time needed to figure out an escape plan,
02:33emphasizing that survival was paramount and that they couldn't afford to take risks if it meant
02:38endangering their lives. As they were talking, a bell rang, signaling a test. The woman informed Kobe that
02:44it was time to be evaluated. They all moved to the living room, where Van Wert began his briefing. He
02:49explained that the focus for the evening would be on the le-lunche, as it was known in the quarter.
02:53He emphasized the importance of maintaining formality, comparable to that of an evening
02:57meal. Van Wert proceeded to outline the essentials of their task, describing the arrangement of utensils
03:02and glassware, salad fork, meat fork, bouillon spoon, water glass, apollinaris, and so on. He detailed
03:09the hypothetical menu for the afternoon, which included crawfish cardinal, terrapin soup, stuffed drum,
03:14as well as assorted ices and pies. Precision was key, and any deviations from the correct
03:19arrangement would result in the deduction of points. The woman with the most points at the
03:23end of the test would be discarded. With only one minute to set the table for lunch, the women
03:27began working swiftly and meticulously, knowing that every second and every move counted in this
03:32high-stakes evaluation. Van Wert began his meticulous evaluation. He approached Aurelia first,
03:38noting the correct placement of the knife facing toward the plate, the fruit spoon in the proper
03:41position, and the apollinaris glass correctly placed, awarding her a perfect score. Next,
03:46he moved to Harleen, and critiqued her tragic napkin fold, and the incorrect placement of the
03:51salad and meat forks, resulting in two points against her. When evaluating Bonnie, Van Wert noted
03:56her knife was facing the wrong way, and the salted nut bowl was misplaced. For Kobe, he identified
04:01errors with using a bouillon spoon instead of a terrapin fork, and a misplaced water glass,
04:06costing her four points. Finally, Van Wert expressed his disappointment in Faye, citing numerous
04:11errors with napkins, utensils, and glassware. With too many infractions to count, Eustace
04:16tased Faye, ending her life, and disposed of her body in a well. Kobe performed a magic trick
04:21for Otis again. Intrigued, Otis asked if it was just a trick, and Kobe revealed it was a
04:26gift she had since childhood. She explained her fear of her family's reaction, given their
04:30strict rules about right and wrong, which led her to leave in search of freedom. Otis shared
04:34that he felt different too, having stopped attending school due to bullying and being labeled
04:39awed by teachers. Kobe acknowledged how difficult it was to be different and sympathize with Otis
04:43missing his mother. When he admitted he hoped she would win and become his new mom, she explained
04:48she wouldn't be a good mother if she were sad about the dolls being thrown down the well.
04:51Kobe clarified that the dolls were her friends and made a heartfelt promise, urging Otis to
04:56tell his father to stop the horrific practice and let everyone go. She assured him that she
05:00would be the best mommy he could ever want, crossing her heart as a solemn vow. Later that
05:04night, Otis approached his father with a look of concern and asked if he was in trouble.
05:09His father responded, explaining that life often presents challenges, and as good Christians,
05:14they must face these challenges directly. Reflecting on the loss of Otis' mother, he
05:18mentioned that he believed the only suitable replacement would be someone perfect. He reassured
05:22Otis that he was determined to find the best possible mommy for him, someone who would always
05:27be there for him. After reaffirming his trust in his father, Otis was asked if he had something
05:31specific he wanted to discuss. Hesitating, Otis decided not to pursue the conversation
05:36further and simply said nothing before leaving the room. The next day, the bell rang, signaling
05:40the women to prepare once again. Van Wirt arrived and announced the day's challenge. He explained
05:45that they would be judged on their ability to transform a mundane household chore into a form
05:50of art, the proper ironing and folding of a shirt, according to the meticulous standards
05:54set by Monsieur Seydoux in his renowned Dauphine Street Laundry. Van Wirt emphasized the importance
05:59of Seydoux's unique ironing spray, which used courvoisier instead of raw alcohol, and included
06:04various herbs to create a distinctive aroma. The women were given three minutes to prepare
06:09their solutions and iron and fold their shirts. As they worked, Van Wirt issued commands, stressing
06:15the importance of the proper mixing and application of the solution, and the distinction between
06:19folds and creases. Once the time was up, he began evaluating their work. First, he approached
06:24Harleen, criticizing her use of too much lavender and insufficient courvoisier, deducting three points.
06:29He then moved to Kobe, noting excessive starch that made the shirt almost animate and a scorch mark,
06:34expressing his disappointment. As punishment, he instructed her to place her left hand on the board
06:38and then burned her hand with the iron, reminding her to learn from the experience. Van Wirt then
06:43evaluated Aurelia, who had done everything correctly. Finally, he turned to Bonnie, criticizing her for
06:48creating creases instead of folds and using too little starch. He also remarked on the unpleasant
06:53smell, likening it to a brothel, and deducted four points. As Bonnie screamed in protest,
06:58she was killed. Van Wirt concluded by announcing that the next day would be the final test, where the
07:03one who excelled would be granted a great honor, while the others would face an unspecified fate.
07:08Harleen approached Kobe with a desperate plan. She suggested that they should jump their captors
07:12when they came in, making weapons out of whatever they could find and attacking them, believing they
07:16couldn't shoot all of them at once. Kobe lamented that they should have attempted this when there were
07:20more of them. Kobe reflected on how she had thought she had gotten through to Otis, expressing her anger
07:25and frustration. If chosen as his mother, she swore she would strangle him at the first opportunity.
07:30Harleen, however, expressed sympathy for Otis, noting that she thought Van Wirt seemed to favor
07:34her. Harleen pointed out that while Van Wirt had punished her by ironing her hand, he could have
07:39easily thrown her into the well for burning one of his shirts. She speculated that Van Wirt was aware
07:44of his son's liking for Kobe. Unbeknownst to them, Aurelia overheard their conversation while standing by
07:49the door, absorbing the details of their exchange. Aurelia, determined to prevent Kobe from winning,
07:55from a lightbulb and attempted to stab her from behind. However, anticipating her plan,
07:59Kobe and Harleen had placed a doll dressed in Kobe's clothes, so Aurelia ended up stabbing the
08:04doll instead. Kobe and Harleen then approached her from behind. Aurelia, realizing her failure,
08:09exclaimed that she knew Van Wirt favored Kobe and was determined not to die the next day.
08:14Kobe reassured her that none of them had to die, proposing a different plan. Skeptical, Aurelia
08:18questioned how they could escape, suggesting magic wouldn't save them. Kobe calmly explained that they
08:23were going to walk out the front door. Aurelia pointed out that the estate spanned 10 miles in
08:27every direction, making escape seemingly impossible as they would be hunted down. Kobe clarified that
08:32their captors wouldn't know about their escape immediately, giving them a crucial head start.
08:36She revealed the plan. They would use Van Wirt's obsession with dolls to their advantage. By creating
08:41convincing decoys, they could buy themselves enough time to make their escape. As part of their plan,
08:46the women set up decoy dolls, and Kobe used her magic to unlock the door. As they began their escape,
08:51Kobe insisted they should take Otis with them, but the other two women refused and ran away while
08:55Kobe returned to the house. Kobe went to Otis's room, urging him to come with her because his
09:00father was dangerous. However, Otis apologized and tased her. Meanwhile, in the woods, Harleen fell and
09:06screamed for Aurelia to help her. Aurelia returned, seemingly to assist, but intended to kill Harleen for
09:11being loud and slow. Before she could act, Eustace arrived and shot both Aurelia and Harleen. Back in the
09:16house, Kobe was tied up. Van Wirt declared her the winner of the contest, citing her
09:21devotion to his son, and then began transforming her into a human doll. During the transformation,
09:26Kobe's magical powers interfered with the electricity, which sent an alert to the witches at Miss
09:30Robichaux's academy in New Orleans. Two witches arrived, rescuing Kobe and setting Van Wirt and
09:35Eustace on fire. Otis, wanting to stay with Kobe, left with her and the witches. The episode concluded
09:40with their arrival at Miss Robichaux Academy. Otis was introduced to a young Myrtle Snow. Otis goes by
09:46his middle name and introduces himself as Spaulding.
