Transcript
00:00hello today I'm gonna talk about the best two-year degrees that I will choose
00:13but the goal here is not to talk about what I really will choose if I was
00:18looking for one but is to work out a strategy to how to narrow it down I know
00:26most of us unfortunately are not most of us are let me phrase it this way don't
00:39know what we want we not everybody is born knowing what they wanted to do and
00:46and that is very normal indeed this other way that is not common and and of
00:56course we have to also take in account other factors like what financial
01:04factor age and situation the reason I'm putting this out is because you know
01:15there is many of course I sympathize as many young individuals who mainly young
01:21individuals who want to chance and a two-year degree can be a great choice
01:27of course there's other avenues to better yourself one of them one of which is
01:34vocational training and the other is pursue a bigger degree like a four-year
01:42degree and so on so but we're gonna focus today on that two-year degree and of
01:48course another reason why I'm doing this is because our economy not being doing
01:52great lately and I feel that we might be entering downturn in the economy and and if
02:05that happen it's a good idea to have a vision of what you want to do I remember
02:13this happened to me what is it 2007 or so that you know where I lost my job so so
02:26these things are they can be these subjects maybe not the most sexy subjects
02:34but they are important subjects so let's start okay let's start with the
02:41benefits of a two-year degree in general what is what the benefit of a two-year
02:48degree it save time saving which mean less time you are in school however I want to point
02:57that out that many many two-year degrees are more than a two-year even if you if you are a good
03:08student and you don't postpone graduation many of them require you especially the
03:17one that eventually pay better require you of taking a lot lots of generals in
03:23order to enter the program then the program itself is two years and in certain
03:29situation more so so you just but nevertheless if you were pursuing this
03:35comparatively to a four-year degree which will be longer with some of those degrees you might you
03:43still be be able to save time of course less time in school is less money you have to spend and
03:55and and overall it's just it's relatively a smaller investment you know especially for non-traditional
04:07students or students who are not sure what they want to do in life so if if it was let's say you go
04:16through the program you finish it and then you don't work in it I actually have done that and I did do
04:27that and I didn't work in it one of them I actually that my current job was paying me more so I didn't
04:36switch career the other one was like that it was too competitive and I already had a career at that
04:43point but so you know because you might not work in that field but at least it's a limited investment
04:53it's a I can't say I won't say anything is a loss because there's a invest there is something to gain
05:00from any kind of education you know but it is definitely if you look at it in in terms of dollars
05:07or years it's definitely a less you know you're not losing as much as somebody who spent four to six
05:19years in college or maybe more to only to find out later that he or she doesn't want to do that job
05:28you are more productive meaning you start working in the field faster however I want to emphasize one thing
05:40especially if the economy is not doing good that can play a role of course and if your school is not locally known
05:52for for here we are talking mainly a community college and you better find a community a community
05:59college or a junior college that is known for its for its you know reputation I remember I did graduate
06:14during 2007 the session that time and it was very very hard to find a job but I did find at least a five
06:29months work work you know after I graduated and I think part of it because the company that hired me had
06:40hired people from the same program to work in the lab and I was a lab technician so they offered me a
06:49temporary job which is added to my experience so I had internships and I had five years which helped me
06:58later to find a job in the lab but even within with the downturn the fact that they knew my school and
07:06that my program the one I finished they knew people local the local community the local businesses knew that
07:16program very well yeah and too bad that program doesn't exist so so yeah you know I think the same school
07:26have have have now have a program that is named different but close to it they reopened something close to it
07:34but but that program yet to probably gain any reputation hopefully it's a good one okay yeah
07:46you can use some of the education in your four-year schooling usually between you can you they will
07:54allow you to transfer especially if you are selective you might be able to transfer all to all two years
08:01to school but usually they will allow you to transfer like a year and a half but still a year and a half
08:11that's not bad so these are the benefits of graduating from an associate degree level school and let's look here
08:24about uh this is really not like i didn't like spend time looking on the internet these are information from
08:32the internet so like it's not but i kind of just glancing on it i know from that those numbers are right
08:41but these are like the top top degrees that you can find in your local school in every almost every
08:51college you know or every decent-sized city in north america and canada you know maybe the first one
09:03is not a common one you know but but the the radiation therapist but it but in the big city you'll find those
09:18degrees but dental hygienists for example any decent size city probably have one or two schools that are
09:26they offer this respiratory therapy i remember i wanted to be a respiratory therapist but at that time
09:36the waiting list was high so i i didn't even apply you know too bad i i wish i did and a friend of mine
09:45who later graduated with me in the same the same graduate graduated the same day she was in in the program
09:56and right away she found a job and she literally while i was linguing in debt she she start to she probably
10:09paid her student loan in one or two years and she started her life in the middle class after that and
10:17these of course she you know those are numbers only when you are like uh uh average numbers they are not
10:26your starting wage but but imagine after five years you make eighty thousand with two year degree
10:33you know and of course those wages are not they differ from state to state as well but uh but like if you
10:43are in the midwest for example eighty thousand probably this what reflect you know eighty thousand is
10:51is a good salary where you can live comfortably and save yourself and your family and your family from poverty
11:00uh uh uh radiation uh radiology uh m m mri uh technology these are actually they've they also exist they've
11:19many many community colleges around the country teach them uh usually they however i want to emphasize
11:26they are long programs but you know but you still make a very decent living doing it and if you take the mri you
11:39will make actually significant more than the average radiologist but usually that's a year on top of
11:47being a normal radiologist so just in case i just want to emphasize this uh associate uh nursing of
11:56course everybody know nurses make uh make uh around you know they start making this is basically a starting
12:02wage making around uh you know making around this amount so let's uh it for individual i have a small degree in
12:18i.t and usually to be honest um it differ in it if you are like application developer with the experience you
12:28probably will make more but if you are an application developer who started uh especially now with how
12:36competitive that field is usually you start with very very little and with uh and a lot of uncertainty but
12:46uh the information technology programs usually have different fields and usually like uh uh system
12:55administrators and uh and uh servers and uh what they call it network administration and uh you know help desk
13:10usually they are the other one who who get the 40 to 50 a year and these are usually after those individual
13:22pay as their company so but it's not no it's not the greatest uh pay but it is you know a pay that uh
13:36you know definitely better than working for for nothing and usually information technology field especially
13:47yeah especially not you know network administration and they are not really hard to enter to to do
13:57uh the finishing rate is like you don't see a lot of people dropping out of those programs
14:02and of course there's more you can be a mechanic if you want to be a welder there is a lot more and you
14:09may probably make more than information technology but so i these are we just want to talk about the pay
14:16here he's not we are not like ranking them from top to bottom but this is the idea is that you definitely
14:24let's say you work at a fast food if you just about to finish high school you know maybe you work in a
14:35factory i remember i worked in factories for 12 years uh i never unless you work in a union old-fashioned
14:44factory that take care of their employees you will be making like equivalent of maybe 20 well with
14:54with today's money maybe you'll maybe making like 20 bucks an hour in the midwest or something like that
15:00which is i guess that's 40 000 a year but but but that is just but you are talking about your this is
15:09your starting wage where in a factory that will be your your main wage that is not gonna grow
15:18every time it grows the economy will be like inflation will come and cut it okay however we have to talk
15:26about another thing that you you need to consider when you're trying to seek training and this apply for
15:36if you want to do a two-year or more uh pay or potential pay is not everything
15:49if you invest your time in a degree make sure you combine what you like with a job market
15:59around you and your long-term dreams you'll and this is something we nobody think about your long-term
16:06dreams let's say you don't want to live in the area where you live in
16:12and you want to move to the coast let's say
16:20if your degree let's say information technology and you want to go live in california you know maybe
16:30perhaps perhaps perhaps may or may not be a good thing to go there you know maybe you'll be out
16:37completed in the job market maybe it will be the opposite where you go so think of the long term if
16:46you want to live somewhere else if you want to live in a small town for example you want a job that you can
16:54find in a small town the last thing you want is to commute two hours every day to for a job you know
17:01because eventually that is financial burden because that you have to run through cars and gas and all
17:10this just to get to a job so these things that we don't think about but it's a good idea to think about it
17:19and i wish i thought about the long-term dream when i did my training for example
17:30so i'm gonna answer a few other questions and which help us narrow our choices
17:39what you like to do and do you have a vision and these questions may be broad and many of us i
17:51certainly didn't have didn't know what i wanted to do and i didn't have a vision you know and i was when
18:03i went to training first time i was already 25 so so i didn't have a vision i didn't have i just wanted
18:16something better than my situation and i'm glad i did it because the company i worked for is no longer
18:24exist i would have you know so so like i would have lost my job anyway i should have you should so you
18:32should not like just think of your current situation now should think of your situation or how it may
18:38change and education definitely is a tool to help you find a better job or adapt to your your financial
18:50situation what subject you are good at in school and this is something actually i did ask myself a
18:59question like that when i was 25 as i said i started taking classes not knowing what i want to do
19:08but i i knew i didn't want to be where i am at
19:14so i realized that i was good at math surprisingly and science and stuff like that but i was a little bit
19:24older so i didn't want to go like to a like a big college and spend years i used to think at that time
19:32which was foolish but i used to think that i was old but nevertheless and of course i had the uncertainty
19:40that what if something happened will i be able to finish or get a piece of paper or not but i did ask
19:48myself a question and that's what it drove me into becoming a a lab person eventually
19:59what environment you like to to be in and also this is another question i asked myself i thought
20:05was a great question i asked myself by accident but it was a great question because i didn't want i
20:12i didn't have i don't have what we call them like i'm not a slick individual i don't have like people skills and
20:20i don't enjoy like being intimate with people and stuff like that i always i always like to work by myself
20:29and i thought to myself you know what i was a quality control at that time in the fact that i worked in
20:35and i thought to myself you know what maybe if i did
20:38the school i am attending offer this laboratory science the technology program that is very very
20:47famous actually it was very famous how hard it was because of the teachers they but they were actually
20:55good teachers uh but uh but uh and i thought to myself oh you know what maybe i'll be like a quality
21:03control lab technician and indeed i end up i worked in many lab jobs but the quality control lab is
21:11something i did maybe the most and so i in many ways i envisioned what's gonna happen and uh and i kind of
21:22chose uh uh something that uh
