00:11commercial flight, but it wasn't. It was a spy mission loaded with secret equipment to track

00:16every move of the Soviet military at a time when the Cold War was at its peak. When the flight

00:20entered Soviet airspace, radars immediately locked onto it. Two MiG-17 fighters were scrambled,

00:26tearing through the sky with orders to intercept. The MiG-17 fighters opened fire, unleashing a

00:31deadly burst that ripped through the aircraft. All 17 crew members lost their lives in the crash,

00:37and the Soviets, furious over what they saw as a bold spying mission, refused to return even their

00:42dead bodies. Initially, the U.S. claimed the aircraft was a weather plane that had strayed off course,

00:48but eventually they acknowledged the truth. This only fueled the USSR's anger, further escalating

00:53Cold War tensions. Decades later, in 1991, Russia returned some of the crew's remains.
