00:00CBS Sports Injury Analyst Marty Jaramillo and Marty, I don't want to speculate with what we saw on the floor in that Celtics next game, but you watched Jason Tatum go down on a non-contact injury. He instantly grabbed his leg in obvious pain and obviously being extremely upset with what was going on. From you watching the game and seeing Tatum's reaction, what did that tell you?
00:25Well, Kiana, a devastating blow indeed for not only Jason Tatum, his family, and the Celtics and Celtics fans everywhere. But the replays sometimes don't lie. It appears that Jason Tatum sustained a right Achilles tear, a classic and textbook non-contact injury.
00:44As he stepped back to push off for a loose ball, the stepping back maximizes the tension on the Achilles, and sometimes it's overloaded and sometimes it's tear torn.
00:56And that said, of course, all this will be confirmed tomorrow by MRI, fingers crossed.
01:02But unfortunately, the replay does show the potential for that Achilles tear.
01:07Now, let's say it is in fact confirmed through an MRI that he did suffer an Achilles tear.
01:13I mean, obviously, you want to see Jason Tatum on the floor, and obviously, if that is the case, it will not be this series.
01:18It will not be this postseason.
01:19But when could Celtics fans realistically expect to see him back on the floor, considering this is happening now?
01:25We are midway through May.
01:27You know, Kiana, I watched the entire game.
01:30My son Austin just lives and breathes the New York Knicks, and I used to be on the medical staff of the Knicks.
01:34So once a Knick, always a Knick.
01:36That said, you want the best on the floor.
01:38If you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best.
01:40And as you saw how Jason was playing, he was just taking it to the next level.
01:43An impressive game indeed.
01:45But we are, like you said, in May.
01:48On average, rehab post-surgery is between six and nine months, sometimes a little longer, sometimes a little less, depending on the procedure that's used.
01:56Now, at best, he would be on the court by next March or April with that six to nine months time frame.
02:05But once again, once you are clear to play, then you have to ramp up your minutes and ramp up your conditioning.
02:12So I do suspect, in the event that he's torn, that he would miss the entire 26th season.
02:17That's the unfortunate news there.
02:20That said, he's still young.
02:21He's still very effective and very healthy young man and a great, great athlete.
02:25I fully expect him a year away from basketball.
02:28We've talked about this before.
02:29There's nothing short of an opportunity.
02:31Get his body ready.
02:32Get his mind back.
02:34I think he'll be okay.
02:36So very productive post-surgery in the event that is confirmed.
02:39Yeah, absolutely.
02:40I mean, a tough blow regardless.
02:42Whether you are a Celtics fan or an NBA fan in general, you want to see the best on the field.
02:47And wishing the best for Jason Tatum after that injury.
02:50As always, Marty, we appreciate you stopping by and dropping off some insight for us.
02:54Thank you so much.
02:55And Marty said he had a fantastic night before going down with that apparent right leg injury.
03:02Take a look at the most career playoff games with 40 or more points in Celtics history.
03:06Well, on Monday, coming off a 42-point performance.
03:10And the Celtics lost before exiting the game, marking his fifth 40-plus-point playoff performance.
03:17And could that be the last that we see at least this postseason?
03:22That is yet TBD.
03:23But we will be sure to keep you updated right here on CBS Sports HQ.
