00:02For centuries, high in the rugged, snow-capped Pyrenees mountains that divide France and Spain,

00:10a majestic breed quietly earned its reputation as one of the world's most loyal and powerful

00:15livestock guardians, the Great Pyrenees. The history of the Great Pyrenees dates back

00:20thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that dogs resembling the breed existed

00:26as far back as 1000 BC, these early dogs likely accompanied nomadic shepherds and herders,

00:32offering protection from predators like wolves and bears in the harsh mountain terrain.

00:37Their thick, weather-resistant coats and strong, muscular builds made them perfectly suited to

00:42the demanding climate of the region. Over time, these dogs became essential to rural mountain life,

00:49particularly in the Pyrenees. They didn't herd sheep, they guarded them. Working mostly at night,

00:55they'd blend in with their flocks, ever watchful, ready to spring into action at the slightest threat.

01:24society, many of these dogs continued to serve in their traditional role, on mountain slopes,

01:29faithfully protecting sheep and goats. The breed made its way to North America in the 1800s,

01:35where it quickly found similar use among ranchers and farmers. In the United States and Canada,

01:41they proved just as effective against coyotes and other predators, maintaining their centuries-old role

01:46as guardians. Today, the Great Pyrenees is known for its gentle temperament, deep loyalty,

01:52and imposing presence. Despite their size and strength, they are calm and affectionate with

01:58family, especially children. Their protective instincts are still strong, and while they're often

02:04seen as family pets now, many still work on farms and ranches across the world. Though times have changed,

02:11the noble spirit of the Great Pyrenees has remained the same, a loyal protector, a mountain seninal,

02:16and a gentle giant with a history as rich and enduring as the peaks from which it came.
