Japanese automaker Nissan Motor is set to cut over 10,000 more jobs globally, bringing the total number of layoffs announced earlier to around 20,000 or 15% of its workforce, NHK reported on Monday (May 12).

00:08bringing the total number of layoffs announced earlier to around 20,000 or 15% of its workforce.
00:14NHK reported that Nissan aims to make its business leaner and more resilient,
00:20particularly after underperforming in its largest market in the United States,
00:24where it struggled due to a lack of hybrid models and an aging vehicle lineup.
00:29Nissan warned last month that it would likely register a record net loss of up to 750 billion yen
00:35for the financial year ending in March, citing impairment charges.
00:40Nissan is Japan's third-largest automaker.
00:43The company is expected to officially release its full-year results on Tuesday,
00:48but has so far declined to comment on the job cut report.
00:51In China, Nissan has also faced a sharp sales decline,
00:55and it plans to launch around 10 new models in the coming years.
