00:00Phil Simmons, the dependable West Indies opener, stitched together a masterclass in the third
00:05ODI against South Africa at Port of Spain in the 1992-93 series.
00:10Come at the crease and clinical with the bat, Phil Simmons carved out a sublime 104 runs
00:15of 139 deliveries, peppered with ten elegant boundaries and two towering sixes that sailed
00:22into the stands.
00:23This was not just any 100, it was his second of the series, having already dazzled fans
00:28with a polished turn in the opening ODI at Kingston.
00:31Phil Simmons was not in a rush.
00:33He built his innings brick by brick, reading the ballers like a seasoned pro, punishing anything
00:38loose and respecting the good deliveries.
00:40His knock not only studied the shape but also set the perfect tone for the comfortable chase.
00:46The West Indies riding on the Phil Simmons' class, chased down the target with each sealing
00:50a convincing seven-wicket victory.
00:53That inning was more than just numbers, it was pure cricketing rhythm, a blend of timing,
00:58temperament and touch.
00:59So sit back, rewind the tape in your mind and relive the grace of Phil Simmons in full
01:04Caribbean flow.
01:05And the new batsman, there he is, the hero from Sabina Park last Tuesday, also from Trinidad.
01:11He made 122 in that first one day international and he's come in to face the second ball of
01:17the innings to join.
01:19Well, the doctor simply couldn't have ordered a better start for South Africa.
01:24And here's Pringle to Simmons.
01:26Well, I don't think South Africa had a right to expect two in two, did they?
01:36Not a bad delivery mind you.
01:37It got up a little bit on this very flat wicket.
01:49Needed a bit more direction to it and it would have posed something of a problem.
01:55First ball to the new batsman.
02:02The big appeal that a wide has been called.
02:06Well, the South Africans can't believe it.
02:09I'm sure from their gesture that Simmons undoubtedly touched that one, but umpire Cumberbatch had no
02:17doubt whatever that that was a wide.
02:20This will be very interesting indeed.
02:24And I think it brushed his shirt as it went through.
02:28There was no bat or glove anywhere near that one.
02:31They heard the noise and they went up for it.
02:34But, uh, extraordinary that it should be called a wide when it certainly wasn't above shoulder height
02:40and it touched his body.
02:43It's one of those ones, one wonders what the umpire saw.
02:47The replay certainly indicated that it didn't hit bat.
02:55Well, that's the first run of the innings.
02:57Is it going over?
02:58No.
02:59Well stopped.
03:00Simmons hit that very hard indeed.
03:02The shiny ball making it difficult to stop at that pace by Bosch down at third man.
03:10That went very, very quickly.
03:17They nearly lost it.
03:19Very forceful players, Phil Simmons.
03:24South Africans will remember the five huge sixes he hit.
03:31Lovely and colourful.
03:33But I guess if you're sitting immediately behind those two, your view may not be particularly good.
03:39His first game in the West Indies, only his second game for South Africa.
03:44In fact, he only bowled two overs.
03:48Oh, my goodness me.
03:49That was not the most judicious of strokes by Simmons.
03:52He could so easily have got an edge there.
03:55We saw him in the last over force one down to third man off the...
04:04Over the edge again.
04:08It bounced in front of vessels.
04:10He couldn't stop that.
04:11It bounced awkwardly for him and away it went for four.
04:14But again, the bats, the bowler beating the bat, finding the edge.
04:20And a good delivery by Bosch.
04:22And another stroke of good fortune for the West Indian batsmen.
04:26Again, that not carrying.
04:28The last over we saw one that didn't carry two vessels.
04:33That was in fact a no ball.
04:34You can see umpire Lloyd Barker signalling there, so...
04:37And down the next side.
04:44Well, take that.
04:51Simmons relieving his feelings, hitting there through the line.
04:55And that was a most handsome stroke.
04:59If you give Simmons any width at all, he's very severe.
05:06And that was beautifully struck through the covers for four.
05:10What a ball strong.
05:12Well, Pringle gave that appeal everything.
05:22Simmons is coming forward.
05:24Saw him indicating there to the umpire with his right hand.
05:28Is that going down the next side?
05:30I'm afraid it was Merrick.
05:32It's a good delivery.
05:33Too good because it just cuts back too much.
05:36So for pad towards spine leg, they'll count.
05:46Against the extras his leg dies.
05:48And they add to the West Indian score.
05:50I suppose you could say this is a bad ball.
05:56Possibly the first really bad ball.
05:58All by the South African in this innings.
06:02Slanting down the leg side.
06:04Four runs to the West Indies.
06:10And that's well struck.
06:12Snell drifting down the leg side again.
06:14And Simmons picked it up beautifully for four.
06:16The second really bad ball by Snell.
06:30But the first scoring stroke of the batter of Snell.
06:34And the previous they had two overs to both maintenance.
06:38That's the first scoring stroke of Smith's now.
06:48Position out there, the sweeper, the mammoth deep cover.
06:51Which has proved so crucial.
06:54And that was all brute force from Philip Simmons.
07:06Nothing subtle about that.
07:08He just opened his shoulders and hammered it down the ground.
07:12No timing, but plenty of strength.
07:15Yes, this is one that he sort of, he hit.
07:18And the South African is probably a strong guy.
07:21And if he missed hits.
07:22This bat is slightly heavy too, I suppose.
07:24And it helps him.
07:25And it just motors a lot down to the boundary there.
07:29A hundred balls.
07:30So the second has come off 86 deliveries.
07:39That says 50.
07:40And the crowd here will rise to Philip Simmons.
07:43It's the second half century to have seen from the Trinidadian batsmen.
07:47On their home ground here in successive days.
07:50Philip Simmons.
07:51He's taken 103 balls to get there.
07:54And he's hit four fours.
07:56And the West Indies at the end of 31 overs are 102 for two.
08:09He's chopped it down to third man.
08:11That's an edge, but he deliberately made room for himself to play the cut shot.
08:15He knew that there was no danger if he did edge it.
08:16And he did.
08:17But it traveled away very quickly through the vacant steps.
08:18Four more runs.
08:19Yes, this one was quite wide.
08:20And he got a thick edge.
08:21Just wide of the wicket keeper.
08:22And the third man just couldn't get it.
08:23It was too fine for him.
08:24Not a fourth of Simmons.
08:25Score now 109 for two.
08:26But he can't get onto that one.
08:27That's hammered away by Simmons.
08:28So two successive fours and there was no edge about that.
08:33That was a cracking spare cut actually.
08:34He hit that with quite a lot of force.
08:35There it was.
08:36And not a man moves.
08:37That's not a fourth of Simmons.
08:38That's not a fourth of Simmons.
08:39Score now 109 for two.
08:40But he can't get onto that one.
08:41That's hammered away by Simmons.
08:42So two successive fours and there was no edge about that.
08:43That was a cracking spare cut actually.
08:44He hit that with quite a lot of force.
08:58There it was.
08:59And not a man moves with that.
09:04Beautiful shot there if I film Simmons.
09:06He's beginning to motor now.
09:07He's getting the better of the South African Bowlers.
09:15Well we haven't had the conch shell blowing with any frequency today until now.
09:22We had it all yesterday of course when Lara was in form.
09:25And that's gone a long way.
09:26That's a mighty hit by Simmons.
09:28That's one for six.
09:29Yeah.
09:30Out of one that Simmons made up his mind.
09:31He was going to hit that.
09:32Hit it hard.
09:33The doctor came on his pads and he picked it up easily over mid wicket for four.
09:35This was a beautiful shot.
09:36Here in the meat of the bat.
09:37And he didn't even bother to run.
09:38He just watched it disappear into the crowd.
09:41Six glorious runs.
09:42Six glorious runs for Simmons.
09:44Weston is now motoring 219 for two.
09:45That's four more.
09:4621 off the over.
09:47That's four more.
09:4821 off the over.
09:49Three fours and a six for Philip Simmons.
09:50Three fours and a six for Philip Simmons.
09:51That's four more.
09:5221 off the over.
09:53Three fours and a six for Philip Simmons.
09:54That's four more.
09:5521 off the over.
09:56Three fours and a six for Philip Simmons.
09:57The Queen's Park over is jumping.
09:59And the West Indies are a hundred and thirteen.
10:0023 for two.
10:01And the West Indies are a hundred and thirteen.
10:0222 for two.
10:04That's four more.
10:0521 off the over.
10:06Three fours and a six for Philip Simmons.
10:07The Queen's Park Oval is jumping.
10:12And the West Indies are a hundred and thirteen.
10:1421 off the over, three fours and a six for Philip Simmons.
10:21The Queen's Park oval is jumping, and the West Indies are 123 for 2 at the end of the 32nd over.
10:36Well there it goes, and that's another marvellous stroke.
10:39Going away there, over the top of extra cover for six.
10:43And he hit it so easily, it was just like Schelling Bees.
10:47The score now, 130 for two.
10:58A long way over the extra cover boundary.
11:08Oh, a marvellous stroke, that's going away for four.
11:11And Schell's not going to stop that. The crowd are absolutely loving it. Look at them.
11:16Isn't that marvellous? Pure, unadulterated Caribbean joy.
11:22And Simmons has broken his bat.
11:25I think in fact it's the second bat he's broken in this innings.
11:28I don't think the manufacturers would be too unhappy though, Henry.
11:33He's showing...
11:34Well, just with those figures, eight fours and two sixes, and just 114 balls, they certainly won't.
11:40Because whoever makes his bat, puts a lot of middle into it.
11:46Lovely stroke, wasn't it?
11:49Here is the great man.
11:54Who I say, I thought Richardson seemed about to appeal for a catch behind.
12:06I think it was wishful thinking, but certainly Simmons played at that and missed.
12:09Anything close to the edge of the bat.
12:13And of course...
12:15And he'll get the two to carry into 99 here.
12:35So Philip Simmons just a single away now.
12:37And all he has to do is push the ball down and run.
12:42Deppler Vessels is not putting any pressure on him because he's 99.
12:48He's had three one-day international sentries before this one.
12:55And the party has started in anticipation of the 100.
12:59Of the 100.
13:05And he's got it.
13:06He's got it with a four off the legs.
13:09Beautifully timed.
13:10And Philip Simmons gets another 100.
13:13And the crowd can't restrain itself.
13:23Another marvellous batting performance.
13:26And they really are celebrating.
13:29A local man.
13:35And just a touch of their hero.
13:38Will keep them happy for weeks.
13:40Here's how he got his 100.
13:42Well timed, a boundary.
13:45In fact, his tenth four.
13:47That stroke to carry Philip Simmons from 99 to 103.
13:50135 balls to get there.
13:53And he needed only 32 balls to get.
13:56Oh, the cup.
14:05Mighty hit.
14:06But a catch up there.
14:07Taken by Hansikornia.
14:09And Philip Simmons rather an anti-climax.
14:13Caught in the deep.
14:15With the West Indies just eight runs away from their target.
14:19Simmons out for 103.
14:24Caught in the deep.
14:26Off to Snell.
14:27And Snell's final over.
14:29Going for yet another six.
14:32Well there's always the temptation to end it in glory and style.
14:36And a huge six and a four maybe would have done the trick.
14:40But unfortunately he didn't quite get hold of this one.
14:43As he has some others.
14:45And Hansikornia was nicely positioned to take the catch.
14:50So Simmons is fourth one day century.
14:55Out for 103.
14:56And the West Indies are 182 for three.
14:59Needing 100.
15:00Phil Simmons, the explosive all-runner from Trinidad, was a cricketer whose fiery talent often outshone the stats on paper.
15:07Though his test record might not tell the full story.
15:11Those who watched him knew he brought much more to the table.
15:14A natural athlete with gifts in many sports.
15:17It was cricket that captured his heart and soon.
15:20He found himself donning the colors of East Zone and later the West Indies.
15:24His long test century came at the mighty Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 1992-93 series.
15:29A knock full of grit against a top-class Australian attack.
15:34In his 26 test matches, mostly as an opener, he added four centuries but his true spark was often seen in the shorter format.
15:42Phil Simmons truly came alive in one-day international.
15:45From his debut in the 1987 World Cup to his last ODI in 1999, he wore the maroon cap in 143 matches.
15:52He got off to a promising start in 1987 World Cup with a fighting knock of 50 runs against Pakistan and then 89 against Sri Lanka.
16:02By the 1992 World Cup, he raised the bar, smashing a thrilling 110 runs against Sri Lanka.
16:08In 1993, Phil Simmons lit up Sharjah with the bat during the Champions Trophy Tri-Series.
16:12He piled on 330 runs with three stylish 50s and walked away with the Player of the Series award.
16:20But cricket-like life has its ups and downs.
16:23The 1995-96 Australian Tri-Series was a quiet face for Phil Simmons and he missed out on the 1996 World Cup.
16:31However, the selectors brought him back for the 1999 Cricket World Cup, where he played his last ODI fittingly against mighty Australia at Old Trafford.
16:39Moreover, county cricket saw Phil Simmons at his glorious best.
16:44On debut for Leicestershire in 1996, he smashed the jaw-dropping 261 runs against Northampton Shire, a knock loaded with 34 fours and four sixes.
16:54That same season, he carried Leicestershire to a historic county championship title, scoring 1,244 runs, grabbing 56 wickets and pouching 35 slip catches with his massive hands.
17:06For his all-round brilliance, he was named a Wisdom Cricketer of the Year in 1997.
17:12Two years later, he led the team to another county championship win, stepping in as captain with authority and heart.
17:19Though a medium pacer by label Phil Simmons often bowled with sharp pace, in one memorable encounter he even outpaced Devon Malcolm, one of the England's quickest ballers.
17:28A rare feat for any seamer, but his career nearly ended before it took off.
17:34In 1998, during a tour match in England, a vicious bouncer from David Lawrence struck him on the head in a poor light.
17:41His heart stopped, an emergency surgery was needed to save his life.
17:45Miraculously, he recovered fully and returned stronger.
17:47After retiring Phil Simmons' turning to coach, his first major role was with Zimbabwe, but it proved to be a rough side and ended in 2005 under turbulent circumstances.
17:58Yet Phil Simmons bounced back once more in 2007.
18:02He became the head coach of Ireland.
18:04Under his guidance, Ireland gets stronger and bolder on the global stage.
18:07By the time his career days were over, Phil Simmons had quietly built an outstanding first-class record, 11,682 runs at an average of 35.61, including 2400s and 6550s.
18:23With the ball, he claimed 214 wickets at 28.68.
18:27Five of those were five wicket hauls.
18:29Phil Simmons was not just a cricketer, he was a fighter, a game-changer and a Caribbean spirit who never gave less than everything.
