Pope Leo XIV, history’s first North American pope, said Friday that his election was both a cross and a blessing as he celebrated his first Mass in Sistine Chapel.

00:24you have called me to carry that cross

00:29and to be blessed with that mission.

00:32And I know I can rely on each and every one of you

00:34to walk with me as we continue,

00:38as a church, as a community of friends of Jesus,

00:42as believers, to announce the good news,

00:45to announce the gospel.

00:46This is, first of all, for me,

00:55as the successor of Peter,

00:56when I started my mission

01:01of the Church of the Church in Rome,

01:04called to preside in the charity

01:07the Church of the universe,
