Brisbane artist Julie Fragar wins for portrait of Justene Williams

Brisbane artist Julie Fragar has won this year's Archibald prize for her portrait of her friend and fellow artist Justene Williams. The work titled 'flagship mother multiverse' will receive 100,000 dollars in prize money.

00:00Julie Frager's portrait of her friend and fellow artist, Justine Williams, is the winner of this year's Archibald Prize.

00:10The portrait depicts Williams suspended in the air in a cosmic scene wearing costumes and surrounded by props and sculptures from her studio.

00:19The artist says that she was inspired to depict her friend as a powerful and creative figure.

00:25Both artists are based in Brisbane and they say that it's a win for the local scene.

00:30What happens in Brisbane is brilliant. There's so many great artists and lots of great things happening, so we're thrilled to be a part of this.

00:37What we know is basically it can be a fairly Sydney-oriented prize, obviously, at the Archibald New South Wales,

00:45but we're very grateful to have that work that's being done in Queensland acknowledged.

00:50Both of the Wynn and Sulman Prizes for genre and landscape painting this year were awarded to artists inspired by the sky.

00:58Sydney-based artist Jude Ray, who took home the Wynn Prize, says that the sky is a unifying figure

01:05and it inspires people to focus on things bigger than their own individual problems.

01:10It's so elusive. It's very, very, you can't photograph it, but I wanted to try and catch something.

01:20The works will be on display here at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney until the end of August

01:25before they undertake a regional tour through Victoria and New South Wales.
