Hello, everybody, and welcome to a special notebook.
00:03
Well, it's a feature, actually, on how to make a life-size F1 car out of Lego bricks.
00:08
Come on, little Ted.
00:10
Last year, Formula One and the Lego Group announced their new partnership for 2025
00:14
with a wild idea planned.
00:16
Build all 10 F1 team cars out of these tiny colored bricks
00:20
and make them fully drivable at this weekend's Miami Grand Prix.
00:25
And to see exactly how that's done,
00:26
I was invited to the factory where they're building these cars,
00:29
in Kladno, the Czech Republic,
00:31
to see how a brilliant plan like this actually comes to life.
00:34
As a kid, like many children, I used to make pretty basic stuff
00:37
out of these little colorful plastic bricks,
00:39
helicopters, planes, that kind of thing.
00:41
But this is on another level.
00:44
10 teams, 10 cars, and such detail.
00:48
So we're used to making vehicles,
00:51
drivable vehicles out of Lego bricks.
00:53
This one was really challenging because it involved 10 cars.
00:55
So that was a great challenge,
00:57
conceptualizing, designing, and building these cars took about 22,000 hours.
01:02
I think we handle it well.
01:04
And over 400,000 colored bricks,
01:06
which are made in Lego factories around the world.
01:09
They start as melted plastic pellets.
01:11
They're injected into molds.
01:12
Once they've cooled, they're trimmed, tested, boxed up,
01:16
and sent off to factories like this one for big build projects.
01:19
We get the bricks delivered to the factory,
01:21
and the builders assemble them here on the table,
01:23
put them together here.
01:25
This is the design that comes from our department,
01:28
the design department,
01:29
and they go layer by layer,
01:31
layering bricks one layer on top of each other.
01:34
It's like when you're building a house.
01:36
To achieve a real sturdiness,
01:37
every brick is glued to the other one.
01:40
You don't want the bricks to come apart for sure.
01:43
If we start this project,
01:46
you need some steel structure inside
01:48
because you need the rigid model.
01:50
And so you just pick up all of these things,
01:52
a rear wing or a bodywork or an engine cover,
01:54
and it just slots on to here, is that right?
01:57
You move with the crane or the hand
01:59
and move on these the screws.
02:02
Nice bit of kit.
02:03
And tell us about actually
02:04
how you're going to sit the drivers down in the cockpit.
02:06
This is movable.
02:07
So you need to cater for Yuki Tsunoda
02:10
and then Ollie Behrman at the same time.
02:12
Yeah.
02:12
You've thought of everything, Martin.
02:14
Brilliant.
02:14
If we want to drive,
02:15
we need some electro-engine.
02:18
And this electro-engine will be here.
02:21
This electro-engine will be in one box
02:24
with the differential and with gearbox.
02:27
You had to work quickly or...?
02:29
Time was our enemy.
02:30
1,000 kilos Lego bricks.
02:32
So fast forward a few thousand work hours
02:35
and it's time to see these big builds come to life.
02:42
Oh, wow.
02:43
Well, here they are, two of them absolutely ready.
02:46
A Mercedes and a Ferrari.
02:48
They look fantastic.
02:49
Actually, they look about the right size,
02:51
even though they've got two drivers.
02:52
And the attention to detail is just brilliant.
02:55
Look at the wheel covers here, the front wing.
02:57
The colors are perfect.
02:58
The Ferrari.
02:59
This looks fantastic.
03:01
How they've managed to fashion curved surfaces
03:04
out of square plastic bricks is incredible.
03:06
All the sponsors' logos are spot-on.
03:09
Oh, strong, too.
03:10
Love it.
03:11
Now, these do actually go.
03:12
So I wonder if I could take it for a cheeky spin.
03:16
All right.
03:17
And we're off.
03:19
That's a bit quieter than a normal F1 car.
03:21
Whoo-hoo-hoo.
03:23
Whoa-hey.
03:25
Look, Mum.
03:26
I'm driving a Lego car.
03:28
Ah, Lewis is going to love this.
03:30
And stop.
03:32
Well, that was tremendous.
03:34
Next stop, Miami, where it's lights out and away Lego.
03:37
Ooh, I wondered if you'd managed to get that one in.
03:42
Lego Wacky Races update.
03:45
And judging by the looks on some of these drivers' faces,
03:49
there are a few that have regressed.
03:50
Some by 10 years.
03:53
Others by 30 or so.
03:54
But I'm glad they've glued those together.
03:58
I hope they've glued them together well.
04:00
Otherwise, there's going to be a fair few thousand Lego bricks
04:03
on that greasy track.
04:05
Right, let's see what Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen
04:08
made of their fun out there.
04:11
That was the most fun drivers parade we've ever had.
04:15
Some dirty driving from this one here.
04:17
They're stealing the wall.
04:18
Yeah.
04:19
The dirty boys are stealing the wall back there.
04:21
That was very fun.
04:22
Yeah, I do think they have to sweep the track.
04:24
There's quite a bit of Lego debris now on the track.
04:27
A few cars collided along the way.
04:30
But, yeah, it's a bit different.
04:32
That's for sure.
04:32
It must have been a bit fun to go up kind of wheel-to-wheel as well.
04:35
Yeah, ours was a bit slow on top speed.
04:37
So we slowly dropped back throughout the lap.
04:39
But, yeah, I think it's more important
04:42
to actually clean the track at the moment.
04:46
There you go.
04:47
I knew it.
04:47
I knew this was going to happen.
04:49
You give them anything and they'll race it.
04:51
I think Ant's been at the sky.
04:52
Ant, you were keeping an eye on what was going out on track.
04:55
Was it getting dirty out there?
04:57
Yeah, I am at the sky.
04:58
I think this is a hit, so I'm definitely worthy of a sky pad.
05:01
And I saw this was the moment where it all started going wrong, really, wasn't it?
05:04
When George Russell took to the inside of Turn 3, surprising Charles Leclerc,
05:09
who was being a good boy up until that moment.
05:12
And then, obviously, down towards Turn 17, this is when it really started kicking off,
05:15
where you had a sandwich with Pierre Gasly, good friends of Charles Leclerc,
05:19
and George Russell in the middle and making contact.
05:22
And that's when I thought, oh, dear, look.
05:24
This is why we have a rule book in Formula 1,
05:27
because without it, stuff like this would happen.
05:31
Very good fun.
05:32
Definitely worthy of a sky pad here.
05:34
Well done, everyone.
05:34
Lego Formula 1 to bring smiles onto the F1 drivers' faces.
05:38
And ours, too.
