00:00A pleasant Tuesday afternoon to all. Yours truly, Denise Osorio here, and this is PTV News Now.

00:10Starting off our afternoon stories.

00:13It's official. Monday next week has been ruled by Executive Edict a special non-working holiday

00:19in line with the country's democratic tradition of Latin workers and students eligible to vote

00:24to take time off to head to their respective polling places

00:27and cast their votes for the next batch of national and local or grassroots leaders.

00:32Proclamation No. 878, inked and promulgated earlier today,

00:35orders all government and private officers and or firms, plus all private and public schools at all levels,

00:42to shut down for one day all activities and operations to allow workers and students

00:48enough time to cast their votes for the country's midterm elections.

00:52Today's announcement by Malacanang was due in large part to the prodding of poll body

00:56Commissioner George Garcia yesterday on the president to issue post-haste an official announcement

01:01for a holiday for workers and students to allow them ample time to vote on Monday,

01:07given the magnitude of its impact on the nation going forward.

01:11Unexpected turnout of 68 million voters will decide the fate for local and national leadership posts,

01:16totaling roughly 18,000 to include 12 senators of the republic,

01:21254 district representatives of the house, 63 party list legislators,

01:27to file video of candidates on the campaign trail.

01:30The campaign period for these wannabe officials has reached the homestretch

01:33where all candidates are feverishly paying house-to-house visits,

01:37pressing the flesh, kissing babies, and going all out to make their cases to voters and non-voters alike.

01:43Casting a vote during the country's electoral exercises has been nothing but inconvenient

01:51and hassle to the typical voter.

01:53Long lines, meticulous compliance to voting procedure,

01:57and extended waiting times reaching an hour or even longer.

02:00And then there's the aggravating factor or discomfort multiplier.

02:04The high heat and humidity right smack during the dog days of summer.

02:08And with a number of heat strokes having been reported since last month,

02:16Agri-Lis Solon Wilbert-Lee today reminded the poll body and the DOH to ensure deployment of first aid

02:22and or medical teams to as many polling places they could muster for the eventuality of voters fainting

02:28or falling ill because of the high heat and humidity.

02:31This call for DOH and common-like assistance comes at the heels of several advisories

02:36from the State Weather Forecasting Bureau Pag-Asa over the mercury surging to dangerous levels in recent days.

02:44The Agri-Party list mates also urge all voters to personally take precaution and protection

02:50by hydrating themselves, wearing light and comfortable clothes,

02:54and donning ball caps or hats or bringing their umbrellas for good measure.
