The late 1700s was a time of big change in Vietnam. The country was in turmoil, with the
00:05
common people suffering under the heavy burdens imposed by the ruling class. The oppressive taxes
00:11
and harsh treatment led to widespread discontent among the population. It was a time when people
00:16
challenged the rulers seeking justice and a better life. The peasants, who made up the majority of
00:21
the population, were particularly affected and began to rise up against their oppressors.
00:26
And rebellions happened all over. These uprisings were not isolated incidents but part of a larger
00:32
movement that spread across the country, fueled by the desire for change and the hope for a brighter
00:38
future. This was the time of the Taesun Wars, a series of conflicts that would reshape the nation's
00:44
history. The wars were marked by intense battles and strategic maneuvers, as different factions vied
00:50
for control. A time of fighting, changing dynasties and shifting alliances. The power struggles were
00:56
fierce, with each side seeking to establish its dominance and secure its place in the annals
01:01
of history. Vietnam being united and then divided as the tides of war ebbed and flowed. The country's
01:07
borders were redrawn multiple times reflecting the changing fortunes of the warring factions,
01:12
and important people who changed the country's future. Leaders emerged from the chaos, their actions
01:17
and decisions leaving a lasting impact on the nation's trajectory. From 1771 to 1802, Vietnam was at war.
01:24
These three decades were filled with relentless conflict as the struggle for power and control
01:29
raged on. These wars, called the Taesun Wars, changed Vietnam's government and society. The upheaval
01:36
brought about significant transformations, altering the way the country was governed and how its people
01:41
lived. Three brothers, Nguyen Ngoc, Nguyen Hue and Nguyen Lu, from the village of Taesun, started the
01:47
rebellion. Their leadership and vision galvanized the people, giving them hope and a sense of purpose.
01:53
They wanted to make life better for the people and free their land from bad rulers.
01:57
Their goal was to create a more just and equitable society where everyone could thrive.
02:02
They started a big fight that changed everything. The scale of the conflict was unprecedented.
02:07
With battles that would determine the future of the nation. The Taesun Wars weren't just a small
02:12
fight. They were a series of significant battles that involved large numbers of troops and complex
02:18
strategies. There were problems inside Vietnam and other countries got involved too.
02:22
The internal strife was compounded by foreign intervention, making the conflict even more
02:28
intricate and challenging. The brothers first fought the Nguyen lords in the south where they
02:32
faced fierce resistance but managed to gain significant ground. Then the Trin lords in the
02:37
north. This northern campaign was equally challenging as they had to overcome well-entrenched forces.
02:43
China, ruled by the Qing dynasty, also got involved, making the wars even more complicated.
02:49
The Qing dynasty's intervention added a new dimension to the conflict, as they sought to
02:54
influence the outcome in their favor. This time had a big effect on Vietnam. The consequences of
02:59
the Taesun Wars were far-reaching, affecting the country's political landscape and social fabric for
03:05
years to come. The brothers united the country for a short time, something that hadn't happened in a long
03:10
time. This brief period of unity was a remarkable achievement, given the long history of division and
03:16
conflict. They used clever ways of fighting, like using elephants in hiding to surprise the enemy.
03:22
Their innovative tactics and strategies played a crucial role in their successes on the battlefield.
03:27
The Taesun brothers inspired many Vietnamese people to fight for their freedom. Their legacy lives on,
03:33
as they are remembered as heroes who stood up against tyranny and fought for a better future for their
03:38
country. To understand the Taesun Wars, we need to look at what life was like back then. The 18th
03:46
century was a time of great turmoil and disparity in Vietnam, a land marked by stark contrasts and deep
03:53
divisions. In the 1700s, Vietnam was a land of big differences. The country was divided into two main
04:00
regions, each ruled by powerful families who controlled vast territories and resources. The rich rulers,
04:06
the Nguyen lords in the south and the Trin lords in the north, lived very well. They enjoyed luxurious
04:12
lifestyles with grand palaces, fine clothing, and abundant food, all while the common people struggled to
04:18
survive. But the farmers had to pay lots of taxes and were treated badly. They worked tirelessly in the
04:24
rice fields, yet their hard-earned produce was heavily taxed, leaving them with barely enough to feed their
04:29
families. The farms, especially in the Mekong Delta, were hurt by the fighting between the lords. The
04:35
constant battles devastated the land, destroying crops and making it difficult for farmers to maintain their
04:41
livelihoods. This caused many people to lose their homes, not have enough food, and be very poor. Families were
04:48
displaced, wandering the countryside in search of safety and sustenance, often finding none. The rich rulers
04:54
didn't care about the problems of the common people. They continued to indulge in their opulent lifestyles, turning a
05:00
blind eye to the suffering around them. They lived in luxury while everyone else suffered. Their grand
05:06
parties and celebrations were a stark contrast to the daily struggles of the peasants. Things were made
05:11
worse by corrupt officials. These officials exploited their positions for personal gain, demanding bribes and
05:18
further oppressing the already-burdened populace. They took bribes, and it was hard for regular people to get
05:24
fair treatment. Justice was a commodity that only the wealthy could afford, leaving the common people
05:30
feeling helpless and disenfranchised. This made people angry and feel like the rulers didn't care
05:35
about them. The widespread discontent and frustration among the peasants began to boil over, leading to
05:41
increased unrest and calls for change. This is when the Taesun brothers started their rebellion. They saw the
05:47
suffering of the people and decided to take action, rallying the oppressed to rise against their
05:52
tyrannical rulers. They came from regular families and saw the problems of the people. Their humble
05:58
origins gave them a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the common people's struggles.
06:04
They used the people's anger to start a movement for change. The Taesun brothers' rebellion was fueled by
06:09
the collective anger and desperation of the oppressed, marking the beginning of a significant upheaval in
06:15
Vietnam's history. The Taesun brothers weren't born rich or powerful. They came from a regular family
06:24
in Taesun village. This area was known for its independent people who didn't like being ruled by
06:29
others. This helped shape who they became. The brothers grew up witnessing the struggles and
06:34
resilience of their community. Nguyen Ngoc, the oldest, was a smart businessman. He traveled all over
06:40
Vietnam and saw the problems of the poor. His travels opened his eyes to the widespread suffering and
06:46
injustices faced by the common people. He was smart and good at getting people to follow him which helped
06:52
him start the rebellion. His charisma and leadership skills were crucial in rallying support. Nguyen Hue,
06:58
the middle brother, was a great military leader. He was brave and smart in battle, and his soldiers
07:05
respected him. His tactical genius and fearlessness on the battlefield earned him the unwavering
07:10
loyalty of his troops. His enemies were afraid of him. His reputation as a formidable commander spread
07:15
far and wide, striking fear into the hearts of his adversaries. He helped the Taesun win many battles.
07:21
His strategic brilliance was instrumental in securing numerous victories for the Taesun forces.
07:27
Nguyen Lu, the youngest, was known for being religious and good at running a government. He wasn't a great
07:32
fighter like his brothers, but he helped run the areas they controlled. His administrative skills ensured that
07:38
the regions under their control were well-managed and prosperous. Together the brothers were a strong
07:43
team. Their combined talents and shared vision made them a formidable force. They had different skills,
07:49
and they used the people's unhappiness to start a big rebellion. Their ability to harness the
07:54
discontent of the masses and channel it into a powerful movement was key to their success.
08:00
The Taesun Rebellion started in 1771 with small fights against corrupt officials. The brothers surprised
08:09
their enemies and had the support of the people. They quickly took control of a large part of central
08:14
Vietnam. As the rebellion grew, the brothers had a plan. Nguyen Ngoc focused on running the areas they
08:21
controlled. He made a fair government that helped the farmers. Nguyen Hue led the army and won many battles
08:27
against the Nguyen lords in the south. One of their biggest wins was in 1777 when they took
08:33
Qi Nong, the Nguyen lords' capital. This showed how strong they were and scared the rulers.
08:39
It also gave them a city by the sea, which helped them control trade and get more resources.
08:47
The Battle of Nguyen Ngoc Hoi Dong Da fought on January 29, 1789, is a very important battle in
08:54
Vietnamese history. The Qing dynasty of China came to help the lay emperor and sent a huge army to
08:59
Vietnam. The Qing army led by General Sun Shi Yi thought they would easily win and march to Thang
09:05
Long which is Hanoi today. But Nguyen Hue who was now called Emperor Quang Trung, had a plan. He quickly
09:12
got his army ready and surprised the Qing army. The Battle of Nguyen Ngoc Hoi Dong Da was a big win for
09:17
the Taesan. Emperor Quang Trung was a clever leader and he used the land and surprise attacks to beat the
09:23
bigger Qing army. This win kept Vietnam independent and made Emperor Quang Trung a hero.
09:30
Even after the big win at Nguyen Ngoc Hoi Dong Da, the Taesan dynasty started to have problems.
09:36
The leaders fought amongst themselves for power which caused problems. After Emperor Quang Trung died
09:42
in 1792, there was even more fighting and they lost the unity that made them strong. Nguyen An,
09:48
a member of the Nguyen Lord family also caused problems. He went to Siam, which is Thailand today,
09:54
and got his army ready. With help from other countries he attacked the Taesan and took back
09:58
land in the south. He used the Taesan's problems to his advantage. The Qing dynasty also kept putting
10:04
pressure on the Taesan. They didn't want a strong Vietnam and helped Nguyen An to make the Taesan weaker.
10:10
After many years of fighting, Nguyen An, with help from French soldiers and Siam,
10:19
finally defeated the Taesan in 1802. This ended the Taesan dynasty and started a new time in Vietnam
10:25
with the Nguyen dynasty. Nguyen An became Emperor Jia Long and ruled all of Vietnam. He made Hue in
10:32
central Vietnam, his capital city. Emperor Jia Long brought peace after many years of war and Vietnam
10:38
began to recover. The Nguyen dynasty made changes to make the government stronger,
10:43
made Confucianism the main belief system, and improved the army. The Nguyen dynasty ruled
10:48
Vietnam for over 100 years and had a big impact on the country.
10:55
The Taesan Wars, although short, are still important in Vietnam today. The rebellion showed
11:00
that people can change even the strongest governments. The Taesan brothers, especially Emperor
11:05
Quang Trung, are remembered as heroes who fought for Vietnam. Their victory at Ngoc Hoi Dong Da makes
11:12
Vietnamese people proud. The Taesan also made some changes to help the poor. They lowered taxes and
11:17
helped farmers. These changes, although short-lived, showed that a fairer government was possible.
11:26
You can still see signs of the Taesan Wars all over Vietnam. There are many places you can visit
11:31
to learn more about this time. In Binh Din province, where the rebellion started, you can see the Taesan
11:36
citadel, where the brothers planned their battles. The Quang Trung Museum in Quai Nam has things from
11:41
that time and tells the story of Emperor Quang Trung. Near Hanoi you can visit Ngoc Hoi Dong Da where the
11:48
important battle took place. There is a temple for Emperor Quang Trung and a memorial for the soldiers who
11:54
fought. These places are more than just tourist spots. They are places to remember and learn about the
11:59
people who fought for Vietnam's freedom.
