00:00
Hi, I'm Warren Spector, founder of Ion Storm's Austin office.
00:09
I conceived and directed the first Deus Ex game.
00:13
I'm going to take a little time to tell you a little bit about what we're up to right now.
00:16
But before we get to Invisible War, the sequel to Deus Ex,
00:19
I'd like to start by taking a look back at the first game,
00:22
what made it special to me and to the rest of the team.
00:25
For one thing, obviously we were all gratified that it was
00:28
as well received by the public as it was.
00:30
Deus Ex was the best-selling game I've worked on in 20 years of being in the game business.
00:36
And on top of that, it was critically acclaimed.
00:38
It won over 30 Game of the Year awards worldwide, including a BAFTA.
00:42
I got to hold the same award that Laurence Olivier held, which was kind of a thrill.
00:47
Let's talk a little bit about what made the first Deus Ex game special,
00:51
the ability to create a unique alternative game,
00:53
the ability to solve problems the way you want to.
00:56
You get to make this game the kind of game you want.
00:59
It's not just a shooter. It's not just a role-playing game.
01:02
It has elements of shooters. It has elements of role-playing games.
01:05
It even has elements of strategy games.
01:09
And yet, you put all those pieces together and it came out as something new and unique
01:14
and very different in the world of gaming.
01:16
So how do we top that?
01:17
We want to take everything that made Deus Ex special and do more of it.
01:20
We want to take everything that worked against the Deus Ex experience
01:23
or wasn't critical and cut it.
01:25
The Deus Ex play style, where you get to apply some common sense
01:29
and decide how you're going to solve problems.
01:31
We always thought that was a pretty mass-market idea.
01:33
But we threw all these barriers to players getting at all the gameplay goodness we created.
01:38
Our interface was unnecessarily complex.
01:41
The terminology we used was a little too polysyllabic, you know?
01:48
In Invisible War, what we're trying to do is make the game more accessible to a larger audience.
01:53
We want a lot of people playing the game and getting at what we think makes Deus Ex special.
01:58
On a more specific level, what we're trying to do is have even deeper character development.
02:07
We're giving you even more choices about how you develop your player character.
02:11
We're completely rethinking our technology.
02:14
It's all new from the ground up and absolutely state of the art.
02:17
The AI is much enhanced.
02:18
I don't know that there's another game out there that can boast of a comparable collection of simulation elements.
02:24
It's not just for the sake of technology that we're doing this.
02:27
It's so, again, players can discover their own solutions to problems.
02:31
They can figure out how they want to do stuff.
02:34
They can shoot everything that moves.
02:36
They can shoot nothing.
02:37
They can talk to everyone.
02:39
They can hack their way past problems using computer systems.
02:42
They can figure out how to get past anything in the game the way they want.
02:46
That's critical to us.
02:48
We've got a really cool storyline that picks up where the last game left off.
02:53
And it's still very conspiracy-oriented, very mystery-oriented.
02:59
It actually starts 15 years after the first game.
03:02
And one thing that you're not going to get out of me or anybody else on this team for a while is,
03:06
which of the three endgames from the first game we're actually sequeling.
03:10
We have an interesting idea about that.
03:12
We're not telling anybody what we're doing.
03:14
Let's go!
03:15
Move!
03:16
But it's 15 years in the future.
03:17
The world, I will tell you, is in a sorry state.
03:21
Nations and various religious orders are using terrorism as a tool to impose their will,
03:29
to set things right in the world as they define right.
03:33
Interestingly, you don't play J.C. Denton, the character from the first game.
03:40
You play a person named Alex D., who can be either male or female.
03:44
You play a trainee for a high-tech anti-terrorist organization.
03:47
But, as you might expect in a Deus Ex game, you discover that things aren't quite what they seem.
03:52
You're very powerful.
03:54
You can create a character with the power to run 40 miles an hour and as fast as a car,
03:59
or throw the car if you want to go that way, or move silently, or see through walls,
04:04
or suck the life force out of dead bodies to heal yourself if you take damage.
04:09
One of your first goals, one of your most important goals, is to find Paul again and find J.C. down.
04:16
You have to go find the characters who you played and interacted with in the first game.
04:21
So, you'll encounter a lot of old friends, a lot of old enemies,
04:25
and at the end of the day, you have to decide who you're going to fight,
04:28
who you're going to help, whether you're going to fight at all,
04:31
and, as in the first game, what the world looks like at the end of the game.
04:34
It's not about killing the evil bad guy. It's not about killing everything that moves.
04:38
It's about, who are you in this world? How do you interact with this world?
04:43
And, what do you want the world to be when you get done?
04:46
Why don't we take a look at the introduction, where it all begins.
04:50
Keep going on, keep going on, keep going on.
04:54
Let's go.
04:56
Come on!
05:09
Come on!
05:10
the infusion lab evacuated trainee gave the order myself what did you tell them i told them to run
05:40
that's all they need to hear until we reach the end agreed anything new on the terrorists he's in the city no
05:46
idea i'm clear whether we're the target an academic distinction if you really had an anide decimator
06:04
the security bots have acquired the target we're too late
06:13
let's go
06:21
hmm
06:33
so
06:41
Jesus, did they destroy the whole city to get at us?
07:06
Our enemy's on that distance.
07:09
Perhaps we made a new enemy.
07:11
What do they already know about the Seattle facility?
07:16
We have other options.
07:18
We aren't equipped to fight in war.
07:20
We're going to change the terms of engagement.
07:22
It's our war, not theirs.
07:25
We don't need cities or armies.
07:27
We have the cells of human bodies.
07:29
An invisible weapon for an invisible war.
