Melbourne’s sea of red this election brings with it a wave of teal independents

In Melbourne’s sea of red the teal tide could be ebbing. Kooyong has been called in favour of Monique Ryan, but other Independent seats remain too close to call.

00:10It's been a hard campaign team.

00:14But in Goldstein, hope wins.

00:19But the revelry was short lived as the vote tightened

00:22and Liberal Tim Wilson also sniffed a win.

00:25Today both were waiting for the result to firm up.

00:28Ms Daniel's camp conceding it could be days before the winner's known.

00:33At the nearby teal contest in Koo Yong,

00:36the celebrations were on politically firmer ground.

00:39I just came so close to falling off the back of the stage.

00:46following what was a muddy campaign.

00:48Despite the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

00:51and this band of brothers has overcome the brethren.

00:55This morning the Ryan campaign pack down was already in full swing.

01:00I haven't heard from Amelia Hamer yet.

01:02The result has not yet been confirmed.

01:04So I think it's entirely reasonable that I haven't heard from her as yet.

01:07Another independent contest still open is Flinders.

01:10Ben Smith trails Liberal Zoe Mackenzie by a few thousand votes.

01:14We're cautious and confident and hopeful.

01:18We'll be not celebrating any time soon until the AEC really gives us that confirmation.

01:23Climate 200 poured millions of dollars into this year's election,

01:27contributing more than half a million dollars to Zoe Daniel's campaign

01:30and an unknown amount to both Monique Ryan and Ben Smith.

01:34But as the core flutes come down and the counting continues,

01:37the influence independence will have in the new parliament

01:40may be weakened by Labor's success.
