00:00¶¶
01:00It was a damp, chilly morning at the very end of autumn.
01:06A cold, grey mist hung in the silent air.
01:10Wilfred Toteflax hurried towards the weavers' cottage.
01:13He'd just woken up from an exciting dream about exploring.
01:17A dream which reminded him of an old book the weavers had on a shelf in their workroom.
01:24Thank you very much.
01:25There.
01:27That's four blankets.
01:30I'm just finishing number five.
01:31So this one will make six.
01:33Oh, it's a shame we couldn't match the yellow.
01:36But we've used the last of Great Grandpa Blackthorn's special lichen.
01:40And no other dye comes close.
01:42I don't know how we'll ever find more.
01:44It grows somewhere in the mountains.
01:46But Great Grandpa Blackthorn was the only one who was ever able to find it.
01:51Oh, come in.
01:55Oh, hello everybody.
01:56Hello, Wilfred.
01:57Have you come to help?
01:58Huh?
01:59Help?
01:59We're making blankets for the bowls up in the high hills.
02:02The moths have made holes in all their quilts.
02:05They've no time to make new ones before the cold weather comes.
02:08Oh, what would you like me to do?
02:11Well, nothing really.
02:12We've nearly finished.
02:13Oh, good.
02:14May I please read Daring Explorers of Old Hedge Days?
02:19Again?
02:21Here it is.
02:22One of the most famous explorers of Old Hedge Days was Sir Hogmeade Whorehound.
02:28His greatest adventure started when he set off alone to look for gold in the high hills.
02:33Hello.
02:34Hello, Grandpa.
02:36There you are, Papa.
02:38Nearly ready.
02:39Flax is working on the last blanket.
02:41Good, good.
02:42Because we must leave soon if we're going to get to the high hills before dark.
02:46It's a very long way.
02:48The high hills?
02:49You're going to the high hills?
02:51Oh, Mr. Apple, may I go too, please?
02:54Oh, it's not for me to say, Wilfred.
02:58We'll have to ask your parents.
03:03Oh, may I go too, please?
03:06Well...
03:07Please, please, please, please, please, please, please.
03:11All right.
03:12You may go as long as you're helpful and do as Mr. Apple says.
03:17I will, Mum.
03:21OK, I've got my robe, whistle, fire sticks, a ground sheet.
03:29What do you need a kettle for?
03:31As Sir Hogmeade Whorehound says,
03:33a good explorer takes in his trusty pack all he needs to survive an adventure.
03:37Ha, ha, ha, survive an adventure?
03:41You're only taking blankets to the voles.
03:44Yes, but we're going into the high hills.
03:49I'm off.
03:52Is Wilfred coming?
03:53Here I am.
03:55Wilfred, do you really need all that equipment?
04:00It looks terribly heavy.
04:02Why don't you leave some of it behind?
04:04But I must take everything.
04:06How can I be an explorer without my trusty pack?
04:09Oh, all right.
04:11But don't ask anyone else to carry anything.
04:18Good boy, Wilfred.
04:19Bye, Wilfred.
04:20Take care, son.
04:21Bye, bye, Wilfred.
04:26As they passed the store stump,
04:28Wilfred wondered what kind of adventures he was going to have.
04:31Maybe we'll be cut off by a rock slide or chased by a hungry owl.
04:37Wilfred!
04:38Huh?
04:38This way?
04:41Sorry, Mr. Apple.
04:44And as they got to the Old Oak Palace,
04:47Wilfred decided that one day he would write a book about his explorations.
04:51The High Hills.
04:53My mountain adventure.
04:56At last, they reached the stepping stones where they crossed the stream.
05:02Steady, Wilfred.
05:04Thanks, Mr. Apple.
05:06Lunch?
05:07Yes, please.
05:08You know, Wilfred,
05:12you could leave some of your gear here
05:15and we could pick it up on the way back.
05:18No, thank you, Mr. Apple.
05:19If I'm going to be an explorer, and I am,
05:22I must be prepared for anything.
05:26All right.
05:28I'll eat your way.
05:31Are we prepared to start climbing?
05:35The sooner we leave the bottom,
05:37as soon as we get to the top.
05:45Thank you, Mr. Apple.
05:47When the mice set off again,
05:49the path quickly became steeper and steeper.
05:54Oh, look at that.
05:55Oh, look at that.
06:00Yes.
06:02We don't call these the High Hills for nothing.
06:12By teatime, it was getting dark and cold,
06:15and the hills around were shrouded in mist.
06:17Wilfred didn't want to admit it, but he was beginning to feel a little bit tired.
06:22Oh, look!
06:24Look!
06:25A light!
06:32Come in.
06:37Oh, Pip!
06:38Fancy you climbing all this way and with your bad leg, too.
06:42We couldn't leave you without blankets, now, could we?
06:47Come in.
06:48Come in.
06:49Come on.
06:50Come on in.
06:51Come right in.
06:51Let's get you sat down in front of the fire and get you comfortable.
06:54Does anybody want any more?
07:01This is the best bilberry soup I've ever tasted.
07:06Oh, it's delicious.
07:09This way, young mouse, before you fall asleep in the bread basket.
07:17Here you go.
07:18That's it.
07:20Are you going to wake me up at dawn so we can go exploring, Mr. Apple?
07:23Oh, no, no, no, no.
07:26I think we all deserve a lie-in.
07:29And then after breakfast, we'll head back home.
07:36Sweet dreams.
07:39Head back home?
07:40If I'm going to be a great explorer, I must do some exploring.
07:47But how?
07:48When dawn crept over the rocky hillside, there was no sign of life in the Vols' cottage.
07:59It wasn't until the sun was well up above the horizon that Vols and mice began to stir.
08:04Oh, the sun's out!
08:06It's a hard life up here in the hills, isn't it?
08:13Oh, yes, but a good life.
08:14We wouldn't want it any other way.
08:16Though it would be nicer if it didn't get quite so cold,
08:19and when the mist comes down, we're quite cut off.
08:23While Wilfred listened to the Vols talk about their life,
08:26he tried to work up the courage to ask if they'd ever gone exploring,
08:29if they'd ever found gold.
08:31Um, another delicious meal.
08:36Just what we needed to send it on our way.
08:40That's right.
08:41Time to get back to work.
08:43But, um...
08:43Mrs. Eyebride will be wanting her new blanket.
08:46We haven't even started it.
08:48But...
08:48What kind of you to make all those blankets for us.
08:51Very thoughtful.
08:52They'll keep the cold out, that's for sure.
08:55But, um, but aren't we going to go exploring?
08:57I'm sorry, Wilfred, but Lily and I must get back.
09:00But you don't have to get back, do you, Mr. Apple?
09:03Well, I do, but not...
09:06Can't we do a little bit of exploring?
09:09Please?
09:10Not much, just a little.
09:12There are some fine junipers beyond the crag.
09:14And you know how Mrs. Apple loves junipers.
09:17Let's go and find some for her, please.
09:19Oh.
09:22I don't know why not.
09:24Yes!
09:26Goodbye, then.
09:27Goodbye.
09:27And thank you.
09:28Goodbye now.
09:29Bye!
09:33Uh-oh.
09:35Wilfred!
09:38At last, I get to do some real exploring.
09:42Now, which way is the wind going?
09:45Hmm.
09:46The wind isn't blowing.
09:48So that means I'd better go...
09:51This way.
09:53I wonder how real explorers walk.
09:58Like this!
10:01Wilfred!
10:02This way, Mr. Apple!
10:06My mountain adventure by Wilfred Toadflax.
10:10It was a sunny day with no wind when I started my explorations.
10:14I wonder what's up there.
10:20Wilfred!
10:22Wait for me!
10:30Wow!
10:31What's this?
10:33Oh!
10:35Oh!
10:36Gold!
10:37Wilfred!
10:38Wilfred!
10:40Come down from there!
10:43Mr. Apple!
10:44I've found gold!
10:45Don't be sad, Wilfred!
10:47There's no gold here!
10:48Come down at once!
10:50Oh!
10:52Oh!
10:52I can't!
10:56Are you sure?
10:57Positive!
10:58Right!
10:59Then don't move!
11:02I'll come up and get you!
11:06Oh!
11:07Oh!
11:09Oh!
11:10I really am much too old for this!
11:14Oh!
11:21Slowly.
11:22One paw at a time.
11:27And don't look down.
11:31Be careful, Mr. Apple!
11:34Ah!
11:41It's all right, Wilfred.
11:44I'm almost there.
11:46Here we are.
11:55Now what?
11:56Now we find a place where it'll be easier to climb down.
12:01Follow me.
12:02Be careful how you go, Wilfred.
12:13I, um, I bet this kind of thing happens to real explorers all the time.
12:19Oh, I'm sure it does, Wilfred.
12:20Oh, I'm sure it does, Wilfred.
12:21But don't think about that now.
12:23Just think about putting one paw in front of the other.
12:28Oh, oh, oh, no.
12:32Oh, this is just what we need.
12:36If only we had some rope, we ought to tie ourselves together.
12:40I've got some rope.
12:42Have you?
12:43Essential equipment for my trusty pack.
12:45Very good, Wilfred.
12:49Now, turn to the rock face, and we'll ease our way along.
12:55One paw at a time.
13:08Lily, Flax, you're back!
13:11Where are Grandpa and Wilfred?
13:12Oh, they stayed behind.
13:15Wilfred wanted to do some exploring.
13:18I should think they'll be back just after dark.
13:20Oh, good.
13:21I'll watch for them.
13:22Primrose would be watching for a long time,
13:25because her grandfather and Wilfred were nowhere near home.
13:30Shh.
13:36At least we can see now.
13:38Yes, but it's not going to do us any good.
13:41Wilfred, I have absolutely no idea where we are.
13:46You don't?
13:46No.
13:50Wilfred, I'm afraid we're going to have to spend the night on the mountain.
13:56Oh, let's hope there's some place nearby to camp.
14:05Even though Wilfred knew it would be cold and dark on the mountain,
14:09and even though he knew Mr. Apple was not exactly enthusiastic about this turn of events,
14:14he couldn't help but be excited.
14:17He was going to camp out, just like a real explorer.
14:21Yes, I think this will do.
14:27It's perfect.
14:29Oh, if only we could make a fire.
14:33We can.
14:34Essential equipment, remember?
14:35Remember?
14:45Primrose?
14:46Primrose?
14:47Over here, Papa.
14:47What ever are you doing out here?
14:49I'm waiting for Grandpa and Wilfred to come back from the high hills.
14:53It's very dark now.
14:55You know, they probably came home a different way,
14:58and are at this very moment sitting next to the fire at Crabapple Cottage,
15:01while we're standing out here freezing our tails off.
15:04Why didn't I think of that?
15:06Let's go.
15:07And I'm very glad that your essential equipment included food,
15:14because all I had in my pocket were the two sandwiches the Voles gave us.
15:19It was in Sir Hogmeade Whorehound's book.
15:21It told me all about essential things.
15:24Well, I think you're the most essential thing round here, Wilfred.
15:30Mr. Apple?
15:31Yes, Wilfred?
15:32Will you tell me the story about how you got your limp?
15:35Oh, Wilfred, you've heard that one a thousand times.
15:40It happened when you were out exploring, didn't it?
15:42Hmm.
15:43I went off on my own,
15:46even though everyone warned me not to,
15:49because of the weasel.
15:50But you saw it, and you didn't run away.
15:53That was my first mistake.
15:55No, you ran towards the weasel,
15:56because you were trying to chase it away from Brambly Hedge.
15:59That was my second mistake,
16:01but I didn't realise it until I felt the weasel's teeth on my leg.
16:07But you got away!
16:09Oh, Mr. Apple,
16:12you must have been awfully brave.
16:14And now I'm awfully tired.
16:23So the two mice crawled into their little cave on the rocky ledge.
16:29As they fell asleep,
16:30the only sound they could hear
16:32was the murmur of a stream
16:34that ran through the valley below
16:36like a silver ribbon in the moonlight.
16:39Who ever could that be at this time of night?
17:03Sorry to bother you so late, Flax, but...
17:06Grandpa and Wilfred aren't back from the high hills.
17:09Did they say anything to you about a change of plan?
17:12No.
17:13But it was such a beautiful day.
17:15Perhaps they did more exploring than they meant to.
17:17And ended up spending another night with the voles.
17:20See, Betty?
17:21There's nothing to worry about.
17:23And no matter what,
17:25Wilfred is in safe pause with Pep.
17:27I think we should all go to bed.
17:29If they're not back in the morning,
17:31let's meet at the Old Oak Palace
17:32and decide then if we should take any action.
17:36Mr. Apple!
17:47Mr. Apple, look!
17:49The mist's gone!
17:50And there's a path down the mountain!
17:53OK.
17:54We'll have to take it slowly.
17:56My leg is...
17:58Oh!
17:59Oh!
18:00It's very sore.
18:02Here.
18:02Put some of this on it.
18:04What is it?
18:04Cup-free ointment?
18:06It was part of the...
18:06Essential equipment.
18:10I should have known.
18:12When Wilfred and Mr. Apple didn't return,
18:18Mr. and Mrs. Toadflax,
18:20Mrs. Apple,
18:20Lord Woodmouse and Primrose
18:22decided to go and look for them.
18:24Flax and Lily went along to show them the way.
18:26I do hope they're all right.
18:28Of course they are.
18:30Pip is very experienced at this kind of thing.
18:33I know he'll be taking good care of Wilfred.
18:38Are you all right, Mr. Apple?
18:40Oh, it's funny how it's harder going down
18:46than it was going up.
18:50Here, let me help.
18:55OK.
18:56I know.
18:57Oh, I'm sorry, Wilfred.
19:01But I can't go any further.
19:03Are you sure?
19:04Oh, positive.
19:06But I can't go on and just leave you here.
19:11And anyway, I don't know where here is.
19:14Oh, this is all my fault.
19:17If only we hadn't gone exploring.
19:20What are we going to do?
19:22Is this the way you went yesterday?
19:24Yes.
19:25Then we cross the stream at the stepping stones.
19:29Meanwhile, high up in the hills.
19:32Hmm.
19:33Well, the way I see it,
19:34we can't go back and we can't go forward.
19:37Hmm.
19:38Hey.
19:40Oh.
19:41That pretty much sums it up, Wilfred.
19:43Wait a minute.
19:50I'm afraid I'm going to have to wait longer than that.
19:55I've got it.
19:57We'll sail down the stream.
19:59We'll what down the what?
20:01We'll sail down the stream.
20:03Yes, we'll tie these logs together to make a raft,
20:06just like real explorers.
20:08It'll be great.
20:09Oh, I'm sure it will, Wilfred.
20:14I'm sure it will.
20:20Come on, Grandma.
20:22Let's go.
20:23Oh, not too fast now, Primrose.
20:34There.
20:35What do you think, Mr. Apple?
20:36Oh, I think Sir Hogweed or Hound would have been proud.
20:43Really?
20:44Really, Wilfred.
20:47Ready?
20:48Ready.
20:49Ready.
20:49Ready.
21:04Whoa, whoa, whoa.
21:07Come on, Kel.
21:09Aaaaaaah!
21:12Whoa!
21:14Whoa!
21:22Aaaaaaah!
21:24Whoa!
21:26Whoa!
21:27Whoa!
21:28Whoa!
21:29Whoa!
21:32Hang on!
21:33Wait, wait!
21:34Aaaaaaah!
21:45This is mine!
21:55I climbed up on a rock and looked everywhere and I still didn't see them.
22:00What's that?
22:05Just hold on a minute.
22:07There.
22:11It's a hat.
22:13It's Wilfred's!
22:15I made it for his last birthday.
22:17Oh no!
22:19What could have happened to them?
22:21You don't think!
22:22Wait a minute.
22:23Did you hear that?
22:26Oh!
22:27It sounds...
22:29like Wilfred!
22:30Oh, Wilfred!
22:31Look!
22:32Brimrose!
22:33It is Wilfred!
22:35Wilfred!
22:36Look!
22:37Brimrose!
22:39It is Wilfred!
22:40Wilfred!
22:41Wilfred!
22:42Wilfred!
22:43Look!
22:44Brimrose!
22:45It is Wilfred!
22:46Wilfred!
22:47Wilfred!
22:48Wilfred!
22:49Wilfred!
22:50Wilfrid! Grandpa!
23:00But we never would have made it if Wilfrid hadn't been such a good explorer.
23:05Thank you, Wilfrid.
23:07Oh, it's all right, Mr Apple.
23:09It was my fault really for climbing up that rock looking for gold.
23:12And I found some!
23:14Did you? Oh, let me have a look.
23:17Where is it?
23:19Wilfrid, that's not gold.
23:22It's not?
23:23No, but it's just as valuable.
23:27Have a look, Lily.
23:29Wilfrid, you've found some of Great Grandpa Blackthorn's lichen.
23:35The dye we use for our wool.
23:38It's very, very rare.
23:40And we completely run out.
23:43Wilfrid, this is better than gold.
23:47Oh, Wilfrid!
23:51Well done.
23:53Oh, Wilfrid.
23:55What an adventure.
23:57Next time, I'm going too.
23:59I'll see you next time.
24:01Do you have any?
24:02Yeah.
24:07It's my stop.
24:10I'll see you next time.
24:11Bye.
