00:06According to Mercury's former bass player,

00:10the musical partnership wound up failing after Jackson,

00:13invited a llama into the recording studio.

00:17Few musicians have had as fundamental an impact

00:19on the world of pop culture as Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury,

00:24enjoying tremendous success in both their solo careers

00:27and in their individual bands, Mercury and Queen,

00:30Jackson in the Jackson 5.

00:33Mercury and Jackson forever changed the way audiences listened to pop music,

00:38shaping the industry as a whole in the latter days of the 20th century.

00:42While each musician partnered with many different collaborators over the years,

00:46the two musical legends never managed to sit down

00:49and record an entire project together.

00:52Rather, the closest the two ever came to working together

00:55took the form of three unsuccessful duets recorded in the mid-1980s.

01:00Why exactly was the partnership unsuccessful?

01:04According to Mercury's bass player on the album Mr. Bad Guy,

01:08the two icons apparently clashed over Jackson

01:11inviting his pet llama into the studio's recording booth.

01:14As reported in the New York Post,

01:17Mercury took a brief sabbatical from Queen in 1983

01:20to more fully explore his own artistic endeavors.

01:23After hitting it off with his prominent contemporary Jackson,

01:28Mercury and the King of Pop attempted to record

01:30three duets at Jackson's residence in Encino, California.

01:35While working on recordings for victory,

01:37state of shock,

01:38and there must be more to life than this though,

01:41Mercury allegedly started to express frustration

01:43at Jackson's strange antics,

01:45including an unwelcome intrusion from his beloved llama.

01:49I think the last straw was when Michael brought his pet llama into the studio,

01:53bassist Joe Burt told the Post.

01:56I think Freddy sort of took umbrage to that.

01:59Previously, the failed collaboration had been hinted at in 2012's documentary,

02:04Freddy Mercury, The Great Pretender.

02:06In it, Queen's manager, Jim Miami Beach,

02:09recalled a conversation he had with Mercury

02:11over his working relationship with Jackson.

02:15Mercury rang me and said,

02:16Miami, dear, can you get over here?

02:19You've got to get me out of here.

02:20I'm recording with a llama,

02:22Beach said in the documentary.
