Sir Keir Starmer conceded that Labour’s loss by just six votes to Reform UK in the Runcorn and Helsby by-election was a setback and said that the government needed to act “further and faster” in delivering change. The narrow victory for new MP Sarah Pochin saw Reform taking a constituency which Labour won with a majority of almost 14,700 less than 12 months ago. Report by Covellm. 00:00Many prime ministers respond to this by saying oppositions always do well in
00:05these sorts of by-elections or it was very close and it was very close all of
00:09that is perfectly true but my response is to say I get it we were elected into
00:16government at the general election last year to deliver change we've started
00:20that work waiting lists are coming down wages are going up interest rates are
00:25down that's all good for working people but the message I take out of these
00:29results is that we need to go further and faster with change people need to see
00:35and feel that change that chimes with what I've been saying for a number of
00:39weeks we're going to double down on that now deliver the change that people need
00:43so that's my response yes it was close but actually let's focus on what really
00:48matters here which is delivering the change that people want even faster and
00:52going even further reform have a very different agenda to this government
00:57reform want to charge to use the NHS that will never happen under a Labour
01:01government we're clear we stand with Ukraine you reform thorn over Putin we're
01:09clear that we want to deliver more rights for working people in their workplace a
01:12reform turn up in Parliament a vote against that every single time they are
01:16big differences so I'm not taking away from the result I know from that that we've
01:22got to go further and faster there's some big fundamental value differences
01:26between a Labour government committed to the NHS free at the point of use and
01:30reform that want to charge for the NHS I'll never agree with that
