00:00
Thank you, Deputy Commissioner DiMontis.
00:03
Good afternoon, Mr. Secretary, Dr. Bhattacharya, Governor, Speaker,
00:08
the many Maha Moms and the kids here supporting the effort.
00:11
Thank you for being here.
00:14
That's great.
00:20
Today, the FDA is taking action to remove petroleum-based food dyes
00:25
from the U.S. food supply and from medications.
00:27
For the last 50 years, American children have increasingly been living
00:33
in a toxic soup of synthetic chemicals.
00:37
The scientific community has conducted a number of studies raising concerns
00:41
about the correlation between petroleum-based synthetic dyes
00:45
and several health conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,
00:51
obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, cancer, genomic disruption,
00:56
GI issues, as I've seen in the hospital, and allergic reactions.
01:02
For example, this Lancet study conducted a randomized, double-blinded,
01:10
placebo-controlled study on food dyes and concluded that artificial colors
01:16
in the diet, quote, result in increased hyperactivity.
01:20
So why are we taking a gamble?
01:26
Parents, moms, and dads have also tried to raise attention to the issue.
01:31
Some parents have observed that these chemicals cause hyperactivity
01:34
and even aggressive behavior, and that it subsides when the chemicals are removed
01:39
from the diet of the child, and sometimes even reoccurs when those petroleum-based
01:45
chemical dyes are reintroduced.
01:49
As I know from my experience, taking care of children as a doctor,
01:53
you have to always listen to the mom.
01:59
Other studies have found that artificial colors that create vibrant colors
02:04
mess with the child's developing brain
02:06
to make ultra-processed foods more attractive,
02:10
even when the child already feels full.
02:15
These studies have associated food colors directly with obesity and diabetes.
02:21
While America's children are sick and suffering,
02:25
41% of children have at least one health condition,
02:30
and one in five are on medication.
02:32
The answer is not more ozempic, more ADHD medication, and more antidepressants.
02:40
There's a role for those medications,
02:42
but we have to look at underlying root causes.
02:47
The F in FDA stands for food.
02:51
Now, there's no one ingredient that accounts for the child chronic disease epidemic.
02:56
And let's be honest,
02:57
taking petroleum-based food dyes out of the food supply
03:00
is not a silver bullet that will instantly make America's children healthy.
03:04
But it is one important step.
03:07
This administration is not interested
03:09
in continuing down the path
03:12
of doing the same old things
03:13
as we watch our nation's children get sicker.
03:17
We need fresh, new approaches.
03:22
Cancer and diabetes in young people
03:24
is going up at an alarming rate,
03:26
and nobody seems to know why.
03:28
We have to turn our attention
03:31
to underlying causes,
03:33
such as chemicals and toxins
03:36
that children are exposed to,
03:37
not just more insulin and chemotherapy.
03:42
And let's not forget
03:43
that the best way to lower drug prices
03:45
is to stop taking drugs we don't need.
03:49
30 states concerned about this very issue
03:55
have introduced bills or laws
03:58
with a patchwork of standards for food companies.
04:02
So the food industry,
04:03
which has many good people,
04:05
has asked for clarity.
04:08
So today the FDA is taking the following steps.
04:11
Number one,
04:11
establishing a national standard and timeline
04:14
for the food industry
04:15
to transition from petroleum-based food dyes
04:18
to natural alternatives.
04:20
Number two,
04:21
initiating a process
04:23
to revoke authorization
04:24
of synthetic food colorings,
04:26
including those not in production,
04:28
namely citrus, red, number two,
04:30
and orange bee,
04:31
within the coming weeks.
04:34
Number three,
04:34
taking steps to eliminate
04:36
the remaining six synthetic dyes
04:39
on the market
04:40
from the U.S. food supply.
04:42
Specifically,
04:43
red dye number 40,
04:44
yellow dye number five,
04:45
yellow dye number six,
04:46
blue dye number one,
04:48
blue dye number two,
04:49
and green dye number three
04:50
by the end of next year.
05:01
We are also requesting food companies
05:05
to remove red dye number three
05:06
sooner than the 2027-2028 deadline
05:11
previously announced.
05:13
These steps that we are taking
05:15
means that the FDA
05:17
is effectively removing
05:19
all petroleum-based food dyes
05:21
from the U.S. food supply.
05:32
For companies that are currently using
05:35
petroleum-based red dye,
05:39
try watermelon juice
05:41
or beet juice.
05:49
For companies currently combining
05:52
petroleum-based yellow chemical
05:54
and red dyes together,
05:57
try carrot juice.
05:59
The FDA is also announcing plans today
06:05
to authorize four additional
06:08
natural color additives
06:09
using natural ingredients
06:11
in the coming weeks,
06:12
while also accelerating
06:14
the review and approval
06:15
of other natural ingredient colors.
06:18
I want to take a moment
06:20
to thank America's food manufacturers.
06:23
Many have been extremely cooperative.
06:26
There are many good people
06:27
in food manufacturing,
06:29
delivering on the needs
06:30
of the American public,
06:31
and they have done exactly
06:34
what we have asked them to do.
06:36
A hundred years ago,
06:37
we asked them to focus
06:40
on mass food production
06:41
to solve food insecurity.
06:44
Now, given our child
06:47
chronic disease epidemic,
06:48
an enormous suffering
06:50
and cost that has ensued,
06:51
we have to come together
06:53
to address the new problem.
06:55
That's right,
06:55
we have to come together.
06:59
If we can get beyond
07:00
the tribalism in our society,
07:03
rampant in our culture,
07:05
we will realize
07:06
that we all want
07:08
the same things.
07:11
Republican, Democrat,
07:13
and independent moms
07:14
showed up in high numbers
07:16
to vote for President Trump
07:18
on this very issue
07:20
that Secretary Kennedy
07:21
has championed.
07:22
Moms across America
07:25
have spoken
07:26
and they want
07:27
more honesty
07:28
and humility
07:30
from our nation's
07:32
healthcare leaders.
07:34
And if we're being honest,
07:37
ADHD is not
07:38
a genetic problem
07:39
and our obesity epidemic
07:42
is not a willpower problem.
07:44
It's something that
07:46
adults have done
07:47
to children.
07:48
I was reading
07:50
a New England Journal
07:51
of Medicine article
07:52
recently,
07:54
came out in January,
07:55
referring to the
07:56
chronic disease epidemic
07:57
in children,
07:58
specifically
07:59
infertility,
08:03
diabetes,
08:03
obesity,
08:04
attention deficit disorder,
08:05
and many other
08:06
health problems.
08:08
And it referred
08:09
to that group
08:10
of problems
08:11
with an interesting term.
08:12
It called them
08:14
non-communicable
08:15
diseases
08:16
of children.
08:18
Non-communicable
08:20
diseases.
08:22
Well, actually,
08:22
they are communicable.
08:25
But they're not getting,
08:25
kids are not getting
08:26
these diseases
08:27
from viruses
08:28
or bacteria.
08:29
They're getting them
08:30
from using their phones
08:31
and ultra-processed foods
08:33
and chemicals
08:34
and toxins
08:35
that we have introduced
08:36
into their world.
08:39
Gandhi once said,
08:41
Gandhi once said,
08:43
the true mark
08:44
of a society
08:45
can be found
08:46
in how it treats
08:47
its most vulnerable
08:49
members,
08:50
including children.
08:54
Secretary Kennedy
08:55
has said
08:56
that he would
08:58
instruct the FDA
08:59
to examine
08:59
concerning ingredients
09:01
in the nation's
09:02
food supply,
09:02
and today,
09:03
we are delivering
09:04
on that promise.
09:11
To be clear,
09:16
the transition
09:16
from petroleum-based
09:18
food dyes
09:19
to natural ingredient
09:22
food dyes
09:22
will not increase
09:24
food prices.
09:26
We know that
09:27
from other countries
09:28
that have already
09:28
made the transition.
09:30
It's not an opinion.
09:33
Today's announcement
09:34
fulfills the administration's
09:35
promise to use both
09:37
gold standard science
09:38
and common sense.
09:48
For the last 50 years,
09:50
we have been running
09:53
one of the largest
09:55
uncontrolled
09:56
scientific experiments
09:57
in the world
09:59
on our nation's children
10:01
without their consent.
10:02
And today,
10:05
we are removing
10:06
these petroleum-based
10:08
chemicals
10:08
from their food supply.
10:17
In summary,
10:19
we are simply asking
10:20
American food companies
10:22
to replace
10:23
petroleum-based
10:24
food dyes
10:24
with natural ingredients
10:26
for American children
10:28
just as they already do
10:30
for children
10:32
in other countries.
10:34
American children
10:35
deserve good health.
