How can the government take action to reduce this kind of anti-social growth?
00:06
Well I mean I've not been here that long. I've already picked up this amount in my bag and my
00:11
colleagues here have all have all got similar. So actions the government is
00:17
taking is we're introducing a deposit return scheme, a money-back scheme for
00:22
people. Most of the litter that you'll find on the roads is food and drink
00:25
containers. So if we can give people an incentive to bring back the bottle
00:30
containers and get a few pennies back, as some of your viewers and listeners will
00:34
remember from when they were younger, that can make a real difference. I mean
00:39
there should be more that we can do to raise awareness. I think there's a lot
00:43
of communities, including this one, where they have litter picking schemes like this
00:47
and this shows people, even if they're not taking part in it themselves, that this is
00:51
a community of people who care about their local area. That sends a positive
00:55
message that means that you're less likely to be to be dumping rubbish. If an
00:59
area looks generally well kept, and it's great to see the council mowing the
01:03
grass in this way, if an area looks well kept it's much less likely to have more
01:08
litter dumped in it as well. So investing in our communities, making them look
01:12
better, can make a real difference.
01:13
So I've been out and about in Peterborough. One of the things that people tell me
01:18
time and time again is this concern about litter, about fly tipping, about
01:22
antisocial behaviour in general of course. It's up to this government, us as a whole
01:27
team, locally and nationally, trying to work together to solve that.
01:30
Any thoughts on how you tackle this problem? How you stop people just throwing their cans and wrappers on the ground?
01:38
So I'm really encouraged by what I've heard from Steve today. Things like the
01:44
deposit return scheme I think are a really important step forward. We know there's more
01:48
to do, we're talking about what those next steps might be and I'm interested to hear
01:52
what proposals might be made. I think initiatives like this locally are really
01:56
important as well and it's really important that all of us as local
02:00
politicians are involved in this because it's important to stand alongside our
02:04
community and show that we're all working together for this.
