A great start, but could it be a period of dominance in the future?
Transcript
00:00So, well, looking at Liverpool and in terms of this sort of new era under Arnish Lott now,
00:08you know, when he first came in, not many predicted he'd go on to be this dominant in his first season.
00:13Obviously, Jurgen Klopp took time to win his first sort of titles as well.
00:18Let's just look ahead. Let's predict maybe Arnish Lott's era, this new era, this start,
00:24because they've got all the foundations there to carry it on.
00:27You know, Arnish Lott's not going to want to settle. He's going to want to really make a strong charge to defend that title next season.
00:34And then in the coming years as well, this could be a real start of a great era for Liverpool.
00:38How do you sort of sit? Where do you, you know, sort of compare it to other previous seasons?
00:44And how sort of confident are you that they are going to go on and make sure this period is a long lasting one
00:50and one that, you know, Reds fans can be really proud of?
00:53Yeah, I think it started last season that Jurgen Klopp, he called it Liverpool 2.0,
00:59because he knew that that first team had come to the end of its cycle
01:03and obviously Liverpool replenished the midfield and Arnish Lott's built on that.
01:08Now, what supporters would want is a better title defence than they did last time,
01:14because, yeah, the season was in COVID and there was a real defensive crisis,
01:19but they didn't really make it a decent fist of defending the title.
01:26I don't think anyone's expecting Liverpool next season to go and win three, four trophies,
01:31but Arnish Lott's made it clear that a club like Liverpool should always be challenging for silverware.
01:36And he said that they're going to bring in a couple of players to freshen things up,
01:41so they make sure that they do that.
01:44Look, it's going to be competitive next season.
01:46You're going to expect Man City to be back at their end of the season in a good vein of form.
01:50What are Arsenal going to do?
01:53Newcastle are on a real upward trajectory.
01:55And if they get in the Champions League, they could have money to spend.
01:58And teams like Chelsea, Aston Villa, you can't predict what they might do.
02:02So I don't think that Liverpool are going to become this dominant force like they were in the 80s.
02:09I don't think anyone expects that, to be honest with you.
02:11I don't think anyone expects them to go back to that period,
02:15because it is so competitive and so hard to compete week in, week out.
02:23Especially money-wise, you know, Liverpool's owners, they work on a self-sustainable basis.
02:29And even if they want to throw money out of PSR these days, you can't just do that.
02:35But I do think it's a new, you know, this Liverpool 2.0 going into its third season,
02:42its second under Arna Slott.
02:44This is when maybe you expect it to start hitting its peak.
02:48This is when you, they're ahead of the curve.
02:50Maybe even Arna Slott said that he expected, you know, when he came in, he said that
02:55a top-fall challenge was what was expected from the owners, really.
03:01Have a look around and see.
03:03You know, he's come out as a set battle, they're ahead of the curve.
03:05But that doesn't mean that Liverpool can now regress just because they've won the title.
03:09They need to keep kicking on and they need to keep challenging, as I say, for silverware on all fronts.
03:18They probably need to make a better go in Europe next season because, albeit they were knocked out by PSG,
03:23but it was the last 16, it was the quarterfinals in the Europa League the season before.
03:28It was the last 16 in the Champions League the season before that.
03:32So, three seasons, only getting to a quarterfinal of a Europa League.
03:36A little bit disappointing given Liverpool's European pedigree.
03:40So, that'll be a big aim next season and trying to have a go on another domestic piece of silverware.
03:45And, of course, the league.
03:47But it will be interesting what Arna Slott does definitely in the summer
03:50because you can see a few fresh faces as we discussed arriving.
03:55One second, mate, someone's at the door.
03:57No worries.
03:58And, yeah, well, you sort of answered it there in terms of European objectives,
04:06but how close do you think they are to really, you know, sitting down over the summer period,
04:10over the off-season and going, you know, the Champions League is something.
04:13We want to get back to that elite pedigree in terms of competing and going towards the latter stages
04:18because that was something under Jurgen Klopp, which was, you know, clearly a huge priority
04:22and Arna Slott's going to want to make it one as well.
04:25Yeah, of course, and Arna Slott is, you know, all Liverpool managers who win the league, we remember.
04:33But it is those ones who win the Champions League that, you know, you're in Klopp when I'm done here.
04:39Rafa Benitez, of course, he didn't do fantastic in the league, but he's hailed as, you know,
04:45one of Liverpool's best managers because what he achieved in 2005.
04:48And the players will want to do it as well.
04:53I think Mo Sal has said previously he always wants to win the Champions League.
04:57This season he's had more priority in the league, but you could see him shift into the Champions League again next season.
05:03What's that a part of his negotiations?
05:05Is he saying how seriously are we going to take the Champions League?
05:08I mean, let's be honest, the people take the Champions League seriously every year.
05:13I think we're just unlucky to run to a PSG size.
05:16But as you say, they want to prove that they're one of the better teams in Europe.
05:22They're unlucky this season with what happens.
05:26But Arna Slott as well, he's never won a European trophy.
05:29Nearly did it with Feyenoord.
05:31So that would be something on his CV that he'll want to tick off and really prove that he is within the upper echelons of head coaches, managers in Europe.
05:42Because I think a lot of people agree he's up there now.
05:46But can he take himself to the next level?
05:48Can he really prove I am as good as what is else there?
05:51Can he really prove that he's in the upper echelons of the Champions League?
