00:00For close to a decade now, Alexa has been our go-to for simple voice commands like setting timers, checking weather forecasts, and streaming music playlists.
00:11But let's be honest, while handy, Alexa's capabilities have felt pretty limited compared to the rapidly advancing world of artificial intelligence.
00:18Well, that's all about to change.
00:20Amazon has major plans to transform Alexa into a truly intelligent, conversational AI assistant powered by large language models and generative AI technology.
00:30According to recent reports from sources close to the matter, Amazon is planning a major upgrade for Alexa by integrating generative AI.
00:39This means Alexa will become much more conversational and capable of engaging in natural back-and-forth discussions with users.
00:46Essentially, they want Alexa to handle everything we're currently doing with ChatGPT, and even more.
00:52Since Alexa is physically present, you don't have to grab your phone, open an app, and then start talking.
00:57With Alexa, you can just start talking right away.
01:00I have to admit, it's a lot more convenient.
01:01However, there's a catch.
01:03This new and improved Alexa won't be a free addition to your existing Amazon devices.
01:09Instead, Amazon is planning to introduce a monthly subscription fee specifically for the upgraded version of the voice assistant.
01:16Now, before you start worrying about your Amazon Prime membership, let me clarify that this subscription will be separate from Prime.
01:22You won't have to pay extra if you're already a Prime member.
01:25This move by Amazon really makes sense.
01:27They need to keep up with everyone else in the tech game, and nowadays, you can't stay in the loop without integrating more AI.
01:33Currently, most of us just use Alexa for simple stuff like setting timers, checking the weather, and playing tunes.
01:39But Amazon realizes that it's time for Alexa to advance and add more complex features to keep up with competitors like Google and OpenAI.
01:47Interestingly, there seems to be a shift in priorities within Amazon regarding Alexa.
01:52Since Andy Jassy took over as CEO from Jeff Bezos, Alexa has apparently become less of a focal point for the company.
01:59Insiders have reported that Jassy himself has expressed some disappointment with Alexa's current capabilities.
02:05Imagine being the CEO of Amazon and asking Alexa for the score of a recent game, only to be met with silence or an unsatisfactory response.
02:13So it's understandable why Jassy would want to see Alexa evolve and improve.
02:17This shift in priorities has put a lot of pressure on the Alexa team to improve the voice assistant and justify the resources Amazon has poured into it.
02:25The team has even gone through a major reorganization, with many members now working on Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI.
02:32Really? Trying to turn Alexa into an AGI? I'm not sure I'd want that.
02:36An AGI in my house, listening to everything I say while being smarter than me?
02:41That sounds a bit unsettling.
02:43What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
02:44I'm genuinely curious about other people's opinions on an AGI version of Alexa.
02:50All right, now upgrading Alexa with generative AI is actually a big challenge for Amazon.
02:55They need to attract top AI talent, which is tough because they're competing with tech giants like Microsoft and Google.
03:01Also, adding generative AI requires a lot of computing power and hardware, like each AI query could cost about two cents,
03:08and with hundreds of millions of daily interactions, that cost adds up fast.
03:12So that's why they're considering a monthly subscription fee to help cover the expenses of offering a high-tech AI assistant, which makes sense.
03:19The stakes are high for Amazon in the AI race.
03:22Alexa is already in hundreds of millions of homes worldwide, giving Amazon a huge chance to roll out a more advanced AI assistant to a large audience.
03:30But with this big opportunity comes the risk of any mistakes or glitches in Alexa's performance having serious consequences.
03:37People trust Alexa for basic tasks, and they'll expect the same reliability from the upgraded version.
03:43Now, to make this upgrade happen, Amazon plans to use its own large language model called Titan, which is in-house AI.
03:50Even Jeff Bezos, who stepped back from his CEO role, is worried about Amazon falling behind in the AI game.
03:57He's been reaching out to Amazon executives, asking why some AI startups are choosing other cloud providers over AWS.
04:04This shows just how fierce the competition is in the AI market and how crucial it is to stay ahead in innovation.
04:11As consumers, it's exciting to think about the possibilities of a more intelligent and engaging Alexa.
04:16Who wouldn't want a voice assistant that can not only handle basic tasks, but also engage in meaningful conversations, provide detailed information, and even assist with creative projects?
04:26Of course, the question of whether users will be willing to pay a monthly fee for these enhanced features remains to be seen.
04:32Amazon will need to demonstrate the value and utility of the upgraded Alexa to justify the additional cost.
04:39What do you think about Amazon's plans for Alexa?
04:42Would you be willing to pay a monthly subscription fee for access to these advanced features?
