00:00Steve, talk about you're in all the Boxing Hall of Fames.
00:06And I'm good friends with a lot of the guys that you've called fights with over the years.
00:12I remember when you did it with Chez and Ferdy and Sugar.
00:16But obviously, my friend Al Bernstein, the nightclub singer himself, the lounge singer,
00:26he loved you and your jokes, and I thought you and Bernstein together were as good as it gets.
00:35Well, thank you. You're very kind.
00:37Al was one of the best, if not the best, at dissecting a fighter's strengths and weaknesses and analyzing a fight.
00:46He can analyze a fight so fast.
00:48The nicest thing Al Bernstein ever did for me was get me Jerry Lewis's autograph.
00:54And I'll never forget that.
00:57I told him one time that I was a huge fan of Jerry Lewis as a performer.
01:03The first movie I ever saw in my life, I was about nine years old.
01:06My mother took me down to the theater.
01:08It was called At War with the Army with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.
01:13And I passed this on to Al.
01:16And little did I know that a good friend of his was Jerry Lewis.
01:20And it turned out that Jerry was a big fan of ours.
01:24He used to watch the fights all the time.
01:26So I gave him a cassette of that movie.
01:32He took it to Jerry and Jerry signed it.
01:34And Jerry did not sign many autographs.
01:36You know, he was a tough guy.
01:38And he really, he didn't get into that kind of stuff.
01:41But I was honored that he signed mine.
01:43So you did the Holyfield Tyson ear bite fight.
01:48And you've never seen anything like that, obviously.
01:51And I'd love to get your, your memories of that.
01:55And also the back in the day when you were at Kent State, everything that happened there.
02:00In fact, you did hockey play by play at Kent State.
02:04Yeah, I started the hockey team at Kent State.
02:08And yeah, we, I was there for a couple of years because they didn't build an arena until my junior year.
02:15And we wound up producing five play-by-play announcers into the NHL in just a matter of a few years.
02:22It was unbelievable.
02:23And you got me into the NHL.
02:25You did, you got me into the NHL.
02:27That's right.
02:28That's right.
02:28You, you did.
02:30Thrashers.
02:31The Flames.
02:32The Thrashers.
02:33Yeah, the Flames.
02:34What's the difference?
02:35The Thrashers.
02:36Atlanta.
02:36Yeah.
02:37After, after Battle Dome.
02:39Yeah.
02:39That's right.
02:40I remember that.
02:40I remember that.
02:42But yeah, we, we put Mike Thorns, Rick Peckham.
02:49Let's see.
02:50Paul Staggerwald into the NHL.
02:52That's my guy, Sox, who did it with Mike Lang.
02:56That's right.
02:56That's right.
02:57With the Penguins.
02:59I wound up doing the Islanders for a few years.
03:01In fact, I was very fortunate.
03:03I was with them for a couple of years.
03:06The first of the four straight Stanley Cups.
03:10I was working with Eddie Westfall and Stan Fischler.
03:14And it was one of the great experiences of my life.
03:16Yeah, Stan Fischler.
03:17Respectfully, I got one minute.
03:19Tell me your memories of the Holyfield ear bite.
03:22Oh, yes, yes, yes.
03:23I was so nervous going into that fight because I really thought something bizarre was going to happen.
03:32Little did I know that it was going to be that bizarre because in the past, Tyson had, you know, had already done some things, questionable things.
03:43But I didn't think he was going to bite Holyfield's ear, part of his ear off.
03:48And I was in shock when it happened.
03:54But, you know, the thing that I remember most was just announce the fight or announce what was going on as a reporter would.
