00:00So, Google updated its algorithm, and trust me, the internet will never be the same.
00:07This is one of the biggest changes happening in the online world right now,
00:11and it's not getting nearly enough attention.
00:14But this video is going to change all that.
00:16Alright, so if you've ever Googled something like air purifier reviews,
00:20you were probably looking for genuine content from experts.
00:23Take HouseFresh.com, for example.
00:26This site was started in 2020 by Giselle Navarro and her husband.
00:30who have been all about indoor air quality for years.
00:32They tested purifiers in their basement, wrote in-depth articles,
00:36and quickly shot to the top of Google's search results.
00:39They even grew to a team of 15 full-timers.
00:41But then everything changed last September when Google rolled out a massive algorithm update.
00:46Giselle says it was devastating.
00:48All those search terms that used to point people to HouseFresh started leading to big lifestyle mags instead,
00:54ones that don't even test the products properly.
00:56The info on those sites was often just plain wrong,
00:59and it didn't stop there.
01:01Another update in March this year hit them even harder.
01:04Their traffic plummeted from thousands of daily visitors to just hundreds.
01:08HouseFresh had to lay off most of their team,
01:10and if things don't change, they're looking at shutting down.
01:12Now, Google says they only make these changes after lots of testing to ensure they help users.
01:18They offer website owners resources and ways to give feedback about their rankings.
01:23Google believes these changes will benefit the web as a whole.
01:26And last week, Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, announced something even bigger.
01:30Google Search is getting a new AI feature called AI Overviews,
01:35which means Google will now give its own AI-generated answers to many of your questions.
01:40Pichai says this will make Search more helpful and efficient as it uses generative AI at an incredible scale.
01:46This shift from a search engine to a search and answer engine is a massive change.
01:50And not everyone is happy, obviously.
01:52Some critics are calling this an extinction-level event for small businesses that create your favorite content.
01:57Over the past two years, Google's updates have been meant to make Search more helpful.
02:01But many website owners who follow Google's best practices are feeling crushed.
02:05So, let's talk about SEO, Search Engine Optimization.
02:08It's a way to tune web pages to rank better on Google.
02:11Millions of businesses depend on it.
02:13But SEO can be abused.
02:15Some websites focus more on pleasing Google's algorithms than on providing quality content.
02:20We've all seen those spammy results when searching for something like
02:23best sneakers for women.
02:25You get flooded with sites full of ads and affiliate links, but no real info.
02:30To tackle this, Google ramped up its fight against low-quality, spammy content.
02:34In 2022, they launched a helpful content update to weed out such sites.
02:39More updates followed in September 2023 and March this year.
02:43Google claims these efforts have cut down low-quality content by 45%.
02:48They say the aim is to connect people with useful, satisfying,
02:51and original content from diverse sources.
02:54But the fallout has been intense.
02:55For instance, New York Magazine's traffic from Google Search dropped by 32%,
03:00GQ by 26%, and Urban Dictionary lost over half its traffic.
03:05Even OprahDaily.com saw a 58% drop.
03:08While these are just estimates from SEMrush, an analytics tool, they reflect real trends.
03:12And some website owners and SEO experts say it's been brutal.
03:15Meanwhile, Reddit has seen a massive boost.
03:18Their Google search traffic surged by 126%, and their revenue is up 48% from last year.
03:26People have been adding Reddit to their searches to get honest opinions instead of SEO-driven fluff.
03:31Google says they're surfacing content from communities like Reddit
03:35because people want to learn from others' experiences.
03:37They deny any special treatment for Reddit in their rankings.
03:40But with Google, if one site gains, another loses.
03:44And many small bloggers and website owners feel targeted.
03:47Daniel Hart from ReadySteadyCut says their traffic halved after the September update,
03:52and they've been hit hard by spam sites stealing their content.
03:55Despite following Google's advice, nothing has helped.
03:57Hart's team shrank from 20 writers and editors to just four.
04:00The biggest controversy, though, is about Google's new AI-generated answers.
04:04Google claims these AI overviews will actually boost traffic to websites
04:08by highlighting relevant links, but they haven't shared the data to back this up.
04:12Katie Berry from HousewifeHowTo's thinks people will stop visiting her site
04:16if Google's AI answers their questions.
04:19Her traffic dropped 70% after the 2022 update, and even more with the AI tests.
04:24Travel writer David Later has a similar story.
04:27A search for,
04:28best slot canyons near Las Vegas, used to bring up his article.
04:31Now it shows an AI-generated response that's mostly wrong.
04:35The AI lists places that aren't even slot canyons.
04:38Lighter's traffic has plummeted by 95%.
04:41Google admits their AI can provide inaccurate info, but says they're working to improve it.
04:45They also say publishers can control whether their sites are linked in AI overviews using special tags.
04:50But once AI scrapes your content, removing it can be nearly impossible.
04:54Now let's dive a bit deeper.
04:55Google's AI overviews use generative AI to summarize search results.
05:00This sounds great, right?
05:01But it's not foolproof.
05:02Recently, there have been some pretty wild AI mistakes.
05:05For example, Google's AI suggested eating rocks daily for minerals and vitamins and putting glue on pizza.
05:12These errors happen because AI doesn't know what's true.
05:15It just knows what's popular.
05:16So, if a satirical article from The Onion gets lots of attention, the AI might take it seriously.
05:22Google is trying to fix these issues, but it's like playing whack-a-mole.
05:26One problem pops up, they fix it, and another one appears.
05:29AI tools don't have our values.
05:31They're trained on huge chunks of the web, including all the bad stuff.
05:35While Google uses techniques like reinforcement learning from human feedback to weed out the worst,
05:40some biases and inaccuracies slip through.
05:43And with the massive push to be first in the AI race, Google might be moving faster than they should.
05:48This rush is risky.
05:50Google could lose the trust people have in it for providing reliable answers.
05:54If we stop clicking on links and just read AI summaries, Google's business model could take a hit.
05:59Plus, AI-generated content could lower the quality of the web overall.
06:04Now imagine this.
06:05AI tools might start training on their own outputs.
06:08This would be like humans breathing in their own exhaust fumes, bad news all around.
06:13It could amplify small errors and biases, making things even worse.
06:17Globally, billions are being invested in AI every day.
06:20Governments are just starting to think about regulations to ensure AI is used responsibly.
06:25Unlike pharmaceuticals or cars, tech companies haven't faced the same strict controls,
06:29but that might change soon.
06:30Google's aggressive push into AI is a response to competition from OpenAI and Microsoft.
06:36The financial stakes are enormous, and Google doesn't want to be left behind.
06:40But this haste comes at a cost.
06:42In 2023, Google's CEO Sundar Pichai mentioned how they've been cautious with AI,
06:48focusing on responsible use.
06:50Now it seems they're pushing AI out faster to keep up with rivals,
06:53potentially risking the quality and reliability they're known for.
06:56These AI-generated responses aren't just funny or weird, they can be dangerous.
07:02Misinformation about health, safety, and other critical topics can have serious consequences.
07:06And while Google works to fix these issues,
07:08the speed at which they're deploying AI makes it hard to keep up.
07:12Another major concern is the impact on content creators.
07:14Websites that provide detailed, accurate information are getting less traffic
07:18because Google's AI is taking over.
07:21This isn't just about losing visitors,
07:22it's about the potential decline in the quality of information available online.
07:27If creators can't sustain their work, we might see a drop in well-researched, high-quality content.
07:33Think about it.
07:34If the internet becomes filled with AI-generated content that recycles the same mistakes,
07:39our online experience will suffer.
07:41Accurate, human-generated content could become harder to find.
07:44We might look back at 2024 as the year the web started to decline,
07:49overtaken by synthetic, low-quality content.
07:52So, what does this mean for the future of search?
07:54It's clear that AI is here to stay and its role will only grow.
07:58But how it's integrated matters.
08:00Google's current approach has sparked a lot of debate
08:02about the balance between innovation and responsibility.
08:05They need to ensure their tools improve the user experience
08:09without sacrificing the quality and trustworthiness of information.
08:12It's also a wake-up call for regulators.
08:15Just like we have rules to keep harmful drugs off the market,
08:18we might need regulations to ensure AI is used responsibly.
08:22The stakes are high and the impact on society is significant.
08:26So, what do you guys think?
