00:00Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died on Monday after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest.

00:25But what typically happens when a Pope dies?

00:28As the world mourns, a quiet transformation begins at the heart of the Catholic Church in the Vatican.

00:35It's called Seder Vacante, Latin for the seat is empty.

00:40During this time, the Camarolengal confirms the Pope's death, a role both symbolic and administrative.

00:47In the past, he would gently tap the Pope's head with a silver hammer, calling his name three times,

00:54and if there is no response, the Pope is officially declared dead.

02:05White smoke means a new Pope has been chosen.

02:08The elected Cardinal is led to a private space known as the Rome of Tears, where he dresses in white robes for the first time.
