Today, Rupert learns that he's not in a game, in Rupert and the Happy Families.
00:16
There's a little bear that you've never seen before, who's a lot of fun.
00:23
Children everywhere, love him more and more, he's the number one.
00:30
There's a million stories to be told, of the things that he's done.
00:36
And he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.
00:44
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.
00:51
Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone come and join.
00:57
In all of his name.
01:05
It's a cold, wet day in Nutwood, and Rupert Bear is staying indoors.
01:10
Oh dear, I've played with all my toys, he says, looking at the heap he's just tidied up.
01:18
What can I do now?
01:21
I wonder who that can be.
01:23
Hello?
01:25
Yes, come in.
01:27
Leave your umbrella there.
01:29
And Mrs Bear ushers Bill Badger into the room.
01:33
Here's someone to play with you, dear, she says.
01:35
Hello, Bill.
01:38
Ooh, it's ever so wet out, Rupert.
01:42
But I wanted to come and play my new game with you.
01:45
My baby brother's too young, Bill adds.
01:48
Oh, good.
01:50
I was just wondering what to do next.
01:52
What is it?
01:53
He inquires.
01:55
It's a card game called Happy Families, explains Bill, showing Rupert the pack.
02:02
You have to collect four in a family.
02:06
Look, there's Mr Doe the baker, and Mrs Doe the baker's wife.
02:12
Oh, yes, and there's Master Doe and Miss Doe.
02:16
Let's play.
02:17
All right, I'll deal.
02:19
And when you ask for a card and I haven't got it, I say, not at home.
02:25
When you've had your game, I'll bring in some nice hot-buttered scones, says Mrs Bear, going to the kitchen.
02:33
The chums both settle down to play.
02:35
It's the best thing to do on a rainy day.
02:38
They collect the families one by one.
02:41
There's Master Thread, the tailor's son.
02:44
Look, Rupert, I've got all the Snip family, announces Bill.
02:49
Oh, yes, Mr Snip the barber.
02:52
Well, I've nearly got the Sweep family.
02:55
Master Smut, Miss Smut, Mrs Smut.
02:58
But where's Mr Smut?
03:00
Is he at home?
03:03
As Rupert looks at the Sweep's wife, she starts to talk to him.
03:08
No, he's not at home.
03:11
And I don't know what's happened to him, she says worriedly.
03:15
Oh, well, um, I'm looking for him too, says Rupert.
03:19
Very surprised to find himself outside Mrs Smut's cottage.
03:23
Good.
03:23
You can find him for me then.
03:26
He went to the card computer first thing this morning.
03:28
Of course, I'd like to help.
03:30
That's settled then.
03:32
See you later.
03:35
Hello there, Rupert.
03:37
What are you doing here?
03:39
It's Rupert's friend Jack in the Box.
03:42
Jack!
03:43
Oh, Jack, I'm so glad to see you.
03:46
I've got to find Mr Smut the Sweep.
03:49
All I know is that he went to the card computer this morning.
03:53
Well, I know that I've passed the house of cards on my way to Toyland.
03:57
They should be able to help you there.
03:59
Come on, I'll take you.
04:01
Rupert sits on, and with a leap and a bound, they're travelling fast.
04:05
They're covering ground.
04:06
They come to a gate, all chequered and square.
04:09
And a knight who demands of them.
04:12
Who is it there?
04:14
Rupert climbs off the box, and Jack pops up.
04:18
Gracious me, exclaims the knight, surprised.
04:21
Are you a new game?
04:24
No, laughs Jack.
04:25
This is Rupert there, and I'm Jack in the Box.
04:29
But I'm only on my way to Toyland.
04:31
It's Rupert who wants to see you.
04:33
He turns to Rupert.
04:35
I must go now.
04:36
I'm sure you'll find what you want here.
04:39
And he's off.
04:41
What is it you want?
04:43
I'm looking for the card computer, explains Rupert.
04:47
You see, I've got to find Mr. Smut the sweep.
04:51
We keep the card computer in here, in the house of cards.
04:55
But I can't open the gates at this time of day, until the king checks in.
04:59
And that may not be for ages yet.
05:02
Oh, please, it's very important, pleads Rupert.
05:06
Well, there is another way.
05:08
You'll have to tiddlywink over.
05:12
Tiddlywink over?
05:14
But how do I do that?
05:16
You sit on one of these first, he says, taking Rupert over to some flat disks.
05:23
Go on, then.
05:23
Rupert sits down warily.
05:26
And then I take another one like this, and go flip.
05:30
He presses the edge of Rupert's tiddlywink.
05:33
And Rupert finds himself sailing over the gate, and into a courtyard.
05:38
Oh, that was fun, he says, clambering off.
05:42
And there before him is the house of cards.
05:46
The computer must be inside.
05:50
But where is the way in?
05:53
Wonders Rupert.
05:54
Well, I suppose I'd better knock.
05:57
As he raises his hand, a shrill voice shouts out,
06:01
Don't do that!
06:01
Don't do that!
06:02
They'll all fall down!
06:04
Oh!
06:04
Um, well, how do I get in, then?
06:07
Through the Ace of Diamonds, of course, can't you see?
06:15
What do you want?
06:16
What do you want?
06:18
Rupert finds himself confronted by a joker from the pack of cards.
06:23
Oh, um, well, I want to ask the card computer something.
06:27
All right, follow me.
06:28
On a wall, Rupert sees a rack with all the happy family cards in it.
06:36
There you are.
06:37
You take out the one you want first.
06:40
Rupert looks along the rack.
06:43
Mr. Thread?
06:44
No.
06:45
Ah, here it is.
06:47
Mr. Smut the sweep.
06:49
This is the card computer.
06:50
Now put your card in this slot.
06:52
That's right.
06:53
Now in a minute, the screen will light up, telling you where Mr. Smut went.
06:57
The machine rumbles and pings, and there's Rupert's answer.
07:03
Mr. Smut, job for today, he reads.
07:07
Clean the chimney of Mrs. Stain, the dyer's wife.
07:12
There you are, then.
07:13
You see how useful this computer is?
07:16
Could you tell me how to get to Mrs. Stain's, please?
07:18
Asks Rupert.
07:20
Go outside.
07:21
Turn left.
07:22
Pass Mr. Pill the doctors.
07:24
Next on the right.
07:24
You can't miss it.
07:25
It isn't long before he sees Mrs. Stain's cottage.
07:32
He knows it's the right one, because she's just dyed a new batch of material, and it's
07:37
hanging out to dry.
07:39
But he sees something else, too.
07:42
The sweet brush is sticking out of the chimney, with a large crow hanging onto it.
07:49
Uh-oh, that's why Mr. Smut is late.
07:51
He's having a bit of trouble, says Rupert, as he goes to the door.
07:55
Deary me, deary me.
07:58
A very flustered Mrs. Stain is inside.
08:00
Can you help me, please?
08:03
Rupert follows her into the kitchen.
08:05
But all that he can see of Mr. Smut is a pair of legs.
08:09
Help!
08:10
Help!
08:11
He shouts.
08:12
I can't let go.
08:14
Something's pulling my broom.
08:16
Yes, it's a crow, Rupert tells him.
08:19
I'll try and get you down.
08:21
Oh, dear.
08:22
Oh, dear.
08:23
Mrs. Stain cries.
08:25
But all as Rupert might, he can't get Mr. Smut down.
08:30
Oh, what will we do?
08:31
Rupert tells her he will go outside and speak to the crow, who is still tugging madly on the broom.
08:40
You're pulling Mr. Smut up the chimney.
08:43
Let go at once, he demands.
08:46
In reply, the crow tugs harder than ever.
08:49
Rupert tries again, more kindly.
08:52
What's the matter?
08:54
Don't you like the brush?
08:56
The crow lets go to explain.
08:58
Inside, Mr. Smut falls with a bump into the fireplace.
09:05
Oh, that's better, he says with relief.
09:09
Outside, the crow shows Rupert the remains of a nest which has fallen down the roof.
09:16
Oh, I see.
09:23
You were building a nest on the chimney.
09:25
Rupert, says the crow in agreement.
09:30
Well, it wouldn't have been very nice when the fire was lit anyway.
09:34
How about one of my old dyeing tubs instead, suggests Mrs. Stain.
09:38
You could make a good nest in one of those.
09:41
Rupert, Rupert, Rupert.
09:44
The crow is quite happy with the idea.
09:48
Mr. Smut has gathered his brushes now and comes outside.
09:52
Thank you, Rupert, he says gratefully.
09:54
Now I can go for me lunch.
09:58
Mr. Smut.
10:00
Yes, Rupert, he's at home, says Bill.
10:03
Yes, I know.
10:05
He's very late for his lunch, though.
10:08
Mrs. Bear comes in with the tea things.
10:10
Lunch, Rupert?
10:12
You had lunch ages ago.
10:14
It's tea time now.
10:15
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:35
Everyone's in his name.
10:39
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:42
Everyone's come and join in all of his games.
10:49
Rupert, Rupert, the bell.
10:53
Everyone's come and join in all of his games.
11:04
Rupert.
