00:00Today, Rupert learns that he's not in a game, in Rupert and the Happy Families.

00:16There's a little bear that you've never seen before, who's a lot of fun.

00:23Children everywhere, love him more and more, he's the number one.

00:30There's a million stories to be told, of the things that he's done.

00:36And he's gonna share them all with you, so come along.

00:44Rupert, Rupert the Bell, everyone sing his name.

01:05It's a cold, wet day in Nutwood, and Rupert Bear is staying indoors.

01:10Oh dear, I've played with all my toys, he says, looking at the heap he's just tidied up.

01:18What can I do now?

01:21I wonder who that can be.

01:23Hello?

01:25Yes, come in.

01:27Leave your umbrella there.

01:29And Mrs Bear ushers Bill Badger into the room.

01:33Here's someone to play with you, dear, she says.

01:38Ooh, it's ever so wet out, Rupert.

01:42But I wanted to come and play my new game with you.

01:45My baby brother's too young, Bill adds.

01:48Oh, good.

01:50I was just wondering what to do next.

01:53He inquires.

01:55It's a card game called Happy Families, explains Bill, showing Rupert the pack.

02:02You have to collect four in a family.

02:06Look, there's Mr Doe the baker, and Mrs Doe the baker's wife.

02:12Oh, yes, and there's Master Doe and Miss Doe.

02:16Let's play.

02:17All right, I'll deal.

02:19And when you ask for a card and I haven't got it, I say, not at home.

02:25When you've had your game, I'll bring in some nice hot-buttered scones, says Mrs Bear, going to the kitchen.

02:33The chums both settle down to play.

02:35It's the best thing to do on a rainy day.

02:38They collect the families one by one.

02:41There's Master Thread, the tailor's son.

02:44Look, Rupert, I've got all the Snip family, announces Bill.

02:49Oh, yes, Mr Snip the barber.

02:52Well, I've nearly got the Sweep family.

02:55Master Smut, Miss Smut, Mrs Smut.

02:58But where's Mr Smut?

03:00Is he at home?

03:03As Rupert looks at the Sweep's wife, she starts to talk to him.

03:08No, he's not at home.

03:11And I don't know what's happened to him, she says worriedly.

03:15Oh, well, um, I'm looking for him too, says Rupert.

03:19Very surprised to find himself outside Mrs Smut's cottage.

03:23Good.

03:23You can find him for me then.

03:26He went to the card computer first thing this morning.

03:28Of course, I'd like to help.

03:35Hello there, Rupert.

03:37What are you doing here?

03:39It's Rupert's friend Jack in the Box.

03:42Jack!

03:43Oh, Jack, I'm so glad to see you.

03:46I've got to find Mr Smut the Sweep.

03:49All I know is that he went to the card computer this morning.

03:53Well, I know that I've passed the house of cards on my way to Toyland.

03:57They should be able to help you there.

03:59Come on, I'll take you.

04:01Rupert sits on, and with a leap and a bound, they're travelling fast.

04:05They're covering ground.

04:06They come to a gate, all chequered and square.

04:09And a knight who demands of them.

04:12Who is it there?

04:14Rupert climbs off the box, and Jack pops up.

04:18Gracious me, exclaims the knight, surprised.

04:21Are you a new game?

04:24No, laughs Jack.

04:25This is Rupert there, and I'm Jack in the Box.

04:29But I'm only on my way to Toyland.

04:31It's Rupert who wants to see you.

04:33He turns to Rupert.

04:35I must go now.

04:36I'm sure you'll find what you want here.

04:39And he's off.

04:41What is it you want?

04:43I'm looking for the card computer, explains Rupert.

04:47You see, I've got to find Mr. Smut the sweep.

04:51We keep the card computer in here, in the house of cards.

04:55But I can't open the gates at this time of day, until the king checks in.

04:59And that may not be for ages yet.

05:02Oh, please, it's very important, pleads Rupert.

05:06Well, there is another way.

05:08You'll have to tiddlywink over.

05:12Tiddlywink over?

05:14But how do I do that?

05:16You sit on one of these first, he says, taking Rupert over to some flat disks.

05:23Go on, then.

05:23Rupert sits down warily.

05:26And then I take another one like this, and go flip.

05:30He presses the edge of Rupert's tiddlywink.

05:33And Rupert finds himself sailing over the gate, and into a courtyard.

05:38Oh, that was fun, he says, clambering off.

05:42And there before him is the house of cards.

05:46The computer must be inside.

05:50But where is the way in?

05:53Wonders Rupert.

05:54Well, I suppose I'd better knock.

05:57As he raises his hand, a shrill voice shouts out,

06:01Don't do that!

06:02They'll all fall down!

06:04Oh!

06:04Um, well, how do I get in, then?

06:07Through the Ace of Diamonds, of course, can't you see?

06:15What do you want?

06:16What do you want?

06:18Rupert finds himself confronted by a joker from the pack of cards.

06:23Oh, um, well, I want to ask the card computer something.

06:27All right, follow me.

06:28On a wall, Rupert sees a rack with all the happy family cards in it.

06:36There you are.

06:37You take out the one you want first.

06:40Rupert looks along the rack.

06:43Mr. Thread?

06:44No.

06:45Ah, here it is.

06:47Mr. Smut the sweep.

06:49This is the card computer.

06:50Now put your card in this slot.

06:52That's right.

06:53Now in a minute, the screen will light up, telling you where Mr. Smut went.

06:57The machine rumbles and pings, and there's Rupert's answer.

07:03Mr. Smut, job for today, he reads.

07:07Clean the chimney of Mrs. Stain, the dyer's wife.

07:12There you are, then.

07:13You see how useful this computer is?

07:16Could you tell me how to get to Mrs. Stain's, please?

07:18Asks Rupert.

07:20Go outside.

07:21Turn left.

07:22Pass Mr. Pill the doctors.

07:24Next on the right.

07:24You can't miss it.

07:25It isn't long before he sees Mrs. Stain's cottage.

07:32He knows it's the right one, because she's just dyed a new batch of material, and it's

07:37hanging out to dry.

07:39But he sees something else, too.

07:42The sweet brush is sticking out of the chimney, with a large crow hanging onto it.

07:49Uh-oh, that's why Mr. Smut is late.

07:51He's having a bit of trouble, says Rupert, as he goes to the door.

07:55Deary me, deary me.

07:58A very flustered Mrs. Stain is inside.

08:00Can you help me, please?

08:03Rupert follows her into the kitchen.

08:05But all that he can see of Mr. Smut is a pair of legs.

08:09Help!

08:10Help!

08:11He shouts.

08:12I can't let go.

08:14Something's pulling my broom.

08:16Yes, it's a crow, Rupert tells him.

08:19I'll try and get you down.

08:21Oh, dear.

08:22Oh, dear.

08:23Mrs. Stain cries.

08:25But all as Rupert might, he can't get Mr. Smut down.

08:30Oh, what will we do?

08:31Rupert tells her he will go outside and speak to the crow, who is still tugging madly on the broom.

08:40You're pulling Mr. Smut up the chimney.

08:43Let go at once, he demands.

08:46In reply, the crow tugs harder than ever.

08:49Rupert tries again, more kindly.

08:52What's the matter?

08:54Don't you like the brush?

08:56The crow lets go to explain.

08:58Inside, Mr. Smut falls with a bump into the fireplace.

09:05Oh, that's better, he says with relief.

09:09Outside, the crow shows Rupert the remains of a nest which has fallen down the roof.

09:16Oh, I see.

09:23You were building a nest on the chimney.

09:25Rupert, says the crow in agreement.

09:30Well, it wouldn't have been very nice when the fire was lit anyway.

09:34How about one of my old dyeing tubs instead, suggests Mrs. Stain.

09:38You could make a good nest in one of those.

09:41Rupert, Rupert, Rupert.

09:44The crow is quite happy with the idea.

09:48Mr. Smut has gathered his brushes now and comes outside.

09:52Thank you, Rupert, he says gratefully.

09:54Now I can go for me lunch.

09:58Mr. Smut.

10:00Yes, Rupert, he's at home, says Bill.

10:03Yes, I know.

10:05He's very late for his lunch, though.

10:08Mrs. Bear comes in with the tea things.

10:10Lunch, Rupert?

10:12You had lunch ages ago.

10:14It's tea time now.
