00:00well normally on this uh zoom call i'm interviewing ugly rock stars with an uglier dj but this time

00:07around it's a lovely and talented karen newman how you doing karen i'm good now that i'm talking

00:12to you so everyone seems to be in an uproar what's going on are you coming back to the wings

00:18to sing the national anthem or what i mean all right listen i'm gonna give you the straight

00:23story and it's coming out of my mouth not out of her okay everybody and everybody can see it here

00:28so go ahead oh god okay so listen i'm not coming back uh if they there's a chance that they i don't

00:36after the article that was out they might not call me back even for a special game but if they do i'm

00:41happy to go down there just like we did last year you know meltdown they had me down for four really

00:46awesome games they were special games and i was very very honored again to be part of that i'm i

00:52don't intend or don't expect to get called at this point for the season unless there's a special

00:59occasion and i'm happy to go and see you know it's it's okay i had 30 plus years with these guys with

01:07this organization happy as hell every year to get the call to do it honored beyond belief and if it's

01:15time for them to do something new i'm i'm good at that i'm okay i don't i'm not bitter i'm not upset

01:23i'm not mad and i can say the word bittersweet that's different than being bitter i it is bittersweet

01:30i love the team i love the game always have since i was a little kid and and i love singing the anthem

01:39for them so it's bittersweet if i'm not down there for all those games it's a little bittersweet

01:43but i'm not bitter there's a major difference and i certainly don't feel like anybody ghosted me

01:49certainly not the red wings they've got a lot more important things to worry about than calling me

01:54honestly and this is honestly how i feel i'm a big girl if i don't get the call pretty smart too

02:01that means i'm not going right yeah so it's okay i had great years meltdown i had great years

02:08great memories part of the glory days nobody can ever take any of that away from me and you know

02:16i i'm proud of the work i did with them and and how i performed for them i was loyal and they were

02:23loyal to me too so you know one of the things that i said to the writer of the article one of the last

02:29things i said was i am forever grateful grateful to the detroit red wings organization and certainly to

02:36the illich family and i mean that with my whole heart yeah you know um you know everybody thinks

02:42i'm a karen i don't but uh you know it's funny because you said to me before we started you going

02:49i can't believe people think that you know big a deal about you know you're a detroit icon you've

02:54been doing this since before i got here and it's like you know and and people they go to the games and

03:00they want to hear this thing start up with your lovely voice well thank you and i appreciate that and i

03:05appreciate the fans and some of my followers and stuff who reached out to me and said that

03:09there but it's it's pretty 50 50 there are other people who quote unquote cringe when i sing but i

03:16can't make everyone happy really like the way i sing and that's okay too i'm glad that they probably

03:22have other people that they enjoy i also am excited that there's you know some some young singers out

03:28there who are coming up you know in the ranks and who are getting the opportunity to sing for this team

03:34it's exhilarating and i'm excited for them you don't meltdown i'm even getting messages from some

03:39of these uh young girls that are getting the job and they're asking for some advice and i love that

03:45like yeah yeah great i'm happy to say here's what you can do here's some tips and also good luck

03:52let me know how it goes you know i mean i i've had a good good career with these guys hey it led me to

04:01you guys i got to be the riff girl that's right yeah yeah we got that poster in the studio there's

04:07no i should have brought that in damn it i missed missed my chance here i have 5 000 of them if you

04:12know anybody you want to say that's so funny um that was one of the best things i ever got to do by

04:19the way i loved it yeah so listen i'll tell you what well i hope for one that you get to call back

04:24and that we see you at some of these games and if not like you said you you had a great time doing it

04:28and you know what you can always come and you can always come and sing at one of my events

04:31as a matter of fact you did one time on february 2005 when i played for the motor city mechanics

04:37oh my god yeah i used to sing with them sure that was fun yeah at a charity game or anything that

04:45you're involved in anything just give me a call you know i'm gonna be there now let me ask you about

04:50this uh we'll just switch topics here real quick and lighten things up just a bit what was it like

04:55touring uh with kid rock and bob seeger oh my god now you're talking about some of the best

05:01memories of my life and um both great bobs to work for great bobs um you know two very different

05:10tours the seeger tour was um you know very um well it was you know we flew everywhere it wasn't a bus

05:18tour like the kid rock tour but god i loved them both for different reasons and just to just to be

05:25able to work with these guys you talk about icons and legends and amazing performers 150 percent

05:31and we became a family i still have friends from both groups friends that i will have for life you

05:38know um i think fondly of both seager and kid rock um i love them to death i loved my time with them

05:46now that's a call i wouldn't mind getting again let me tell you well i need to go on too i think i

05:52might see somebody next week down uh down south uh for a couple days so you know i mean but i think

05:58i think he told me i think he told me he's semi-retired so we'll see what happens but uh

06:03i hope i hope that's true he's got he's got more to more to say he does he does have a lot more in

06:09the tank there's no question all right so final thing here for you plug your christmas events you

06:14have coming up what do you got coming up you're telling me oh okay great new song being released

06:19it's called motor city christmas um i'll send you a link to it okay um that's being released online

06:24on all the various places uh on november 1st i have a tv special for christmas showing on channel 7

06:32wxyz that's on christmas day um i think it's at one o'clock don't quote me um and then i've got my

06:40live show at onyama celebrity showroom out there uh in warren it's the first time i've been live since

06:47before covid oh really oh okay that's why i'm wearing a scarf i'm trying to i just finished

06:52my second round of covid so i'm trying to protect the voice and all of that uh so so my friend jade

06:59just walked in oh look what there she is

07:03oh i look good

07:08anyways well we had just a couple yeah thank you

07:15we just had to get you a plug yeah well it sounds like you have a lot coming on uh you know of course

07:23uh even if you're even if you don't do any wings games you have a lot in your uh in your schedule

07:27and uh we appreciate you taking time to uh talk with us and good luck and everything and of course
