00:00These elderly elephants at a zoo in Barcelona are being well taken care of in their old age.

00:09Geriatric care for animals is becoming increasingly important for zoos,

00:13and Old Suzy and Bully, these two female African elephants, are no exception.

00:19Obviously, animals with older and geriatric age,

00:26are animals that come from other centers that have had problems.

00:30It requires more exhaustive care if they are much more above them.

00:35Animals that come from centers in a circus,

00:39or centers that have not had a maintenance of training or management of a correct way.

00:45There's been a wider trend in recent decades

00:48where zoos have begun emphasizing conservation through learning how to adapt to the needs of aging animals

00:53that can't be released safely back into the wild.

00:57In Barcelona, zookeepers are taking extra care to monitor how Suzy and Bully cope

01:02following the recent death of their long-time companion.

01:06Suzy, at 52, is now among the oldest known African elephants in captivity.

01:12Besides the elephants, Barcelona Zoo is also home to other aging animals,

01:16including a 15-year-old wolf, a flock of senior flamingos, and this 17-year-old giraffe.
