Australian Catholics attend special mass services to mourn Pope

Catholics in Australia have attended church services to mourn the death of Pope Francis. The 88-year-old being remembered by many as a man of humility.

00:00Just days ago, these pews were filled with parishioners for Easter.

00:07Now, across the nation, people gather to mourn the death of a Pope.

00:11He was making appearances, also made appearance on Easter Sunday,

00:15so then to hear that he'd died was a shock.

00:20We were confident that he was regaining some health,

00:24so it was, yeah, a great shock.

00:26Mourners remembering the pontiff as a progressive leader.

00:30Very passionate about the environment.

00:33The best Pope we've had for women for many, many years.

00:37The care for the poor, the care for the environment and love,

00:43expressed for the unprivileged and people who are in need.

00:47And as a man of humility.

00:49He lived in a guest house in a simple room.

00:52I've stayed in those rooms myself.

00:54He was a man of the people, I know that's a bit of a cliché.

00:57I think the Pope always practised what he preached,

01:01and it's very difficult when you're in a position of power to be like that.

01:06Qualities that for many will be sorely missed.

01:09They saw a man of deep humanity, a man of great interest and concern

01:14in the wellbeing of people.

01:16So I think there's a sense of loss.

01:18Those gathering hope his successor will have a similar approach.

01:22But we know that God will choose someone that will replace him

01:26and will lead our church in the right direction.

01:29We need someone who, by their own humility,

01:33might be able to show to others the way to Christ.
