Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Italian immigrants – a father who was a railway worker and a mother homemaker.
Bergoglio grew up in a modest environment where he was able to develop a strong sense of community as he was able to see up-close the struggles of his less fortunate neighbors.
As such, he grew up treasuring values of humility and service, which would guide him throughout his life.
