00:05Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Easter Monday.
00:11Bells tolled in church towers across Rome after the announcement,
00:15which was read out by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican Camerlengo,
00:19from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.
00:23The Pope had suffered from a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia,
00:27for which he was hospitalized for five weeks.
00:30He emerged on Easter Sunday to bless thousands of people in St. Peter's Square
00:35and surprise them with a popemobile ride through the piazza.
00:39The Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the first Latin American pontiff in history
00:44and charmed the world with his humble style and embrace of refugees and the poor.
00:49He signaled a very different tone for the papacy,
00:52stressing humility over hubris, adding women to decision-making roles in the church
00:57and welcoming the LGBTQ plus community.
