00:00We're counting down the best rock albums of 1984.
00:09Our list includes legends and newcomers, thrash metal, and college rock.
00:14At number 10 is Bon Jovi's self-titled debut.
00:16Back then, they seemed like another pop-metal band.
00:19Little did we know they'd still be headlining stadiums decades later.
00:22The Scorpion's love at first sting was their ninth album, and our number nine.
00:26But thanks to monster hits like Rock You Like a Hurricane, Big City Nights, and the ballad
00:30Still Loving You, it made them superstars in the U.S.
00:34Number eight is Queen's The Works, which, as its name implies, has a bit of everything.
00:39Rockers like Hammer to Fall, and pop hits like I Want to Break Free and Radio Gaga.
00:43The latter song inspired Lady Gaga's name.
00:46The Cars' Heartbeat City comes in at number seven.
00:49It had some of their biggest hits, including Hello Again, Magic, Drive, and You Might Think.
00:55R.E.M. was one of the weirdest bands to get on the radio in 1984, but their album Reckoning
00:59was undeniable.
01:01Thanks to songs like So, Central Rain, and Don't Go Back to Rockville, it's our number
01:05six album.
01:06At number five is Rush's tenth album, Grace Under Pressure.
01:09With songs like Distant Early Warning and Red Sector A, they showed that they were still
01:13going strong after more than a decade.
01:16U2 made the jump from alternative rockers to arena headliners with The Unforgettable
01:20Fire, our number four album.
01:22Pride in the Name of Love and Bad remain two of their biggest crowd pleasers at their shows.
01:27Thrash Metal hadn't yet hit the mainstream, but Metallica began to change that in 1984
01:31with Ride the Lightning.
01:32For Whom the Bell Tolls and their first ballad Fade to Black were undeniably great and are
01:36two reasons why the album is our number three.
01:40Number two.
01:41Van Halen was a huge rock band, but 1984 and Jump made them into pop superstars.
01:46They didn't lose any rock crud though, nor should they have, with classics like Hot
01:49for Teacher, Panama, and I'll Wait.
01:53Bruce Springsteen also went from rock star to pop star in 84.
01:57Our number one album of the year, Born in the USA, had something for everyone.
02:01With classics like Cover Me, I'm on Fire, Dancing in the Dark, and of course the epic
02:04title track.
02:07That's our list!
02:08What did we miss?
