The King and Queen attended Durham to attend the Royal Maundy Service which takes place every year on the Thursday before Good Friday.
Transcript
00:00Hundreds of people flocked to the centre of Durham to welcome King Charles and Queen Camilla who were here to attend the Royal Monday service at Durham Cathedral.
00:09The roads were closed off throughout the city to allow them both to travel up to the cathedral safely.
00:14The King arrived shortly after 11 o'clock in a state car, a burgundy Rolls Royce, as they waved to onlookers before entering the cathedral.
00:22Royal Monday takes place each year on the Thursday before Easter Sunday.
00:26It's a service where the King expresses his gratitude to those who serve and volunteer in their communities.
00:32The ceremony dates back centuries when the sovereign would distribute arms to the poor.
00:36I caught up with locals who attended this historical event.
00:40Popped down to see the King, going up to the cathedral.
00:46I saw the Queen many years ago, I'm not telling you my age, but many years ago I saw the Queen.
00:52And it was lovely to repeat it again today, to see the King.
00:57It's very special. I'm sure he's had a nice view of Durham going through.
01:03We're here to try and have a look at the King and also just have a look at the people going into the cathedral and to listen to the brass band.
01:12Are you still having a good time?
01:14Yeah, I really, really liked it, but we were there for about two hours, for almost two hours.
01:24We arrived at about 9.16 or 15.
01:30We're having a great time. It's been a bit of a wait, but it's still quite fun.
01:35Yeah.
01:36Yeah.
01:37Oh, I think the atmosphere has been really good. We were quite near the front.
01:42We met some friends and work colleagues and we all came together.
01:46And then there were students around us, there were international students, there were just local people.
01:50Just really nice, really good, you know, really good-natured.
01:53Yeah.
01:54Enjoyed it.
01:55Quite early.
01:56Yeah, it was quite early. We were probably here for quarter past eight, something like that.
02:03But we weren't the first. There were lots of people further down.
02:06Yeah.
02:07Yeah, we've enjoyed it. It's a shame that we didn't actually, we didn't really see him.
02:11We saw the back of his head. But the band was good and, you know, we enjoyed that.
02:16But we're heading off over there because we think if he goes out the same way he came in, at least then we'll get to see him.
02:22Yes.
02:23And he might even come and talk to us. You never know.
02:25You never know.
02:26After the service, once the pressure's off.
02:28Yes.
02:29Maybe.
02:30We know the dignitaries were out there, you know, talking to us.
02:33We were surprised to see the beefeaters. We weren't expecting them.
02:36The who?
02:37The beefeaters.
02:38The beefeaters.
02:39Yeah, there were beefeaters at the door.
02:41Yes.
02:42I mean, I didn't get a photograph of them, but your friend did, didn't she?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Yeah.
02:48That was a surprise, didn't we?
02:49Maybe something special to do with maybe Maundy Thursday.
02:53You know, routine.
02:54Yeah, I don't think routine he travels with me.
02:55No, I don't think he does.
02:56Who knows?
02:57Yes.
02:58Yes.
