Welcome to a fascinating story of how the Netherlands turned a polluted lake into a clean and peaceful place for nature. In this video, we explore IJsseloog, also called the “Eye of IJssel,” a giant round pit built in the middle of Ketelmeer Lake. This pit was made to safely store dangerous mud filled with toxic waste that had built up over many years from factories in Europe.
Between 1950 and 1990, harmful chemicals from rivers like the Rhine and IJssel settled at the bottom of the lake, creating thick layers of polluted silt. Instead of dumping this sludge on land, Dutch engineers built IJsseloog – a safe underwater storage pit with strong barriers to stop leaks. It is 1 km wide, 45 meters deep, and now blends with the lake, turning into a home for birds and nature.
In this video, we’ll show you how IJsseloog was made, why it was needed, and how it looks today – peaceful, green, and full of wildlife. Watch this incredible example of how humans can fix damage to the environment and help nature come back to life.
