00:00In our last discussion, we explained what active listening is not.

00:09We defined what active listening is.

00:14And we discussed the first key strategy to improve active listening.

00:21In today's discussion, we will talk about the second, third, fourth and the fifth key strategies

00:35to improve active listening.

00:38Remember, the first key strategy to improve active listening is give full attention.

00:49After giving the speaker full attention, what else should you do?

00:59You should apply the second key strategy to improve active listening, which is show that

01:07you are listening.

01:11When a speaker is speaking, show that you are listening.

01:16It's not enough just to keep quiet when the speaker is speaking.

01:23It makes some speakers feel as if they are pouring water on a storm.

01:29But prove to the speaker that you are listening.

01:33And how can you do that?

01:35You can do that by nodding occasionally and through your facial expression.

01:45But be careful.

01:46Do not nod excessively.

01:48Just be natural and moderate.

01:52You can also use verbal affirmations to show that you are listening.

01:59You can use words like, I see, wow, that makes sense, go on, I'm listening.

02:07All these are verbal affirmations to prove or to show that you are listening.

02:16One of my colleagues complained that when he is speaking, his wife always interrupts him.

02:27And when his wife interrupts when he is speaking, his wife mostly makes wrong conclusions.

02:35And the wrong conclusions lead to disputes, quarrel, and misunderstanding in their relationship.

02:45And my friend told me that whenever his wife interrupts him, he feels like he has wasted

02:51his time trying to articulate his words.

02:58So when a speaker is speaking, avoid interrupting the speaker.

03:05Avoid finishing the sentences of the speaker.

03:09You are not respecting the speaker by interrupting him.

03:11You are not respecting him by finishing his sentences.

03:16Avoid those things.

03:17Let the speaker finish his sentences.

03:20Let the speaker exhaust his thoughts before you call him.

03:27What is the third key strategy to improve active listening?

03:32The third key strategy to improve active listening is seek to understand, not just to respond.

03:43When a speaker is speaking, seek to grasp the message the speaker is trying to deliver, not

03:50just to respond, but try to understand what the speaker is saying.

03:57And you have to pause on grasping the message of the speaker rather than preparing your own

04:02reply.

04:05Sometimes when I am talking, my friend will be busy calculating what he wants to say.

04:12know and when he does this he ends up losing the message that i'm trying to deliver he gets

04:20distracted with his own thoughts and lose the message that i'm trying to deliver

04:29even if you don't understand what a speaker is saying you can seek for understanding by

04:35asking open-ended question to clarify to understand what the speaker is saying

04:47okay you have given the speaker full attention you have shown the speaker that you are listening

04:56and you have understood what the speaker is saying

04:59what else should you do apply the fourth key strategy to improve active listening which is

05:09paraphrase and reflect in your own words say back what the speaker said to you in your own words

05:19and sentences summarize what the speaker just said reflect on the emotions of the speaker

05:29when you paraphrase when you summarize what the speaker has just said in your own words you are

05:36proving to the speaker that you have understood what he's saying you have confer you are confirming to

05:44the speaker that you have grasped the message that the speaker is trying to deliver

05:50what if you don't understand the message the speaker is trying to deliver what should you do apply the

06:03fifth key strategy to improve active listening the fifth key strategy to improve active listening is

06:12ask thoughtful questions if you don't understand a speaker ask thoughtful question related to what the speaker is saying

06:26dig deeper with relevant question not out of points but related with what the speaker is saying

06:32avoid judgmental or leading questions remember your intention is to understand the message the speaker is trying to deliver

06:44not to judge or to or not to judge the speaker but to understand what the speaker is trying to say

06:52and when you ask thoughtful questions what do you avoid you avoid misunderstanding and making wrong conclusion

07:04if you don't ask questions there is a high tendency high likelihood that you make wrong conclusion

07:11and this will bring about misunderstanding and misunderstanding will bring about quarrel and dispute

07:17so to avoid all these things ask thoughtful questions

07:24so far we have discussed the first second third fourth and the fifth key strategies to improve active listening
