I gotta say, this was the best experience I had in all 2025.
00:03
You have the best one-liner in the whole movie.
00:07
There's no bad spirits.
00:08
It's vampires.
00:10
Oh, God.
00:11
My whole row roared.
00:15
That's such a great line.
00:17
My whole row roared.
00:21
So my first question is, when you're saying that line on set,
00:24
are you aware of the effect that's going to happen in the audience?
00:27
And does that change at all the way you say it?
00:30
It's so funny because that whole scene with the door and the thing,
00:36
there was a lot of laughs.
00:37
It's such a great question.
00:39
I think there's moments that in delivery, we find it funny,
00:44
and we're like, okay, that's a great line.
00:47
Or we find it cool.
00:47
Find it cool or whatever, but we never really, really know
00:50
if the audience is going to react to it the way you did.
00:54
And that's the joy of it, I guess, not really knowing.
00:56
But in the moment, it feels right.
00:58
It feels right for the character, it feels right for the moment.
01:00
Michael and Miles were teasing each other.
01:03
It was hilarious.
01:05
And then, I can't remember, but I felt like it was a one-take shot.
01:09
I feel like it was.
01:10
And I don't know.
01:11
And then they were like, okay, we got it.
01:13
And I was like, oh, really?
01:14
Yeah.
01:14
I thought that was the rehearsal, but okay, I guess we got it.
01:19
So I think, right after she did that line, another line you're talking about,
01:22
I think she smiled.
01:25
So we used every frame before she kind of smiles and shrugs,
01:30
like, was that it?
01:33
But yeah, yeah, it's a great, because she's out of breath.
01:36
There's a lot of shit going on.
01:38
Yeah, it's great.
01:38
Do some, you know what I'm saying, some garlic or whatever.
01:41
I got to meet your work on True Grid, right?
01:56
And you had an accent as well in that film.
01:58
So I was wondering, did you learn something about the way
02:01
or the things you can do with your voice on True Grid
02:03
that somehow carried all the way through Sinners?
02:05
Oh, it's so funny you bring that up,
02:08
because I felt like for so many reasons,
02:13
my experience working on Sinners reminded me so much
02:17
of my experience on True Grid, again, for so many reasons.
02:20
But that may have just sort of been out there in the universe,
02:23
that that was one of them.
02:24
I think what that taught me, though, was to listen.
02:29
I was able to pick up on what was around me at the time.
02:35
And that was, I think, the most helpful thing,
02:39
was to just sort of immerse myself into the world.
02:42
We shot that movie in Texas and New Mexico,
02:46
and there was just a great range of what they were looking for
02:49
as far as the dialect.
02:51
With this, we worked with the most incredible dialect coach,
02:54
and she broke it down and made it fun,
02:57
because that's something that, like,
02:58
you're looking at a sheet that looks like you can't break it down
03:02
unless somebody's breaking it down for you.
03:04
And she made it so easy to digest and so much fun,
03:07
and it was a history lesson more than anything.
03:10
And to be around my castmates, too,
03:14
that so beautifully nailed these dialects was very helpful.
03:19
I love it.
03:20
And I love that your relationship goes back to Fruitvale.
03:23
And I really wanted to ask you,
03:24
is there something you guys learned about each other
03:26
back in Fruitvale that somehow carried through
03:28
all the way through Sinners?
03:30
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:31
I think working with Mike back then, man,
03:38
it was 13 years ago.
03:43
Wow, 13 years ago.
03:44
You know, like, I think that he, very much like an athlete,
03:54
can get into, like, a heightened place.
04:00
Like, he's always great,
04:02
but there are times where, you know,
04:05
he can get into, like, the quote-unquote zone.
04:07
And me noticing those moments
04:12
and really making sure that everybody's locked in,
04:15
the crew is locked in, nobody's interrupting him.
04:18
You know, maybe we can do longer takes
04:19
when he's at a point like that and not want to, you know,
04:23
it happens with every actor, every type of performer,
04:26
every type of person that does anything.
04:28
But I have a very keen insight
04:31
to what is happening with him
04:32
from working with him for so long.
04:35
And that's when you can get some really, really, like,
04:38
really, really, like, special,
04:40
transcendent, memorable stuff.
04:49
I love it.
04:49
And Miles, I've got to tell you,
04:51
I've been listening to your single
04:52
ever since I got to see that, the screening.
04:56
So my question is,
04:57
does the way Miles sing
04:59
somehow informs the way Sam sing?
05:01
And does the way Sam sang
05:03
has somehow influenced
05:05
the way Miles is going to sing from now on?
05:08
I would say for this one,
05:10
I listened to a lot of old blues artists
05:13
to kind of, you know,
05:14
bring myself back in that time.
05:16
So I feel like I aged my voice a little bit,
05:19
but I felt like
05:20
it also became so natural
05:22
that I'm, you know, incorporating it
05:24
into some of my stuff now.
05:26
So just to have that opportunity
05:28
to be able to learn about,
05:30
you know, those different styles
05:32
and different genres of music,
05:33
it was, you know, incredible.
05:34
My final question would be,
05:36
I know it's really a really personal film to you.
05:38
Yeah.
05:38
So, and you talk about your uncle.
05:41
So I was wondering,
05:43
and I mean, no disrespect,
05:44
but if you had the chance
05:45
to show the movie to your uncle,
05:47
what would be the part
05:48
that you'd be most excited about for him to see?
05:50
I'll show him all of it,
05:51
you know what I mean?
05:51
Like, it's a movie he would love,
05:53
you know?
05:54
He didn't really go to the movies.
05:56
That's what's crazy.
05:57
He listened to Bulls records at home,
05:58
but he would go see my movies,
05:59
you know?
06:01
So, yeah, like I wrote it with him,
06:04
you know, with him in mind,
06:05
you know, so like,
06:06
I think he would,
06:06
I think he would like all of it.
06:08
Like, I kind of believe
06:08
he's there when we watch it,
06:10
you know, personally.
06:11
I can feel the love.
06:12
Guys, thank you very much.
06:13
My time is coming up,
06:14
but thank you very much for the best,
06:15
one-liner,
06:16
best bumper movie,
06:17
all 2025.
06:17
I'm telling you,
06:18
I can't wait to tell everyone.
06:20
Thank you very much, guys.
