Bernie Sanders Celebrates AOC, Uses Her Story To Encourage Voters To Challenge 'The Establishment'

At a "Fight Oligarchy Tour' event in Salt Lake City, Utah on Sunday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spoke about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-NY) campaign success and encouraged other Americans to seek office.

00:00You know, Alexandria mentioned a moment ago that we were in L.A. yesterday and we had 36,000 people out.

00:12But in many ways, the 20,000 we have out today is more impressive.

00:18And we're here in so-called conservative Utah, and tomorrow we're going to be in Idaho.

00:35Oh, because we believe that in every state of this country, people are prepared to stand up and fight back.

00:52Now, I want to say a word about my daughter.

00:57Now, I want to say a word about Alexandria and why what she's doing is so important.

01:08And here's the story.

01:11Six years ago, six years ago, what were you doing for a living?

01:21She was a waitress.

01:27But she looked around her, and she saw a society that was fundamentally unjust

01:36and in many ways ugly to the people in the community in which she lived in New York City.

01:44She stood up and took on one of the most powerful people in the House of Representatives.

01:50And she started with almost no money against the guy who had unlimited funds, and she beat him.

02:07That's it.

02:09Now, why do I tell you that story?

02:14It's not just to talk about Alexandria.

02:16The point that I am making is that in this arena of 15,000 people, there are hundreds of Alexandrias.

02:30There are hundreds of Alexes and Joes and Marys and Cynthia's.

02:36And all across this country, we are going to need people to go outside of their comfort zone.

02:54Because the establishment, man, they are smart.

03:05They are so smart.

03:07And one of the smartest things they do, one of the most effective things they do,

03:13is to say to all of you and working people all over America,

03:17hey, we got the money, we got the power, we own it all,

03:23you ain't nothing, nothing you're going to do about it.

03:30And a lot of people sit back and they say, what am I going to do?

03:33Can't do nothing.

03:35All right, my boss is going to fire me, this, that, and the other thing.

03:38And that is the mindset we have got to break through.

03:44All right, my boss.

03:54But it's not AOC, and it's not Bernie, it is you.

04:24You don't need leaders.

04:29We need a mass movement of millions of people.

04:41Now, the reason that Alexandria and I have been running around the country is because, as all of you know,

04:50and she so eloquently stated, we are living in the most dangerous moments in the modern history of this country.

05:01And I really, especially to the young people, I wish I could not have to tell you that.

05:07You know? But it is just simply true.
