00:08In this series we will learn about isotopes.

00:13Atoms of the same element which have the same atomic number but different mass numbers are called isotopes.

00:21Since the atomic number of different isotopes of the same element is the same,

00:26it means that they have the same number of electrons and protons.

00:32The difference in their mass numbers is due to different number of neutrons present in their nuclei.

00:40As an illustration, here is a hydrogen atom.

00:45The nucleus of a hydrogen atom consists of a proton, this nucleus is surrounded by an electron.

00:53Thus the atomic number and mass number of hydrogen are one.

01:00In addition to hydrogen, there is also deuterium.

01:05There is an additional neutron in its atomic nucleus.

01:10Since it still has the same number of electrons and protons, the symbol for deuterium is the same as the symbol for hydrogen.

01:19It's just that its mass number changes to two.
