00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Friday afternoon.
00:35I hope it's not too frosty where you are and that you brought your lucky charm to take on our champion and challenger.
00:41Let's start by introducing the team. We've got the snap of Dr Tom Crawford.
00:45We've got the crackle of Susie Dent and we've got the pop of Jenny Powell.
00:49Well, as you might have guessed, you're getting a bit of a theme to the intros now, Jenny.
00:56It's National Serial Day today.
01:00And I don't know, do you think we're still cereal fanatics, Jenny, compared to back in the day?
01:05No, I don't think so. I think we just about soak our ropes, but we don't do much cereal anymore.
01:10And I'm quite happy about that, to be fair.
01:12Have you stopped eating cereal in favour of the eggs benedict and the avocado toast and all that?
01:17Lots of smashed avocado all over the kitchen.
01:19Yeah. And a good egg. You can't beat a good egg.
01:22Listen, it's crunch time, isn't it, for our captain here.
01:26Seven wins so far.
01:27Tim James going for Octo-Champ today, our second of Series 91.
01:31How are you feeling, my friend?
01:32Yeah, good. Thank you.
01:33Yeah.
01:33Brilliant.
01:33You're up against Annette Swain, who is, I think, in Yorkshire, but obviously originally from Scotland.
01:39And the accent's a little bit mixed up, isn't it?
01:42Yeah.
01:42Yeah, I came to Yorkshire when I was 10.
01:45You're loving retirement. You're painting.
01:47What type of painting do you do?
01:49I do pastel painting and I like doing animals, but I've done my three granddaughters and I feel like pastel painting is cheating, really, because you just can blend it.
02:06And if it's not right, just like that weird finger and do a bit more, then it's good.
02:12Excellent. Well, listen, let's see what happens today.
02:15Annette and Tim, have a really good afternoon both.

04:55Hi, Manning and Nett.
05:12A risky eight.
05:14And, Tim, a risky eight as well.
05:17What's your word, Nanette?
05:18Miss-tried.
05:19Tim, mortist.
05:21Um, OK, so mortist is absolutely fine to join together by using a mortis and tenon, but
05:28there is, unfortunately, there's a mistrial, but there is no mistrial, mistried.
05:34I'm sorry about that.
05:35Sorry, Nanette.
05:36Unlucky, Nanette.
05:37Unlucky.
05:38It's worth a go because Tim's eight counted, you know.
05:41Really nice letters.
05:42There's loads going on.
05:43Talk to me, Jenny.
05:44Dirties.
05:45LAUGHTER
05:46You said that just at the right time.
05:48I'm going to talk to you dirties.
05:49There you go.
05:50It's dirties talking.

06:55Yes, 157.
06:56Er, Dr Tom, just so you know, this is what Rachel would call a no-ink round.
07:01But it's totally up to you.
07:02Tim, off you go.
07:03Er, 50 times three is 150.
07:05Yep.

09:24Bang to rights as we head over to dictionary corner and Jenny Pyle.
09:27Yeah, they're saying.
09:29Can't put the extra R on, can't be a parola.

10:18So, let me them go, Valentine.
10:20I will see you.
10:21I really want to see you in one episode.
10:23And thanks to you greetings and things.
10:25Thank you for свое green, thank you very much, Representative Boeck, who bless you and allemaal.
10:27But about him, it seems very honestly.
10:28I don't hate you too much.
10:29Even if you like me a place where I go away.
10:30Please.
10:31The way we start to come back tomorrow.
10:32I can write a question before you is like, I do not forget this, what you even can do?
10:33MUSIC PLAYS
10:48Tim, six. And for you, Nanette? Six.
10:52Difficult round, is, Tim? Sponge.
10:55Sponge for you, Nanette? Sponge.
10:58There you go. Couple of sponges here, what about Dictionary Corner?
11:02Well, yeah, we just sucked it all in, all the info, and we came out with nonages.
11:06Nonages. We had this not that long ago.
11:08Yes, opposite of dotages, which is when you're in your older age,
11:12so nonages is when you're in your youth.
11:14OK. Numbers for you, Nanette, you're choosing just eight points behind.
11:19Kind of too large for a small. Absolutely, Nanette.
11:22Thank you very much.
11:244, 5, 2, 9, 75, 25.
11:33And we are aiming for 467.
11:36467. Numbers up.
11:388, 20, 51, 55, and 4, 5, 6, 5, 5, 6, 5, 6.
11:52Newenan
11:535, 7, 6, 16, 6, 8, 8, 7, 9, 7, 8, 9, 7, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10.
11:584, 6, 7, the target, Nanette.
12:114, 6, 6.
12:12One away and 10.
12:144, 6, 6, not written down.
12:16You'll have to go first then, Tim.
12:184 plus 2 is 6.
12:204 plus 2 to give you 6.
12:23Multiply by 75.
12:244, 5 times your 75 will indeed give you 4, 50.
12:28Add 25 for 4, 7, 5.
12:31Plus 25, 4, 7, 5.
12:33And then take off 9.
12:34Yep, 4, 6, 6.
12:35Lovely.
12:36Same for you, Nanette.
12:37How do you do it?
12:385 times 75 plus 25 equals 500.
12:44Yep, 75 plus 25 for the 100.
12:46Multiply by 5 for the 500.
12:484 times 9 is 36.
12:504 times 9 is 36.
12:52Minus the 2 is 34.
12:55Minus 2 is 34.
12:57And take it off the 500.
12:59And then subtract those two.
13:00That will give you 4, 6, 6.
13:02Yes, so whatever way you scan it, we then get 4, 6, 7.
13:07I didn't even get within 1.
13:09How did you get on?
13:09I'm also 1 away, but I'm going to solve this one.
13:13Okay, good.
13:13Happy days.
13:144, 6, 7.
13:16As we break the talk for the last time this week to Jenny Pyle.
13:20Stop trying to do the numbers, Jenny.
13:21Here we go.
13:21No problem.
13:23Right, listen, it's just a free range today.
13:25And you've done so much in your career.
13:27But maybe back towards, you know, like, what sticks in your mind in terms of those superstars
13:32you've interviewed?
13:32Because you've done a lot more of that than people would think, I reckon, especially
13:36because you're a proper radio head as well.
13:38Yes.
13:39And you do a lot of live events.
13:40So I've interviewed people like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
13:46Sylvester Stallone just had so many offers for Rocky.
13:50Yeah.
13:51And he could have had a really nice pile of money, but he said, no, if I don't star in
13:55it, you're not buying it.
13:56That's it.
13:57And he held out, and he held out, and he eventually got the deal.
14:00And that's it.
14:00Some people don't realise that with Rocky.
14:02No.
14:03He's an unknown.
14:04I think he went to all the producers with, like, $140 in his pocket.
14:08Yeah.
14:08He had to sell his dog to get to Hollywood to sell the movie.
14:12Heartbreaking.
14:13And then he bought the dog back.
14:14He told me this.
14:15He said he actually bought the dog back when he made the movie.
14:20And the guy that bought the dog off him said, right, if you buy it back, I'll charge you
14:24three times as much, but also I want to be in the movie.
14:27And he appeared in the movie.
14:28No.
14:29Yes.
14:29Yeah, sort of ringside.
14:31He's got one line.
14:32It's so interesting.
14:33Jenny, that's you just blowing my mind.
14:35Sorry, yeah.
14:35I'm the king of useless knowledge like that.
14:38Oh, well, there you go.
14:39Oh, we'll have lunch.
14:41That is the best fact ever about Rocky.
14:43I can't believe I didn't know that.
14:45So there's so many stories.
14:47It's when you have time to talk.
14:48It's only when you've got real time, I think.
14:50And that's why live events really work, because you've got, like, you know, probably an hour
14:53and a half, and you've got these people all to yourselves.
14:57And Arnold Schwarzenegger's another one who, I just sort of went off piece with him, because
15:01I thought, I want to walk on stage.
15:03I want to give him something.
15:04I want to give him a gift.
15:05I thought, oh, what can I buy?
15:06And then I looked up, sort of, in his youth, when he was, like, literally eight years old,
15:11the whole reason that he went to become a star in America is reading this book, which was all about the American dream.
15:18So I found this book, and I wrapped it up in brown paper and a little bit of string,
15:21and I gave it to him on stage, and he was really perplexed, because he was like, what is she doing?
15:26And then he opened up, and he was like, what is this?
15:28How did you know, Jenny?
15:30This is really...
15:31And I reduced him to tears.
15:33Wow.
15:34Yeah, and then I actually had the audacity to put in it, darling Arnie, I hope you enjoy this book.
15:40Lots of love, Jenny.
15:41So you met Arnie, and he got your autograph.
15:46Yeah, even though he didn't want it.
15:48I think that's the way it should be.
15:49I think so.
15:49You're our star.
15:50Brilliant.
15:51Thank you so much.
15:54Well, when it comes to 467, he said, I'll be back, and here he is.
16:0075 minus 25 to get the 50.
16:03That's what was throwing me.
16:05Add the 2 gives you 52.
16:07Then you multiply that by 9 to get 468.
16:11And then you've got 5 minus 4 gives you that last one.
16:14Take it away for 467.
16:16Yes, come on, Dr. Cole.
16:19Well done, well done.
16:20Well, let's get back to the game in 10 mature letters.
16:22Consonant, please, Tom.
16:23J.
16:25And another one.
16:28R.
16:29And a third.

16:34And a vowel.
16:36E.
16:37And another one.
16:39A.
16:41And a third.
16:44E.

17:02D.
17:03Thanks, Tom.

17:39Tim, the seven. Meander.
17:41Meander, and let's meander on over to Nanette.
17:44Re-jammed.
17:46There's only one M in there.
17:50Oh, sorry. It's not in any way.
17:52I don't know if that makes it better or worse.
17:53It's all right. I didn't realise I'd written that M down wrong.
17:56Sorry. So the seven sticks, what else can we add in there?
18:00Well, how about remanded? Four.

21:27It was the same but different.
21:29But different.
21:30Yes.
21:33Right, let's get our tea time teaser, which is Sue Twist.
21:36Sue Twist.

23:32OK, what's the six, Nanette?
23:34Tingle.
23:35What about you, Tim?
23:36Gentile.
23:37Very good, you can spell it with a small g.
23:40There you go.
23:40Nice, there you go.
23:42Tingle was lovely as well, but not long enough.
23:45Another little seven would be lentigo.
23:49Lentigo.
23:50Like age spots, really, the sort of brown pigmentation on your skin.
23:53Oh, yeah, I know what you mean.
23:53Yeah.
23:54Well, still a chance of goosebumps yet.
23:56That's not a big enough gap for Tim, so he can't rest yet.

25:09I think I've got an eight.
25:11And the net?
25:12Seven.
25:13Yeah, the eight's going to be fantastic.
25:14What's the seven?
25:16Overdue.
25:17Overdue.
25:18And for you, Tim, overused.
25:20Yeah, well-torted.
25:21Very good.
25:22So close.
25:23Unlucky there, Nanette.
25:24Tim picks up the eight points.
25:25Well done, sir.
25:27I've got me and Jenny in an old 80s night.
25:30Out at a party, we'd be voguers.
25:31You'd be voguing away.
25:33It's not in, sadly.
25:34What?
25:35No, you could have vogued, but not voguer.
25:37But voguer.
25:38Tell that the Madonna.
25:40Let's stay in Dictionary Corner and have our origins of words.
25:43Susie.
25:44Yeah.
25:45Well, thank you to John Stolachuk,
25:47who emailed to say that he's intrigued by words such as weakling,
25:52underling, changeling and foundling.
25:54Where does the ling come from and why are there no opposites?
25:58Strongling, overling, lostling.
26:00Please explain.
26:02So we take us right back to Old English,
26:06so the very early days of English,
26:08when ling was added to nouns with the sense of a person involved
26:14in what becomes before.
26:16So you have a ropeling was another word for a prisoner attached by ropes.
26:22A plowling was a plowman.
26:24And from there, you get the idea of someone who's associated with a quality of a particular adjective.
26:30So this is where we get a darling, someone who was originally a dearling,
26:35someone who was held dear.
26:36You get a youngling.
26:37You get an underling, a subordinate, a weakling, a foundling, all of these that John mentions.
26:43And I can confirm, John, that you did have an overling, someone who stood above other people.
26:48And in the 14th century, also a lostling, someone who was lost.
26:53And then finally, you get to the use that I think most of us are more familiar with,
26:56and that's to imply a little thing.
26:59So the offspring of an animal.
27:00So we have a gosling, for a little goose, a duckling.
27:03And for a while, we also had a kingling and a flowerling.
27:07But my absolute favourite of all of the ones that I found is something I think we should revive.
27:13So you could come and ask me a question, Colin, and I would say,
27:17don't disturb me now, I'm just having a thinkling.
27:20Oh, yes.
27:21Which is lovely.
27:22So I think we should bring those back.
27:23But it's been a very useful suffix throughout the ages.
27:25Great, thank you.
27:2684-47 is the score.
27:30Four rounds to go.
27:32Don't keep me waiting any longer, Nanette.

29:03Yes, that is absolutely brilliant.
29:05As is BOTHIE, it's one of my favourite words.
29:07It's a mountain refuge, really, in Scotland.
29:09It's gorgeous.
29:10Can we add anything to biotech?
29:12I'm guessing not.
29:13Nothing.
29:14Exactly.

33:33Let's reveal the answer.
33:35Ear-bash.
33:37So, so close.
33:38You'll be getting an ear-bashing for missing out on that,
33:42which means you haven't managed to get the highest single show score.
33:47There's only one word for that.
33:49Failure.
