00:00the vast Bering Sea over a million square miles of the world's most violent and unpredictable
00:12waters and home of the deadliest catch Alaskan crab it's January and that means the hunt for
00:22Opelio crab is on die-hard crews are back to face down bigger waves more boat crippling ice
00:34and deadly steel to cash in on the 59 million dollars at stake
00:45the season is just starting but before it's over the vicious Bering Sea will unleash surprises
00:55on the 400 brave souls tempting fate for fortune now the hunt continues for the deadliest catch
01:15yeah
01:24yeah
01:36yeah
01:40yeah
01:42it's the January crab fishing season and across the harbor crews are preparing for the ultimate
02:11test of guts and endurance the same Bering Sea fishermen who survived king crabbing are now
02:19back in Dutch Harbor for the Opelio crab season bitter temperatures and heavy freezing spray on
02:27land turns difficult work into an icy hell Richard guide me I can't see him sign of worse things to
02:37come the crew of the time bandit is finished preparing the 137 pods they'll use and is loading them on the boat
02:54where's Nathan I don't see Nathan trying to keep from killing these guys we're knocking them off the boat
03:06overhead
03:09for the winter season captain Jonathan lets brother Andy take over as captain on deck Jonathan supervises
03:19as all 137 pots are loaded on board you gotta tie these pots in two places to stop them from going
03:25forward and aft and stop them from going side to side so you gotta support and tie them both ways
03:32the bad thing is is when the boat rolls and these pots shift it's not like they just shift and fall
03:38off the boat they shift and then they are all tied up and they get jumbled up on one side and then they're
03:44hanging off the side of the boat careful preparation now can mean the difference between life and death
03:49a boat with a full stack of pots is at its most vulnerable when loaded the time bandit will have
03:55110,000 pounds of steel stacked above deck increasing the risk of rollover in the past the combination of
04:04top-heavy boats and rough seas has consistently led to tragedy
04:08we're laying away over our side five people on the boat repeat five people only a few years ago the
04:1986-foot Raven rolled in heavy seas with a full stack the crew were lucky all five men aboard were rescued by
04:31the coast guard but just two years ago a similar situation ended tragically for the big valley and
04:38her six-man crew the big valley is one of our partner boats in our fishing group no one in our
04:47groups has heard anything from him yet his e-curve is going off and he's not answering the coast guard
04:53after a 60-hour search by the coast guard and a dozen crab vessels that raced to the area of the distress
05:16signal only one survivor from the big valley was found decant cash seal would be the only survivor of
05:36the big valley tragedy he related the harrowing tale to the coast guard
05:41tragically four other crew members and their captain Gary Edwards all perished when the big valley sank
06:01across the harbor the Cornelia Marie is taking on a load of frozen herring
06:24up slow a part of the five tons of bait it will need for its 185 pots
06:31Jake the captain's son unloads the frozen fish just picking up the last odds and ends
06:37little boxes user-friendly
06:41the captain's other son Josh on his first Opelio trip meets old family friend Murray Gamrat
06:50you're going to see a lot of how much these kids grow up so never thought I'd be working on deck with them
06:56if you have told me when I was 13 I'd be working on deck with them I wouldn't have believed you either
07:02it's crazy he's taught me a lot great teacher great teacher has a lot of patience which is definitely necessary
07:10a few docks away the 127 foot northwestern is also loading bait the last 2,000 pounds just came aboard
07:25they've got a 650,000 pound quota to catch and the deckhands have requested an extra man on deck to help out
07:33all we got to do is leave the dock and we can't do that without our our new guy so we're going to wait for him then we can get out of here
07:40there goes new guys coming new guys coming
07:45the new guy is 23 year old greenhorn Jake Anderson Edgar is the first to greet him
07:51welcome to hell
07:52deckhand Nick Mavar recommended Jake for the job
07:56but it'll take guts and hard work to gain acceptance from this tight-knit crew
08:03excited?
08:05yeah what do I do?
08:07I hope that he works out okay I hate to go out there with an extra man and find out that it was for nothing
08:12personally I'd like to just go out with the four guys I have
08:16I know they can do the job but they seem to want that extra hand they want you know that that fifth man
08:24as long as he does what he's told there'll be no problem
08:27I've got to pack in as much abuse as I can in the next few weeks
08:31that him? yeah?
08:34that's the new guy
08:36just stay there go away
08:39Sig has a tradition for greeting greenhorns he doesn't
08:43I'll shake it after the season if you do a good job
08:48he'll have to prove his worth before he earns the skipper's respect
08:53the season is open
08:55and the fleet begins the day and a half journey to the far north Opelio fishing grounds
09:00hey Marvin
09:03we're off to the circuit
09:052007 Opie's
09:11on the northwestern veteran Sig Hansen begins his 23rd season fishing Opelio crab
09:26this is just before the start of our Opelio session
09:32we've got about a 240 mile run up to St. George and St. Paul
09:47we have stored gear there from King Crab and we need to go rescue the pots so that's our goal
09:53Sig's pots are stored far to the north at the bottom of the Bering Sea
09:57where they could be in danger of being swallowed up and destroyed by the descending ice pack
10:03I cannot stand the ice up there
10:06this is like a fisherman's nightmare to me
10:10I hate it
10:11there's not too many things that I hate and this is definitely one of them
10:14the seasoned crew of the northwestern knows what to expect during Opelio season
10:20but greenhorn Jake has no idea of the pain and danger he's about to endure
10:26I'm a little nervous right now
10:30because I'm hearing a lot about the ice and wind
10:33it's going to be freezing cold
10:35the greenhorn won't be the only one on deck starting a new life
10:41finished up our King Crab in a good timely fashion
10:45I got home
10:47it's time for my court date
10:49the judge was pretty lenient
10:51I didn't get the eight month sentence
10:53like I would have got if I'd have missed that court date
10:57I ended up getting a couple weeks
11:00during the King Crab season
11:01the crew painted prison stripes on Matt's oil skins
11:05dude he went to town dude
11:07it's time to burn
11:09he's done his time
11:11do a little four step
11:13done doing the crimes
11:15I think this is it
11:17what?
11:19wow
11:23whoa it's all mine
11:25give me speech Matt
11:27speech
11:28wow
11:29yeah
11:31what the hell was that?
11:33we blew up Matt's past
11:35you blew up his past
11:37you blew up his what?
11:47yeah that felt pretty good
11:49in a way I feel like he owes us more than we owe him right now
11:53and if he wants to blow up his past that's great
11:55but then I think he damn well better you know
11:57mean it
11:59and take it seriously
12:01because it's not a joke
12:03to me it's not
12:05that's what's left of your past Matt
12:07both Matt and young Jake
12:09will have to prove themselves to SIG
12:11before this trip is over
12:13make sure you don't wear that in the future
12:15as the time bandit makes its way beyond the safety of the harbor
12:19the weather kicks up
12:23the crew double checks that their stack of pots is secure
12:27woohoo
12:29hang on
12:33now we got some weather coming in
12:35this is the good stuff
12:37we don't like it when it's sunny
12:39turns us into crybabies
12:41Captain Andy is anxious to get out of town
12:45and drop his gear on a secret fishing ground
12:47known only to the Hillstrand brothers
12:53where we're going
12:54nobody in our co-op even knows about it
12:57we're looking to bet everything on black
12:59time bandit black
13:00and hit the mother load
13:01get ready for this one
13:03looking for a huge reward
13:05if we can pull this off
13:09367 miles northwest of Dutch Harbor
13:13Captain Keith Colburn left port early
13:15to try and avoid rough weather
13:17but when he hits the southern end
13:19of the Opelio fishing grounds
13:21he arrives to 15 foot swells
13:23and 30 mile per hour gusts
13:25the weather is still pretty sloppy
13:27it hasn't come down yet
13:29relatively big seas still out here
13:31the wind is down quite a bit
13:33but that big low pushed up some pretty big waves here southwest
13:37so
13:43greenhorns Crosby Levine and Nick Marmer
13:45are ready to start fishing
13:4725, 26
13:49how much bait do we have?
13:51we have enough for 50 pots
13:53this is where the magic happens if you will
13:55the magic of uh
13:57baiting some pots
13:59it's a dirty job if somebody's gotta do it
14:01what got me into fishing is just wanted to come to Alaska
14:03and have it be the job I got
14:05and here I am
14:07it only beats a
14:09beats the desk job
14:11to bless their season with good luck
14:13Nick has agreed to try a Bering Sea delicacy
14:15cod intestines
14:17eat it
14:19that's good luck
14:21it's a delicacy in Japan
14:23let's see what all the hype's about
14:25the wizard was originally a navy fuel supply ship
14:53not a crab boat
14:57it rides low in the water
14:59making pot launching wet
15:01and dangerous work
15:11first pot
15:13this is it
15:15this is it
15:17the first pot of the Opelio season
15:19is on its way to the bottom
15:21as 400 brave fishermen around the fleet
15:25begin another hunt
15:27for Bering Sea gold
15:29as the low man on the boat
15:31Nick's job is to hang bait
15:33in all 230 of the wizard's pots
15:35for the low man on the boat
15:37Nick's job is to hang bait
15:39in all 230 of the wizard's pots
15:41Watch your back.
15:43Oh, boy!
16:11Monty warns Nick to keep the doors tight.
16:16Opelio crab are less than half the size of king crab and will slip out of the smallest
16:36gap.
16:37The one in the rack is the last pot.
17:06After 40 hours of fighting rough waves and wrestling deadly steel, the crew has managed
17:11to launch 229 of their 230 pots.
19:45He's smiling at everything.
19:46In trouble?
19:47He smiles.
19:48Still sitting in Dutch Harbor is the Far West leader.
20:00Captain Greg Moncrief and his crew are waiting for their mandatory Coast Guard inspection
20:05drills.
20:06So we're just waiting.
20:07The Coast Guard should be down in the next 15, 20 minutes.
20:10Hopefully we should be leaving tonight, weather permitting.
20:13While Greg waits on the Coast Guard, Chili, the cook when Rod Mild's not on board, takes
20:19charge of stuffing the galley with provisions.
20:20Best place for those is on a shelf.
20:21Is it hard to find a place to put all the food?
20:26No.
20:27You just have to know where to put it.
20:29The potatoes, I just sent them to the Fort Peak.
20:31Send them back.
20:32They're full.
20:33Yogurt.
20:34Never had that much yogurt, but we've got to find a spot for the yogurt.
20:37All right.
20:38Split those up into threes and put them in the Ziploc bag.
20:42There you go.
20:43I'm not even from Wisconsin.
20:44All the lettuce has to be taken out of the plastic bags and put it in the vegetables
20:48in.
20:49The cheese case.
20:50That's one of each cheese.
20:51The eggs, the chicken embryos, some of you got.
20:52I just sent the potatoes back to the Fort Peak and now they're back in the kitchen.
20:55Celery goes in there.
20:56Yeah.
20:57For apples here, cantaloupes.
20:58Yeah.
20:59Most of it's going to go back to the Fort Peak.
21:00Both.
21:01Take the potatoes with you.
21:02I don't know why they ended up back here again.
21:04Third time.
21:05We've got to get you organized.
21:08Coast Guard's here.
21:09The Coast Guard inspectors arrive and brief everyone on board.
21:13So what I'll do is I'll give you a scenario down there and then I'll just see how you guys
21:19react.
21:20The first test, a fire drill.
21:23The Coast Guard hides a strobe light and smoke bomb somewhere on board.
21:27The crew's job is to find it, radio their situation and extinguish the mock fire.
21:32525.
21:33We have a fire in the bathroom.
21:35So if you can get to the strobe light and secure it, then you can see if the fire is under
21:39control.
21:40Fire's out.
21:41Fire's out.
21:42I just had a simulated fire drill and we just simulated putting it out.
21:51Everything seemed to go pretty good.
21:53Next is the emergency suit drill.
21:55You figure if you're going to be abandoning ship, you're not going to have a nice flat deck like
22:02you have right now.
22:03Chances are the ship's going to be on fire.
22:05It's sinking.
22:06It's going to be without power.
22:08You're going to be in the trough rolling around.
22:10So the first thing you want to do is you want to sit down on your suit.
22:15All right.
22:16Once you sit down on your suit, put your legs in.
22:19Now you can roll to your knees.
22:21Don't stand up.
22:22Roll to your knees.
22:23And zip your suit all the way up.
22:25Does it have to go all the way up there?
22:27Yeah, you need to sit all the way up.
22:29And then fold the flap across.
22:31Now you go ahead and stand up and help your buddies out.
22:36To pass this test, the entire crew, including the captain,
22:40must throw on their survival suits in under one minute.
22:44Feel free to help anybody who doesn't have a suit on get it on.
22:48Put speedies in there.
22:51Right arm.
22:53Next time you don't want to pull that sweatshirt off.
22:56It's too much.
22:58Right there.
23:00Okay, watch him.
23:02Here you go.
23:03Got to get him all the way up.
23:05Oh.
23:06You okay?
23:07Okay?
23:08Let me get you good.
23:09Okay, can you see?
23:11Okay, I'm zipping you up.
23:12Zip your head back.
23:13We're free to help.
23:14All the way.
23:17Got ya.
23:19Going up.
23:20Going up for the help.
23:23Watch the wrap.
23:24With some help, even Rognild got in her survival suit
23:27in less than a minute.
23:28Now, she can't wait to get out of it.
23:31I'm very claustrophobic.
23:33I think that's mainly the problem.
23:35I cannot even start to imagine how it would be like in the water,
23:39trying to breathe, and then have this over your mouth,
23:43and then fight water at the same time.
23:46Cannot imagine.
23:47They need only look back to the start of last King Crab season,
23:54and the tragedy of the Ocean Challenger,
23:56to understand the value of a survival suit.
24:02In these 36-degree waters, without a suit, survival time is only minutes.
24:09So I dove in the water, got the suit, come on deck,
24:12and tried to get everybody going, but, I mean,
24:14he somehow, he let his suit get away from him.
24:17And the other guy, I don't know what happened to him.
24:21He climbed up, and then he just froze.
24:22He went and put his suit on him.
24:31Oh, it all happened pretty quick.
24:33But yeah, it's probably four minutes,
24:35four and a half, five minutes.
24:37The Coast Guard drill is completed.
24:49Captain Greg guides his boat out of the dock,
24:52and into the unpredictable Winter Bering Sea.
24:59The Northwestern is 250 miles north-northwest of Dutch Harbor,
25:02just to the east of St. George Island.
25:05The crew is hauling gear from a storage area
25:09in rough seas and against the tide.
25:12And Greenhorn Jake Anderson is getting his first experience
25:15wrestling with 800 pounds of swinging steel.
25:22I thought you were fast.
25:24It's starting to get into rhythm right now.
25:26It takes a little bit.
25:28Right now, Edgar's keeping me as a gopher right now.
25:30Bring it around to you.
25:32Put the hook up.
25:33Put the hook up.
25:35Like that.
25:36If you leave it a little loose,
25:37make sure that comes around the corner.
25:39That way it doesn't get pinched inside.
25:40Again.
25:43The worst part is we haven't even started fishing yet.
25:45We're just getting the gear ready.
25:47It's about 10 in the morning.
26:00We're on the east side of the island.
26:02These pots are way in the shallows,
26:04and the gear's just been hammered.
26:07Sea lions have gone through our pots and popped quite a few of our bags.
26:19They use them as toys.
26:21It's a fun game for the sea lions, but a royal pain for Sig and his crew.
26:37Look, there's teeth marks right there.
26:39Right there.
26:40These bags are supposed to be full of air, not water.
26:49We've got an 80-pound water balloon.
26:52And now we're trying to find our pots.
26:54A lot of them have lost their diver bags,
26:56so what you have is a small trailer bag that's bobbing in the water.
27:00This is our diver bag here.
27:02These have been filling up full of water.
27:05This bag marks where the pot's at.
27:07And when this one is pulled under the water,
27:10it pulls this one down, too.
27:12So, you know, you can't just ride right up to it.
27:15Sig's looking for this much bag floating on top of the surface.
27:19Jake gets a reprieve from the rigors of deck work
27:22when Sig calls him up to the wheelhouse to help look for floats.
27:26Look for a single bobber.
27:28Yeah, there should be bags right here.
27:31Do you see it?
27:33Where?
27:34Right up from starboard.
27:36You've got the next one?
27:39I've got the next three.
27:40Yeah, but you said it's far away.
27:42That means we're missing one.
27:43It's far away, yeah.
27:44I bet you the boys downstairs are just not liking me.
27:49Well, he's the least effective down there.
27:51He might as well be the most effective up here.
27:54And I doubt they miss you, so don't toot your horn.
27:58I guess he figured Junior would be the best choice,
28:00seeing that he doesn't do anything out here.
28:06We're going to tie on it.
28:08This is one of many flat bags we've had, our diver bags.
28:17Yeah, we've got another one.
28:19Another top bag.
28:26One after another.
28:28This place is a nightmare.
28:30This is probably number 25, 30 that's been flat so far.
28:37Normally this should have come up in about, I don't know, 12 hours at the most.
28:42And now it's taken over double that.
28:45You know, it'll take us over a day, 30 hours probably to get this stuff on board.
28:50You know, that's the way it is.
28:52That's the risk we took.
28:53And that's all part of the game.
28:57The crew is in a foul mood and ready to take it out on Jake.
29:00Pretty good, Junior.
29:01Nice and warm up there, isn't it?
29:06That was pretty quiet without him out on deck.
29:07Are you feeling guilty?
29:08I was feeling guilty the whole time.
29:09He should be.
29:10Oh, let's start getting him doing some more stuff.
29:13Pay for his little time off.
29:15You lose that bag because you're not.
29:17It's coming out of your settlement.
29:18Roger.
29:19Better make that tight.
29:22Hoisting a few 120-pound shots quickly gets Jake back into the cold reality of deck work.
29:42361 miles to the northwest of Dutch Arbor.
29:53It's the dawn of a new day.
29:55The crew of the Wizard is ready to start hauling the gear they left to soak 12 hours ago.
30:01Greenhorn Nick Marver can't wait to start.
30:04Captain Keith is allowing Nick to work the rail.
30:10This is a big step towards becoming a full-share deckhand.
30:13The first pot swings over the rail, and it's looking good.
30:28Yeah.
30:29That's a goal.
30:30Only if my mama could see me now.
30:35I already did.
30:36I already did.
30:37What the?
30:38He's the one of those guys.
30:39You gotta speed it into his brain.
30:40Tell him four or five, come on.
30:41He's done.
30:42I got it.
30:43You gotta beat him.
30:44I'm not gonna beat him.
30:45I'm not gonna beat him.
30:46He's done.
30:47He's done.
30:48He's done.
30:49I'm not gonna beat him.
30:50I'm not gonna beat him.
30:51I already did.
30:52What the?
30:53Be the one of those guys.
30:54You gotta speed it into his brain.
30:55Tell him four or five, come on.
30:56You got it.
30:57Oh.
30:58Just grab the whole patel like this.
31:01Oh, just grab the whole title like this.
31:06Set it on your foot, grab that.
31:12Keep your hand on the outside.
31:16Okay?
31:19Told me not to stick my hand in the loops and the coils
31:22because obviously it's going to tighten up on me
31:24and get a bite on my hand or something.
31:26I'm going to be gone, so...
31:28So far, the fishing looks good.
31:30And the rookie, Nick, he's holding his own.
31:34These guys are looking out for me, you know?
31:36Nick's still throwing.
31:37He hasn't gotten the boot yet.
31:39So far, he hasn't done anything really stupid
31:43or, you know, borderline dangerous or anything.
31:49Can you read them glasses?
31:50They're looking good.
31:54318 miles north-northwest of Dutch Harbor,
31:57the Cornelia Marie is launching its first pots of the season.
32:04Already, the weather is affecting the fleet.
32:07Until we get these pots off the top,
32:09then I'll be set in full blast again.
32:10But I don't want to lose anybody right out of the gate.
32:16Freezing temperatures and rough seas are a dangerous combination
32:20for a fully loaded crab boat in winter.
32:24Ice is the silent killer.
32:26As it builds up, the boat becomes top-heavy
32:28and at risk of rolling over.
32:30So we can get a layer of these pots off.
32:33I've got to be able to see the launcher.
32:35I just want to get these pots off the boat right now.
32:52This is greenhorn Josh Harris's first taste of Opelio fishing.
32:56How you doing, brother?
32:57Live and kicking.
32:58He's getting our first pots off the boat.
32:59He's doing good.
33:04Going over.
33:05As night descends, the launching continues nonstop.
33:20We're here.
33:22We're here.
33:23We're here.
33:25Go, go, go.
33:27We're here.
33:28Go, go, go, go.
33:30Go, go, go.
33:31Go, go, go, go.
33:34Go, go.
33:36Go!
33:39Get out, but I'll get out of here.
33:41I'll run after this.
33:43He's doing good, we're all caught up, I don't have to help him out at all, so that means
34:05he's doing his job and then some.
34:07He's got a ways to go, but you know, he learns quick, so Josh has got a bright future in
34:13this business.
34:14He's doing a good job.
34:15Feels good to get the gear off the boat, went way better than last year, we weren't breaking
34:19the ice off every shot, so it's already going better than last year.
34:26But not everything is better than last year, as Phil has just found out.
34:31Son of a .
34:35What they know at this point is that it was caught on fire, they had to flood the engine
34:40roof as a governor on one of the main engines.
34:43They're going to tow the vessel into Dutch Harbor and start repairs and assess the situation
34:49there.
34:50Phil's crab processor is out of business.
34:53It doesn't bode well for guys that are out here right now like yourself and myself.
34:58The skippers are all ready to catch crab, but now they have nowhere to offload it.
35:06Phil is contracted to offload his crab to the Stellar C processing boat.
35:13You've got to have somewhere to take that .
35:19So right now, the best thing for me to do is get the boat where it's safe.
35:24We can anchor it up up at St. Paul and get out of the weather.
35:28After an engine room fire, the crab processor Stellar C is being towed into Dutch Harbor for
35:35what may mean days of repairs.
35:37240 miles to the north, the Cornelia Marie pulls into a dock in St. Paul.
35:42They have no idea how long it will take before they can get back to fishing.
35:47Basically, we've got nowhere to deliver our product right now.
35:50So instead of putting a bunch of crab on the boat, we decided to come in here and wait it out.
35:55We all would rather be making some money, but kind of got to roll the punches out here.
36:00The crew tries to keep busy making minor repairs, but the reality of wasting days in a frozen port
36:07instead of fishing and making no money has them tense.
36:11That was antsy yesterday.
36:14Now this is just boredom.
36:18Don't try this at home without the parents' permission.
36:28Starting OP season, stuck at the dock has Captain Phil grasping for some way, any way, to bring some good luck.
36:35It's drastic times.
36:37We've got to do drastic things.
36:39Boy, is that as clean as a baby's butt or what?
36:48What do you think?
36:50You're a potty with a naughty body.
36:57That's my boy.
36:58The time bandit is 277 miles northwest of Dutch Harbor, preparing to drop pots.
37:08The processor fire has left them in a tough spot.
37:11But the Hillstrand brothers are making a bold move.
37:15They're going to fish another crab species, bear die crab.
37:19Bear die is a close cousin of the Opelio crab, but more importantly, it can be delivered to another processor.
37:25We decided to come out with plan B to do bear die and maybe hit the mother load.
37:31Maybe not.
37:32We'll find out.
37:33It's all good.
37:34We're fishing.
37:46Bear die crab were overfished and have been protected for 10 years.
37:50Now since no one has been tracking them, no one knows where they are.
37:54Captain Andy's strategy is to set a shotgun pattern of 80 prospect pots spread out over 80 miles.
38:07There's a lot riding on this set right here.
38:11If we hit the mother load, these guys stand to make 56,000 pots.
38:15And it means getting all the lines straight because this is a very important part.
38:18And since we're setting these a mile apart, we're running faster.
38:23Plus, the way the weather is, it's perfect.
38:26We're right in the trough with the weather coming over the starboard rail right in our bases.
38:34In these rough seas, Captain Andy is concerned for the crew's safety.
38:37I usually ask the guys to clear off the pots.
38:40Then I can see them better.
38:42And then, uh, that way I can see if a wave's going to hit them.
38:44I can warn them with the loud-haler.
38:46It's loud to watch out.
38:48So as soon as I can see those guys, it's like twice as safe.
38:52So I'm really nervous right now with what's going on.
38:56After seven hours of setting pots a mile apart, most of the gear is still on board.
39:13We've got two more to get off the top stack.
39:16Then we'll just have to deck load.
39:18We won't have to have a guy go up there anymore.
39:22Because the pots are spaced 10 minutes apart on this 80-mile string, the crew never gets any real break time.
39:30It's just tedious because we can only set six pots an hour.
39:34So we've got to stand out here for 12 hours.
39:40After 80 pots and 80 miles, the crew finally gets a break.
39:45And Jonathan takes the first watch.
39:48Radio traffic is usually quiet at night.
39:50But tonight, he hears a Coast Guard call.
39:53Clear somewhere where they can get in and, uh...
39:55That must be pretty hurt.
39:56Probably a huge whipper to get down there too huge.
39:58So, uh, you could, uh, clear a spot.
40:01Yeah.
40:02Okay, Roger.
40:03That, uh, good copy.
40:04We'll pass it.
40:05We'll pass it along to our helo and then, uh, once he has one.
40:07The guy must be hurt pretty bad.
40:11Uh, they're not men evacuating him to helicopter.
40:14The Coast Guard station on Kodiak Island has received a distress call from a fishing vessel.
40:19Let's go, let's go, let's go!
40:20They have a sick man in grave condition.
40:23They believe that if he's not airlifted out for medical attention, he may die.
40:27Blood in the stool.
40:28So he's in rough shape.
40:29So we need to back him out there.
40:3041-year-old male, 130 miles east of here, vomiting of blood.
40:33The Coast Guard Jayhawk rescue helicopter is rolled out of the hangar.
40:37And the mission is underway.
40:38We've got 30 knots of wind right now.
40:40So we should get a decent push on the way there.
40:45The season has just begun.
40:46And the Wizard is the only boat to have pulled any pots.
40:54It's January on the Bering Sea.
40:56And once again, the Coast Guard has been called upon to remove a fisherman from harm's way.
41:01One hour ago, the Coast Guard responded to a distress call from a fishing vessel.
41:09One of their deckhands was unresponsive, vomiting blood, and in need of immediate medical attention.
41:16The Coast Guard quickly responded, sending a CH-60 rescue helicopter for an emergency medical evacuation.
41:22Coast Guard, Alaska Patriot.
41:29Coast Guard, Alaska Patriot.
41:31Yeah, roger that.
41:32What's the highest point that your vessel does below?
41:35That's probably 50 or 60 feet above the deck, okay?
41:39With winds blowing 40 knots, the Coast Guard will have to carefully thread the needle between the mast and the rigging to get the swimmer safely aboard.
41:48Next, they lower the litter for the injured man.
42:15It turns 20 feet forward.
42:17It's all in front.
42:18It's all in front.
42:19It's all in front.
42:20Easy for weight.
42:27Rescue swimmer Byron Cross quickly secures the patient in the litter.
42:33Then, he's pulled back into the aircraft so he can help haul the sick fisherman aboard.
42:38No!
42:39What do you want that?
42:40Get in front, you'll suddenly do again.
42:41Not 10 foot, now, I'm going up to work here.
42:42You hear the adjustment of your plane to get theaca, right?
42:43Thank you to yourViolet Police and the crew chief.
42:44These units are override without atteigING.

42:55There's a lot of distance in every single plane to get up your operating equipment.
43:00Get in front.
43:01You can do other ble to do.
43:03They're working at home,
43:04even though they've got to handle times they can only get the inflow because of times they can't cut those with
43:06Once the patient's on board the chopper, rescue swimmer Byron Cross checks for vitals.
43:36The patient is violently throwing up blood, a very bad sign.
43:50We now have a viral hazard.
43:52Okay.
43:53He was just hanging up the wall.
43:57We need some higher level of care for this patient, so if you could get the local EMS to
44:04come this way, that'd be outstanding.
44:07After 90 minutes in flight, the rescue chopper touches down.
44:12The fisherman's condition is serious, but because of the quick actions taken by the Coast Guard,
44:17his chance of survival is good.
