00:00I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

00:14William Ernest Henley wrote Invictus in 1875 while recovering in a hospital.

00:32He was suffering from tuberculosis of the bone, which resulted in the amputation of one

00:38of his legs below the knee.

00:41Doctors even warned him his other leg might need to be amputated too.

00:50Despite this immense physical pain and emotional struggle, Henley refused to give up.

01:00While confined to a hospital bed, he penned this timeless poem, a bold declaration of strength

01:07and resilience in the face of darkness.

01:13His powerful words have since inspired people across the globe, including Nelson Mandela,

01:20who would recite Invictus to himself and his fellow prisoners during his 27 years of imprisonment

01:27on Robben Island, and it helped him remain mentally unbreakable, eventually rising to become

01:36South Africa's first black president and a global symbol of peace and justice.
