Ahead of Record Store Day 2025 we visit Love Music in Glasgow

Record Store Day is returning on Saturday 12 April. In preparation we visited Love Music to find out why the day is important to independent businesses.

00:00Record Store Day came along and gave the whole industry a shot in the arm.

00:04It helped create the vinyl revival.

00:06It really just went hand-in-hand with what we were doing

00:08and basically got so much exposure via Record Store Day

00:11and the press that came along with it that we've been able to survive.

00:14And that's the main thing about Record Store Day,

00:15is to bring people back into physical record shops

00:17rather than just sit on your butt at home and click on a button

00:20and get it sent to your home.

00:21It's very convenient, but at the same time,

00:23you're missing out and a big sense of community.

00:24Love Music has been here since 1996.

00:27I've been behind this counter for a long time now,

00:29about 25 years and counting.

00:31So we've always been a kind of blend between new releases and second-hand stuff.

00:35You get all the new stuff, plus you get the excitement of seeing what comes in.

00:38And in the second-hand world, you just never know.

00:40I really enjoy that part of it.

00:41It's a bit of a cliche, but there are musical hubs around,

00:44and there have been for decades, where people meet.

00:46And you can see, you know, musicians wanted posters on the poles in here.

00:49You can see a lot of independent artists

00:51and a lot of things that don't have distribution.

00:54You know, there's a lot of record shops in Glasgow.

00:55People have a really good amount of choice.

00:57So we have to kind of keep concentrating and keep, you know,

00:59keep adapting to survive.

01:01And just basically, we have to kind of run faster just to stand still.

01:04Mr. Connolly, Sir Connolly, drank from when he was here a couple years ago.

01:08He was talking about the first record he ever bought.

01:10And his first record was a Hank Williams single

01:13that he bought at the Barris Market when he was just a youngster.

01:16So we had a record player set up here on the counter,

01:18and basically Billy played Hank Williams records

01:20and sang along and then yodeled along as well.

01:23So it was an interesting afternoon.

01:25He was very friendly and we had a good time.

01:26And he drank some Iron Brew and we just kept it

01:28so in case we could clone him in the future.

01:31I have a particular favourite album,

01:34and it's Blue Nile Hats,

01:36which has several tracks on it,

01:39which I think are very melodic

01:42and akin to the Blue Nile style.
