More AI smart cameras installed across Adelaide’s traffic network

New AI-Smart Cameras are now operating on some of Adeliade’s busiest thoroughfares, help to alleviate congestion and avoid collisions. Four of the cameras were installed as part of a trial of the new technology, but the state government says the rollout could be expanded across the city’s traffic network.

00:06They'll save lives, they'll save time and they'll save money.

00:09New cameras are using artificial intelligence to identify and respond to periods of high traffic flow,

00:15the technology already in use on four of Adelaide's arterial roads.

00:20Before the technology was implemented, shows cars banking up onto the road, leading to a collision.

00:25Now, congestion is detected and signals can be adjusted to clear the queue.

00:30The cameras were designed by engineering company Safe Group Automation,

00:34which says the intelligence has the potential to revolutionise traffic management.

00:39This type of technology is really a change in how control systems are being worked on the road network.

00:44While there will be an assessment at the end of the $350,000 trial,

00:48the cameras may be rolled out more widely,

00:51which the state government says will bring significant economic benefit,

00:55with motorists spending less time stuck in traffic.

00:58We want to make sure we get it right,

01:00because the potential savings for us are in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

01:04If it's evidence based and it reduces the amount of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads,

01:09then we'll certainly support it.

01:10But the government is yet to put a date on when this new tech will get the green light.
