I am Katie Dawkins, I'm an advanced PGA professional and I'm here at West Hill
00:08
Golf Club to talk to you about possibly changing your putting grip and I'm going
00:13
to talk to you today about the reverse overlap grip. So how do you hold your
00:18
putter grip? A lot of people would look down and go what do you mean how do I
00:21
grip my putter? I grip it the same way I'd normally grip my clubs by
00:25
interlocking or overlapping. Now that grip is designed to help you to achieve
00:30
a bit of whip through the ball so give you a bit of a handy action in the golf
00:33
swing. In putting we don't want that so it's a really good idea to maybe look at
00:38
changing this. A solid option would be the reverse overlap grip and all we're
00:44
doing here is we're taking the palms from working together with the main
00:47
swing where we would achieve a bit of a flick of the wrists to turning them away
00:51
from each other, putting the club more into the palm and sitting very softly
00:55
this this index finger of the top hand over my cuticles. I tend to call this my
01:00
cuticle grip when I'm coaching. It gives a lovely soft hold on the putter, I'm in
01:05
control but I can now rock from the shoulders back and through the nice
01:10
fluid action rather than giving it a bang. So what we achieve by taking the
01:14
hands out of the equation and going hands-free is a nice smooth stroke. That
01:20
will really help us with distance control, it'll help us keep the club face
01:23
square and hold more putts ultimately and who doesn't want to hold more putts.
01:27
What you want to make sure of with this grip is that there's still no squeeze in
01:32
it, you're not squeezing the putter for dear life, you're letting that putter
01:36
rest and then rocking from the shoulders in a nice smooth action. You're then
01:41
determining how far the putter goes by how much back and through you give it. So
01:46
the reverse overlap grip is going to really make those longer putts much
01:50
easier to control distance wise. You'll find it smoothly rolls on the green
01:54
rather than jumping and skidding which is what tends to happen when we give it
01:56
a hit. It's worth remembering as well that this grip might not be for you, just
02:01
because your best golfing pal has started using it doesn't necessarily
02:05
mean it's going to work for you. So you need to give it a little bit of time, get
02:09
used to it but also if your putting is really really good, don't change it. Stick
02:15
with it and take confidence in the fact that you're already taking the winnings
02:19
from your playing partners.
