00:06It's $40,000 an episode, or roughly $320,000 for the season.

00:11That is a lot less than other hit shows like Netflix's Stranger Things,

00:14where the actors will reportedly be making between $6-9 million for the upcoming season.

00:19But the equal salary is just one way the team behind The White Lotus

00:22says it ensures a level playing field.

00:24They also do alphabetical billing in the show's credits,

00:27so veteran actors like Parker Posey aren't listed before newer talent like Sarah Catherine Cook.

00:32Now, in case you've been living under a rock,

00:34we're talking about the hit HBO show created by Mike White that follows the

00:37staff and privileged guests at a chain of luxury resorts known as The White Lotus.

00:42The show has 43 Emmy nominations and 15 wins to date, so it's not surprising

00:47that it's able to attract some very talented and well-established actors,

00:51despite the salary restrictions.

00:53This season of The White Lotus reflects the very real trend of the self-care-cation,

00:58where people take trips that prioritize health and wellness

01:00over more traditional vacation experiences.

01:03The wellness craze has been around for a while,

01:05so I can't say that there's some sort of White Lotus effect,

01:08but the wellness market in the U.S. has grown almost 7% since 2022, reaching $480 billion.

01:15That includes everything from spa sales to nutrition plans to stress management.

01:19And similar to the show, the trend is raising questions about exclusivity.

01:22Are we actually promoting health,

01:24or is this just another luxury-driven trend for the upper class?
