00:00Start talking about Democrats because when we spoke in February was not good news for Democrats. Democrats have faced historic
00:07Popularity problems, but what do people think about the left now? Tell us about it
00:13Sure, it's still not good news for the Democrats. I mean the Democratic Party is
00:18in the wilderness right now and
00:21It needs to find a path forward in
00:24In two very concrete ways one is who will be the standard bearers of the party
00:31Going forward because the public clearly doesn't think that that's AOC only about a third
00:36believe that AOC should be the standard bearer of the Democratic Party and while she has a
00:42small majority of support
00:45Within the Democrats. It's still a small majority of support. They're closer to be being split than anything
00:50Than anything else and then on the other side on the issues and the positions that they have
00:58the voters
00:59voters in general want the Democratic Party to
01:05Temper its positions and be a lot more common sense and a lot more constructive
01:10with how it's engaging with both Trump and the Republicans and
01:15You know when we look at the difference in approvals Republicans are 50% approved
01:21While they're governed, right? It's a little bit down than last month where they were at 55% but they're still very high
01:28Democrats last month. They were at 35% an all-time low this month. They're at 36%
01:35Again, statistically at an all-time
01:38low
01:39Their Senate leader Chuck Schumer in our favorability table
01:44Has the second lowest favorability only after Vladimir Putin and has the highest negative net
01:51Favorability only after Vladimir Putin. Of course, it's the names that we tested but I invite people to go to
01:59HarvardHarrisPoll.com and look at the data. This is not the type of data that you want to have as the leading
02:07Opposition party and further to that a third of Democrats don't approve of the Democratic Party today
02:13and close to three-fourths of independents
02:16They're not going to win anything for a generation with these numbers
02:19so
02:21the Democratic Party needs to recalibrate itself and
02:25Voters are waiting for that voters expected voters want the Democratic Party to
02:31engage rather than stall and fight
02:35and the data no matter how you look at it is
02:39You know raising alarms for Democrats and asking them to reorganize
02:47If you're essentially the highest elected leader in the Democratic Party and you're only pulling above Vladimir Putin
02:53I mean that's not a place you want to be and I think we saw this type of
02:58Democratic losing their footing in fighting last month during that CR fight where the house was pretty much almost
03:04United in voting against the CR then
03:08Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did the about-face and voted for it averting a government shutdown
03:13Is that something that voters want to see do voters want to see?
03:18Democrats help not help Trump but try to find bipartisanship try to work with the Trump administration
03:25Work with Republicans or do Democrats want to see their leaders fight back a little bit more
03:31So 55% are a little bit more actually agreed with Schumer voting for the continuing resolution
03:39and not shutting down the government and
03:44You know while a very small majority of Democrats want to
03:48Fight back again. It's closer to the 50-50 mark than it is to an outright consensus that we should be fighting
03:57So, yes, it's clear that voters even amongst the ranks of Democrats they want
04:03more common-sense approaches more bipartisanship
04:07Coming together and really a new consensus of the Democratic Party in separate polling that we do when we ask
04:14What are the Democrats focused on?
04:17They're not focused on any of the key issues of the country cares about in the eyes of voters themselves
04:23Voters believe that they are
04:25focused still on
04:28You know what could be categorized as quote-unquote walk issues
04:33right more cultural issues of
04:35Centered left or the far left then they are on the hard problems that are facing the country and as long as this is the case
04:44Trump and the Republicans have both the tactical and strategic advantage
04:49Heading into the midterms and beyond
04:53so
04:54We still are you and I had a conversation before the election and I said that at that time
05:00It was Trump beat Trump and Harris be Harris
05:04Well right now it's Trump beat Trump still and the Democrats be the Democrats
05:09I think something really telling that you just said is it's Trump V Trump and Democrats V Democrats
05:16Because Trump is the standard-bearer of the GOP
05:19Democrats they don't have one. Is there any indication of who that name is that will eventually emerge?
05:27There's no indication yet who that is
05:31voters are clearly saying
05:33Overall of close to seven and ten are saying that they want to see a new Democratic figure emerge
05:39so if it is it'll probably be a governor or
05:44someone from the
05:46middle to higher ranks that is not a household name and
05:51That is likely to reinvigorate
05:53the Democratic Party
05:56as long as that person really
05:58approaches it
05:59the current issues of the day with bipartisanship the common sense in a constructive footing not by stalling and
06:07You know, it makes sense, right? Most of the leadership of the Democratic Party
06:13Is very old right now, right with very few exceptions
06:16Or the young leaders that exist have to be very far to the left, right like AOC and so
06:25voters are not
06:26They're they're they're not in favor of either of those extremes. Let's put it that way
